Sep 29 (Fri). Course Introduction: logistics, schedule, expectations, PW fire history, burn objectives, burn plans and burn organization. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Oct 6 (Fri). Rx Planning Foundation: fire effects, weather, fuel and moisture characteristics, the fire effects monitor function. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Oct 13 (Fri). Holding and Firing: Rx fire containment principles and practices, ignition options and procedures. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Oct 15 (Sun). Possible RX Burn Day – hold this on your calendar. 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Oct 20 (Fri). Fuel Loading and Monitoring: techniques for estimating fuel loads, monitoring considerations and practices. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Oct 22 (Sun). Possible RX Burn Day – hold this on your calendar. 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Oct 27 (Fri). Identifying Objectives and Developing Prescriptions: fuel models, introduction to fire behavior modeling. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.

Nov 3 (Fri). Fire Behavior Modeling: modeling for holding and contingency, spatial modeling. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Nov 10 (Fri). No class – Veteran’s Day holiday, observed.
Nov 17 (Fri). Smoke and Permits: smoke rules and regulations, smoke mitigation practices, permits for Rx burning. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Nov 24 (Fri). No class – Thanksgiving holiday.
Dec 1 (Fri). Burn Plan Finale: mapping for effective burn management, developing the burn briefing, understanding complexity and risk, limiting liability. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Dec 8 (Fri). Burn Plan Presentations: students present custom burn plans. Classroom: 10:00 – 10:50. Lab/field: 1:00 – 4:50 p.m.
Dec 11-15. Finals week. Final due Friday – open all week. Graduate student paper due Tuesday – early submission allowed.
