Supporting student wellbeing in the classroom: Call for participation

the best practices for reducing unnecessary stress and discouragement are usually the best practices for increasing learning. ~ Robert Eaton, Steven V. Hunsaker, and Bonnie Moon, Improving Learning and Mental Health in the College Classroom

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) along with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), as part of Health Promoting University (HPU@OSU), welcomes applications for a yearlong faculty learning community: Supporting Student Wellbeing in the Classroom.

This learning community will provide a collaborative space to learn alongside pedagogical specialists, mental health experts, and teaching colleagues from across the university. Participants will read and discuss scholarship on enhancing student wellbeing in the college classroom (Fall term), choose a strategy to pilot and get feedback on in class (Winter), and showcase a teaching artifact or experience with the broader OSU teaching community (Spring). Participants will receive a copy of the book Improving Learning and Mental Health in the College Classroom

Together, we will work through the challenges of how best to support student wellbeing in the college classroom while also managing our own wellbeing and workload.

Structure

The Supporting Student Wellbeing in the Classroom learning community is a professional development program that provides $1000 in OPE funds to instructors who:

  • Fully participate in all synchronous learning community meetings and asynchronous Canvas learning activities.
  • Implement strategies in an on-campus (Corvallis, Cascades, Hatfield, La Grande) or online (Ecampus) course that is being offered this year, preferably Winter term.
  • Utilize assessment tools developed by the FLC to get student feedback on the effectiveness of wellbeing support in the classroom
  • Present their ideas, projects, or experiences about supporting student wellbeing in the classroom at the final learning community meeting (showcase).

The learning community will blend required monthly Zoom meetings with online learning activities in Canvas throughout the term starting on Friday, October 9. The time commitment will average approximately 3-4 hours per month. The learning community will meet on Fridays, 11-12:30, on the following dates:

  • Fall: October 9, November 13, December 11
