All of us here in the Honors College are excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to support you in making the most of your time at Oregon State University and in the HC. This year is particularly special as it marks the 30th anniversary of the Honors College, building on a longer history of honors programming at OSU. Whether you are new to the honors community or returning, Honors College advisors and staff members are here to help you connect with everything OSU has to offer.
This weekly Monday Message email will keep you informed about upcoming activities and opportunities, and I encourage you to engage in and explore whatever is of interest to you – everyone in the honors community is welcome!
If you haven’t already done so, please also sign up for the Honors College Community Connector app. If you have any questions or face any challenges, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the Honors College staff or faculty members. HCSA Events
NEW & WEEKLY! Honors College Student Association (HCSA) Club Meetings
Starting next Monday come meet other students, volunteer, practice leadership, plan events or get involved with the Honors College this fall! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 368. We’re looking for new students to join the leadership team and have specific positions open for first-year students! Come learn more about HCSA! All HC students are welcome to join.
NEW! HCSA Ice Cream Social
On Monday, Sept. 30 at 5 p.m., get ready for an ice cream social after the HCSA general meeting! This will be taking place outside LInC 368. Enjoy some ice cream and learn about leadership opportunities, event planning, volunteering, networking opportunities and more within HCSA and the wider HC community. All are welcome to join HCSA!

NEW & TODAY! FORTE: Academic Onboarding
All incoming first-year and transfer students will attend FORTE, a 3-hour academic experience designed to support your transition to OSU’s learning environment. Each block includes an 80-minute keynote session, followed by two 40-minute breakouts. These sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at various locations.
TODAY! HC Summer Read
Today, Monday, September 23, and Tuesday, September 24, the Honors College is discussing Solito: A Memoir by Javier Zamora. Summer read discussion groups are one-hour conversations with peers and a staff facilitator. If you have any questions or need help finding your conformation email, please email taylor.maki@oregonstate.edu. All discussions will be taking place in LInC on the 3rd floor.
NEW & TOMORROW! New Student Convocation and Orange & Black Rally
Convocation is one of two seminal ceremonies that bookend the academic year. Whereas Commencement celebrates the graduating class, Convocation celebrates the incoming class. Each fall, Oregon State University welcomes the incoming class of students at the New Student Convocation ceremony. Convocation, which literally translates to “come together,” is a ceremony in which we welcome OSU’s new students to campus. Please plan to meet in either Sackett Hall F & G lounge, West Hall main lounge, or on the LInC lawn at 2:15 p.m. to walk to the New Student Walk and Convocation beginning in the MU Quad. Dean Doolen will be escorting all incoming Honors College students on the largest tradition of OSUWelcome, your official academic welcome to Oregon State, from 3:00-4:30 p.m.
NEW! Honors Section of DSI 415: Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact
Earn upper-division honors credit and work on a potential thesis project in DSI 415H this fall! This course, part of the new Design for Social Impact (DSI) Certificate, offers hands-on experience with external clients to solve real-world challenges through multidisciplinary teamwork. No prerequisites are required this year, and it’s a great fit if you’re interested in sustainability, business, social justice, or innovation. Email Julie.Tucker@oregonstate.edu with questions.
NEW! HC Fall Festivity
You won’t want to miss this event! Join us on Friday, October 18 from 5-7 p.m. in the LInC quad for food, drinks, games, music, drawings, prizes and more. This annual tradition is a chance for the entire Honors College community to celebrate the start of the academic year. Meet new friends, challenge HC faculty to a basketball match, or paint a pumpkin to put in your room! NEW! Campus Visit: Javier Zamora
This year’s Honors College Summer Read is Solito, by Javier Zamora. On October 16, the author will be on campus for an evening event at PRAx, OSU’s new Center for the Creative Arts. “A Conversation with Javier Zamora” (with Professor Joel Zapata) will be open to the entire OSU and Corvallis community. It’s free, but you need to get a ticket: beav.es/pM6 HC students are also invited to a Q&A with the author at 4:00 p.m. on October 16, in LINC 128, moderated by Professor Ana Ribero. If you’re interested in reading the book, there are copies at Course Reserves in Valley Library through fall term—three copies in English and one copy in Spanish. Just go to the Reserves desk and ask for the Honors College summer read.
Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities
Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant & Experiential Learning Scholarship applications now available on ScholarDollars
All current Honors College students can apply for the Honors College Experiential Learning Scholarship to support travel to professional conferences, thesis research, costs associated with enrollment in Honors College courses and participation in HC international opportunities. Applications are available through ScholarDollars. Students with financial hardships can also apply for the one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $520, with eligibility for two grants during their time in the HC. HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

The Brooke Owens Fellowship is accepting applications for the class of 2025! This program offers paid internships in aerospace for undergraduate women and gender minorities, plus mentorship from top industry leaders. Fellows intern at companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin and attend a 3-day summit in D.C. The deadline to apply is October 7th.
NEW! Research Opportunity with the GEMM Lab
Interested in marine biology? The GEMM Lab is seeking a motivated student to join their research on gray whales off the Oregon coast! You’ll analyze photographs to assess whale injuries from entanglements, vessel strikes, or orca attacks, as well as study a growing skin disease. This work will help improve understanding of human impacts on gray whales. The position offers experience in data management, photo-identification, and statistical analysis. NEW! University Legislative Scholars Applications Open
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) program offers a year-long opportunity to engage with public policy at the state and federal levels. Students can join tuition-free or for two credits per term. Participants meet with legislators, learn about government careers, visit the State Capitol, and build connections with peers. Scholarships are available. All majors are encouraged to apply, with a focus on underrepresented and STEM students. Apply here. Visit the exhibition How to Carry Water at PRAx today through Sunday, September 29. It brings together contemporary visual artists and humanities scholars in shared observations and questions about watersheds. The exhibition considers how the lenses of history, philosophy and creative practice allow for alternative methods of witnessing the human relationship to water.

NEW! Fall Bike Sale
The goal of the Fall Bike Sale at the Beaver Community Fair in the MU Quad on Friday, September 27 from noon-1 p.m. is to offer affordable, ready-to-ride bicycles to students. Transportation Services has teamed up with the ALI Bike Shop, OSU Surplus and OSU Public Safety to refurbish abandoned or dropped-off bikes and put them back into use on campus. Bikes sell out fast so arrive early for best selection.
NEW! Beaver Community Fair
Each year the Beaver Community Fair draws together the OSU and greater Corvallis communities to celebrate the start of the academic year. Explore over 200 booths featuring OSU departments, student organizations, local businesses, and non-profits in the MU Quad from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, September 27.

The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. NEW! Beaver Community Fair
Connect with the Beaver Community on Friday, October 6 from 12-4 p.m. in the MU Quad and Sec Plaza! Annually the Beaver Community Fair draws together the OSU and greater Corvallis communities to celebrate the start of the academic year. Over two hundred different booths representing OSU departments & student organizations, Corvallis community agencies & businesses and local non-profit organizations are coming together to make visible the opportunity to connect with services, products, and involvement opportunities on campus and around the area.
HC Resources
The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. Honors College student learning space
The Honors College student learning space, the SLUG, opens Tuesday, September 24th. Located in Learning Innovation Center 340, the SLUG offers students study spaces, snacks and free printing. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursdays, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Friday, noon-6:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Sunday. For the first weeks, there will be minor renovations in the SLUG.

Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. “Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.
Campus opportunity:
Finishing up your research/ thesis but don’t know how to talk about it. College of AgSci is hosting a workshop about how to create a poster and give an elevator pitch. This can be helpful for the HC thesis external communication requirement. All students are welcome regardless of major. Thursday, October 12 from 6-7:30pm in LINC 303.
