Starting this Monday come meet other students, volunteer, practice leadership, plan events or get involved with the Honors College this fall! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 368. We’re looking for new students to join the leadership team and have specific positions open for first-year students! Come learn more about HCSA! All HC students are welcome to join.

TODAY! HCSA Ice Cream Social
On Monday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., get ready for an ice cream social after the HCSA general meeting! This will be taking place outside LInC 368. Enjoy some ice cream and learn about leadership opportunities, event planning, volunteering, networking opportunities and more within HCSA and the wider HC community. All are welcome to join HCSA!

NEW! Honors Section of DSI 415: Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact
Earn upper-division honors credit and work on a potential thesis project in DSI 415H this fall! This course, part of the new Design for Social Impact (DSI) Certificate, offers hands-on experience with external clients to solve real-world challenges through multidisciplinary teamwork. No prerequisites are required this year, and it’s a great fit if you’re interested in sustainability, business, social justice, or innovation. Email Julie.Tucker@oregonstate.edu with questions.

UPCOMING! HC Fall Festivity
You won’t want to miss this event! Join us on Friday, October 18 from 5-7 p.m. in the LInC quad for food, drinks, games, music, drawings, prizes and more. This annual tradition is a chance for the entire Honors College community to celebrate the start of the academic year. Meet new friends, challenge HC faculty to a basketball match, or paint a pumpkin to put in your room! There will be carnival-styled food with lots of activities.Register for this event on the Honors College Community Connector App.

UPCOMING! Campus Visit: Javier Zamora
This year’s Honors College Summer Read is Solito, by Javier Zamora. On October 16, the author will be on campus for an evening event at PRAx, OSU’s new Center for the Creative Arts. “A Conversation with Javier Zamora” (with Professor Joel Zapata) will be open to the entire OSU and Corvallis community. It’s free, but you need to get a ticket. HC students are also invited to a Q&A with the author at 4:00 p.m. on October 16, in LINC 128, moderated by Professor Ana Ribero. If you’re interested in reading the book, there are copies at Course Reserves in Valley Library through fall term—three copies in English and one copy in Spanish. Just go to the Reserves desk and ask for the Honors College summer read.

Join HC staff, faculty and students for Honors College Community Coffee (HC3) for casual conversation and community connections on Thursday, October 17 from 2-3:30 pm in the SLUG. Enjoy some snacks and coffee. 

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

NEW! Oregon Consular Corps (OCC) Scholarship Fund application currently available on ScholarDollars
The Oregon Consular Corps (OCC) Scholarship Fund provides two $3,000 scholarships for OSU undergraduate students who have an international focus. Any 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student who can articulate the international dimensions of their major and/or their international career goals after graduation can apply. The scholarship application is currently open in ScholarDollars and closes on November 1st, 2024. Students must be 3rd or 4th year class standing (90+ quarter credit hours), studying full time in 2024-25, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant & Experiential Learning Scholarship applications now available on ScholarDollars
All current Honors College students can apply for the Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship to support travel to professional conferences, thesis research, costs associated with enrollment in Honors College courses and participation in HC international opportunities. Applications are available through ScholarDollars. Students with financial hardships can also apply for the one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $520, with eligibility for two grants during their time in the HC. HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

NEW! SCARC Oral History Program Assistant Job Opportunity
The Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC) is seeking applicants for a student assistant position to provide support for the SCARC Oral History Program. A primary focus for this fully remote position will be reviewing and editing oral history interview transcripts created by professional transcriptionists as well as the Whisper AI speech recognition tool. No specialized experience is required; all training will be provided upon hire. Applicants with strong writing and editing skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work independently should send a copy of their resume as well as a writing sample (on any topic – pick something that you’re proud to have written) to Chris Petersen, Archivist for Oral History and Digital Projects, at chris.petersen@oregonstate.edu

Research Opportunity with the GEMM Lab
Interested in marine biology? The GEMM Lab is seeking a motivated student to join their research on gray whales off the Oregon coast! You’ll analyze photographs to assess whale injuries from entanglements, vessel strikes, or orca attacks, as well as study a growing skin disease. This work will help improve understanding of human impacts on gray whales. The position offers experience in data management, photo-identification, and statistical analysis. University Legislative Scholars Applications Open
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) program offers a year-long opportunity to engage with public policy at the state and federal levels. Students can join tuition-free or for two credits per term. Participants meet with legislators, learn about government careers, visit the State Capitol, and build connections with peers. Join us on Tuesday, October 8 from 4 to 5 p.m. for an inspiring session with Dr. Tessa Hill, oceanographer and co-author of the recently published At Every Depth: Our Growing Knowledge of the Changing Oceans. Dr. Hill will discuss her journey as both a scientist and a writer, sharing her experiences while writing the book, which chronicles key oceanic discoveries and challenges. There will be ample time for discussion and Q&A! The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. HC Resources

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. Honors College student learning space
The Honors College student learning space, the SLUG, opens Tuesday, September 24th. Located in Learning Innovation Center 340, the SLUG offers students study spaces, snacks and free printing. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Friday, noon-6:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Sunday. For the first weeks, there will be minor renovations in the SLUG.

Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. “Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

Campus opportunity: 
Finishing up your research/ thesis but don’t know how to talk about it. College of AgSci is hosting a workshop about how to create a poster and give an elevator pitch. This can be helpful for the HC thesis external communication requirement.
