A Gourdgeous End to October

BOO-tiful Boograms made and ready to be picked up or bought to send a kind reminder to those in a frightful time of exam season!

A fab-BOO-lous time to give back.

October was a treat for Beta Iota Brothers as they made many fun memories through the different seasonal events that were planned out by our committees–such as recruitment earlier in the month and finishing it off with spooky themed fundraising and service events. As much as our Chapter likes to have fun with our Brothers, we also enjoy giving back and serving to our community to provide aid to those in need.

Beta Iota continued its tradition with our annual Trick-or-Treat for Canned Goods to collect canned goods to donate to OSU’s Human Services Resource Center (HSRC) in support of those who are facing food insecurity. The event ran throughout mid-October to the end of the month and was coordinated by our Service Committee Head, Jacqueline Boechler. By the end of the event, Beta Iota was able to donate boxes full of canned goods and non-perishable food items to donate to the HSRC with the help of generous donors from local Corvallis neighborhoods as well as pharmacy students within the OSU College of Pharmacy. We are grateful for all the support throughout the event to help us support our cause!

The frightful weeks of exams were also lurking amongst the month of October. With many pharmacy students facing multiple exams, projects, and assignments each week, it’s easy to get spooked into being stressed with the workload that the first term of the school year brought. Thanks to the efforts and collaboration between our Fundraising Committee Head, Suzie Cha, and Scholarship Committee Head, Makenna Wong, Boograms were a special treat to trick our brains into focusing back on ourselves and our mental health in these stressful times. Students and faculty had the opportunity to send out Rx themed spooky goodie bags that included personalized messages, study tips, candy-filled prescription drug bottles and squishies that helped as a friendly reminder and gift to brighten up anyone’s day on a busy month like October. Boograms were a popular favorite to many pharmacy students at both the OSU and OHSU campuses. The event was a success and ended with all orders and same-day sales being completely sold out!

Looking ahead now that we’ve approached the month of November, it comes as the month of giving thanks to the things in life we are grateful for. For PDC, November 2nd marks as an important date for the Fraternity known as Founder’s Day. This is the day that 11 men from the University of Michigan formed the first professional pharmacy fraternity of pharmacy founded by pharmacy students. More information on the History of PDC can be founded on the Phi Delta Chi official website.

To celebrate the legacy of our founders, Beta Iota has planned to continue our annual Founder’s Day celebration with our neighboring chapter, Gamma Beta, with brunch at McMenamins Wilsonville Old Church & Pub on Sunday, November 20th. Coordinated by our WAL, Johnny Chen, we’re excited to be reuniting with our neighboring chapter to celebrate a special day to promote the sense of Brotherhood–which is one of the aspects that the Fraternity was founded for.

In the spirit of Brotherhood, our Brotherhood Committee Head, Karen Zhang, has been proactive in keeping Brothers engaged with each other to promote the meaning behind “Brothers for Life.” Just recently Beta Iota held a FroYo Social at Corvallis’ Yogurt Extreme on Monroe Ave on November 9th to chill with fellow Brothers as well as grab a sweet treat in between busy schedules and tough study sessions. Additionally, Beta Iota is also anticipating a special Brothersgiving Dinner hosted by one of our wonderful co-advisors, Dr. Susan Morley, on Tuesday, November 22nd. We are excited and can’t wait for this upcoming Brotherhood bonding time as well as other future events to come for the rest of November!
