TODAY! Honors College Winter Wellness Series: A Warm Welcome Back!
Winter in Oregon can be tough, with the colder, darker, and rainier days making it harder to feel good. The Honors College wants to support you not just in your academic success, but in your wellness, too. This term, the HC will be hosting a variety of events that encourage students to encourage students to seek out many opportunities to care for themselves. The first event in this series will be in week 2!
Week 1 event: A Warm Welcome Back!
To kick off the term, Honors College students are invited to come grab a hot beverage from the hot chocolate and coffee bar in the SLUG! This is a casual, grab-and-go activity to give the HC students a warm welcome back from winter break, and will take place on Thursday, January 8th from 1-3pm. Questions can be directed to Taylor Maki (makit@oregonstate.edu). We look forward to connecting with you and bringing a little warmth to the start of winter term!
NEW! Alternative Spring Break
Students can now apply for the 2026 OSU Alternative Spring Break trips happening this March. Alt. Break is open to ALL OSU students: undergrad & grad students in Corvallis, Ecampus, and Cascades. Application & details are on the Alt. Break webpage. Priority application deadline: Friday, January 23rd (applications accepted on a rolling basis after until March 6th).
NEW! Honors College Faculty Research Showcases
Mark your calendars for the Honors College Faculty Research Showcases this winter!
The first showcase, featuring the College of Health, College of Pharmacy, College of Science and College of Veterinary Sciences, will take place on Thursday, Jan. 15 from 4-5:30 p.m. PT in LInC 100 and over. Corvallis students are expected to attend in person.
The second showcase, featuring the College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences and College of Forestry, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 4-5:30 p.m. PT in LInC 100 and over Zoom. Corvallis students are expected to attend in person.
HC Faculty Research Showcases are opportunities to learn more about research, scholarship and creative work at Oregon State. Students can connect with faculty members and discover ways to get involved in projects that may lead to an honors thesis. Showcases are open to all honors students, including those who aren’t ready to begin a thesis. These events help students explore possibilities and build valuable academic networks. RSVP today. NEW! Volunteer for OSU’s largest and longest-running day of service, honoring Dr. King’s legacy by fostering peace and community through service
The HC has reserved spots to volunteer at Stone Soup Corvallis, which provides free, hot meals year-round. Volunteers will help prepare, serve and clean up meals on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 9–11:30 a.m., with check-in at 8:20 a.m. in the MU Horizon Room. To kick off the term, Honors College students are invited to come grab a succulent, paint their own plant pot, and meet new HC students! NEW! Dean & Friends conversation: Careers in Manufacturing and Working Internationally
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation with Paris Hirschberg, ’07, on Tuesday, January 20 from noon-12:50 p.m. PT in LInC 345 and over Zoom. Dean and Friends events are unique to the Honors College and are opportunities for current honors students to connect with alumni and other external supporters about different career paths and professional topics. For this Dean and Friends event, Paris will lead a discussion on the theme, “Careers in Manufacturing and Working Internationally.” For those attending this event in person, lunch will be provided, and space is limited. Thesis Navigator Drop-In hours in the SLUG and on Zoom:
HC Thesis Resource Navigators will be hosting drop-in hours in the SLUG and on Zoom for any questions you might have regarding your thesis. If you’re unsure where to begin, having trouble identifying mentors to connect with, or not sure how to write your Thesis Proposal (among other things), our navigators are here to guide you in the right direction. If you are unable to make it to any of their drop-in sessions, feel free to reach out to them directly by completing the Request a Navigator webform. If you have questions around Stage 4, please reach out to your advisor or to Dewi Roberts, Advising Coordinator and Thesis Support Coordinator for the HC: dewi.roberts@oregonstate.edu

Honors College Academic Advising Canvas Page
All HC students have access to the Honors College Academic Advising Canvas Page. This is a great resource where you can discover anything from instructions on finding honors courses to navigating the thesis process after you’ve completed the HC 408 Stage 1 thesis class. For students ready for the next steps with their thesis, this page can help with finding a thesis mentor, registering for your thesis credits, submitting your proposal and so much more.
Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU App
Anytime Anywhere: MySSP @ OSU is an app that gives all OSU students, including Ecampus students, 24/7 access by text or phone with a licensed mental health counselor (MySSP stands for “My Student Support Program”). The app makes it easy to schedule short-term counseling appointments with the same ongoing counselor and provides educational materials covering mental health topics. Students can communicate with a counselor in five different languages (Mandarin, Cantonese, French, Spanish or English); additional language options are available upon request. Study Abroad
NEW! Faculty-led Program in London
Join OSU’s faculty-led program, Live, Learn, Work, and Play: The Social Determinants of Health in London from June 28-July 13, 2026. Students will learn about health equity from community leaders, health care providers, educators, advocates, and engineers who work to create London’s social, economic, and built environments. Earn 6 credits (H 399/H 599) and experiential learning or Honors College Foundations credit. Open to undergraduates (any major/college) and MPH students. Applications are due February 1, 2026. Visit France with the HC
Based in Lyon, France, this 17-day program is led by OSU faculty and runs from June 16 to July 2, 2026. Aruba Spring Break 2026 Study Abroad Program – Sustainability in Action: Small Island State Ecological Systems, Culture and Society
Spend Spring Break 2026 in Aruba earning 4 credits while exploring island ecosystems, culture, and renewable energy. The program runs March 21–29 in Aruba, with follow-up Zoom sessions in April. Zoom info sessions are coming up on Dec. 3 and Jan. 3. The priority deadline to apply is Dec. 19 and the final deadline is Jan. 19. NEW! 2026 Oregon Governor’s Conference on Tourism – Scholarship Opportunity
Scholarship applications are now open for the 2026 Oregon Governor’s Conference on Tourism, taking place March 9–11 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. This conference is an excellent entry point for students and emerging professionals to learn about and connect with Oregon’s tourism industry.
Scholarship recipients receive:
- Complimentary conference registration
- Lodging for March 9–10
Eligibility: Students enrolled in hospitality, tourism, recreation, economic development or related academic areas. Students are also given preference in the review process.

Honors College Emergency Grant
The Honors College Emergency Grant supports students facing unexpected expenses related to housing and/or meals, course materials or equipment for a class, healthcare and/or mental healthcare costs, vehicle repairs necessary for travel to class, and/or travel home for family emergencies. Grants are for up to $500, with a limit of two grants during your time in the HC. Only expenses related to the above list are eligible for emergency grant support, per university policy. Tuition or other general costs of enrollment are not eligible for funding.
HC Experiential Learning Scholarship
The Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship supports student engagement in the honors thesis (thesis proposal required), attendance at professional or academic conferences, payment of non-tuition fees associated with honors courses, or participation in an honors study abroad program. Applications are reviewed based on need, and the maximum award is $750. See here for additional information. Applications can be submitted through ScholarDollars and evaluated on a rolling basis.

NEW! Designing and Characterizing Acoustic Metamaterials – Student Research Opportunity
Dr. Shuai Wu (College of Engineering) is seeking students interested in hands-on research designing and testing active metamaterials that control acoustic waves. Students will help build an acoustic measurement setup, conduct characterization experiments, and verify results through finite element simulations. NEW! Phytochemical Research in Pasture‑Based Dairy Systems
Dr. Serkan Ates (Animal & Rangeland Sciences) is seeking up to two students to join a research project exploring how phytochemicals in pasture forbs can improve sustainability, animal health, and methane reduction in dairy systems. Students will gain hands-on experience identifying key plant species, conducting chemical analyses of bioactive compounds, and measuring methane emissions using both laboratory and field methods. This interdisciplinary work offers valuable training in agronomy, animal science, and environmental sustainability. The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more.
