HC Announcements & Events

TODAY! Fall Undergraduate Research Showcases
Curious about what Honors College students are researching? Join us for the HC Undergraduate Research Showcases — dynamic online events where students present their thesis research in short, lightning-style talks. These showcases offer a glimpse into the wide range of topics our students explore and are a great way to get inspired, learn about research opportunities and connect with fellow students and faculty. After the presentations, stick around for breakout rooms with Q&A and conversation. All students, faculty, families and friends are welcome! The fall showcases will be held Monday, Nov. 17 at 5:00 p.m. PT via ZoomRSVP: beav.es/xu9

NEW THIS WEEK! Civil Discourse Discussion: “When is Political Violence Justified?”
All Honors College students are invited to join the Honors College and the College of Business for a Civil Discourse Discussion on the subject “When is Political Violence Justified?” on Thursday, November 20 from 5–7 p.m. in Austin Hall, Room 222. This event provides a chance to share perspectives, listen thoughtfully and explore different viewpoints in a welcoming space. Guided by moderators, students will practice the principles of civil discourse and connect ideas from this year’s Honors College summer read, I Never Thought of It That Way, by Mónica Guzmán. No debate experience? No problem! All students are welcome — just bring an open mind and a willingness to listen and share. Questions about the program, or requests for accommodations, can be sent to Taylor Maki, Student Engagement and Recruitment Coordinator for the Honors College, at taylor.maki@oregonstate.edu.

Participation includes a time commitment of 6-10 hours spread over a 2-week period during Fall term, and a compensation of $20 per hour of participation (up to $200 total). To be eligible, you must be 18 years or older, fluent in English, and a junior- or senior-level undergraduate engineering student. Murder, Mayhem, and Makeup: Lady Detectives on Page and Screen (HC 407)
From Agatha Christie”s Miss Marple to Kristen Bell”s Veronica Mars, women have solved some of the dastardliest crimes of the detective genre both on the page and on the screen. We will look at a variety of texts and films featuring lady detectives (some very ladylike indeed, some decidedly not) to examine the cross-sections between gender and genre. How do these detectives use their performance of gender to solve mysteries? How do these stories challenge, reinforce, and/or complicate traditional notions of gender and crime? Register with CRN 19411: beav.es/xMU

HC Academic Advising

Hello HC Beavs!

Welcome to Registration Week! Here are some friendly reminders to help you navigate registering for Winter courses:

  1. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you don’t have an Advising Registration Hold still on your account. If you do, schedule an appointment with your major college advisor to get that lifted. The HC Advisors cannot lift this hold. If you already met with your major college advisor, but still see the Advising Registration Hold, kindly reach out to them via email to request the hold be lifted.
  2. If you are a first-year student and have not yet taken the HC 408 Stage 1 Thesis Class, try to register for it Winter term. Make sure when registering that you take Stage 1 and not one of our other stage courses.
  3. For quick reminders on how to find honors versions of classes, check out our HC Canvas page How to Find HC Courses.
  4. If you are planning to take more than one HC 407 seminar class in a term, note that you will originally receive an error code stating that you cannot register for more than one class with the same name. The registrar’s office has created an automatic override to be placed on HC student accounts to fix this error code. Wait a few moments, and try to register again.
    1. To view HC 407 seminar course descriptions, check out our HC Courses Tool and hover over the class with your cursor: https://honors.oregonstate.edu/hc-courses
  5. If you are graduating this year but have not yet checked in with your HC advisor, set up an appointment or email us so can make sure you’re on track!

We hope you have a great week and don’t hesitate to reach out directly to your HC Advisor or to hcadvisor@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.
