The University of Nevada-Las Vegas Honors College literary magazine, From the Brush, is accepting submissions (short fiction, creative non-fiction, scholarship, 2D & 3D art, and multimedia) until Wednesday, Feb. 28th. HC Romania Service Trip Overview

HCSA Food Drive
HCSA is collecting donations for Linn Benton Food Share for the whole month of February. This non-profit organization works to provide supplemental food boxes, serve emergency meals, stock food pantries, and support individuals facing food insecurity in Linn and Benton County. There will be donation boxes near the front desks of Sackett and West Halls. If you’re interested in donating another way (cash, check, donation pickup, etc.) please contact Payton Sprando at sprandop@oregonstate.edu to organize this. We would appreciate all of you participating in the food drive!

NEW! Student Position Opening – Undergraduate Media Assistant: Instagram and Tiktok Editor
The Honors College is looking for a dynamic and creative individual to join our team as a Student Media Assistant to manage the HC Instagram and TikTok account. This is a part-time position with approximately 10 hours per week. Work hours can be flexible to accommodate a student schedule.

NEW! Cinematic Voices: “Zora Neale Hurston – Claiming a Space,” a Film Screening and Conversation with Dr. Irma McClaurin
All Honors College students are invited to a film screening of PBS American Experience “Zora Neale Hurston: Claiming a Space” and conversation with Dr. Irma McClaurin on Thursday, Feb. 29 from 5-7:30 p.m. at Lonnie B. NEW! HC 407 – Sleepless in Slumberland: Psychology of Insomnia
1 credit Jessee Dietch
Thursdays, 4-4:50 p.m.
Requires attendance to Slumberland VR Theatre event – Thursday April 25, 8:00-9:00 p.m.
Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder. It can have a significant negative impact on physical and mental health, as well as on quality of life. This immersive course features a Virtual Reality event (Slumberland) at the new Patricia Valian Reser Center for the Creative Arts (PRAx). We will cover the basics of sleep and circadian rhythms, and explore the psychology of insomnia including causes, symptoms, consequences, and psychological treatment options. Assignments will include readings of scientific articles and other materials and a self-guided sleep improvement project. In- class time will include brief lecture, discussion, and hands-on activities.
NEW! HC 407 – Fish, Indigenous People, and the Planet

Requires attendance to music performance at PRAx – Saturday May 4th, 7:00 p.m.
This class will examine how food, history, society, and culture are intertwined. For many, seafood provides calories and nutrients, with seafood comprising 17% of the world’s protein intake. More importantly, though, for many peoples around the world, fish and the act of fishing go well beyond mere sustenance, providing connections to the natural world, a sense of place and community, and an identity. Through multiple experiences, group conversation, and individual discovery we will learn about Indigenous peoples’ identity and attachment to water and fish through an exploration of culture, music, and history, and discuss how history, culture, and identity are altered in the face of modern problems. This class will center both on Pacific Northwest Indigenous peoples and the music of Okaijda Afroso, a Ghanaian musician whose Jaku Mumor focuses on the Go-Dangme fishermen of Ghana. Class includes a live performance by Okaijda Afroso at PRAx on Saturday, May 4, 2024 and a class visit by the guest artist.
Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities
NEW! HC International Program Scholarship
Honors College students with financial need can apply for a scholarship of up to $1,000 in support of participation in HC sponsored and planned international opportunities (France, Nepal, Romania and London in 2024). Funds are limited, and awards will be made based on financial need and availability of funds. Incoming first year students are eligible to apply for this scholarship as well. Apply here by March 29.
HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.
HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

NEW! FBI Honors Intern Program
Applications are open for the FBI Honors Internship Program (HIP) for June to August 2025. From their website, “HIP is ideal for undergraduate students between their junior and senior years, as well as graduate students pursuing a master’s degree, JD, or PhD, this paid internship can be a direct pipeline to full-time employment after college. Come network, learn, and explore possibilities for your future at one of the Career Development Center’s Winter 2024 Career Fairs! Professionals, employers, and grad schools will be seeking out students and recent grads at the following fairs: Wednesday, Feb. 28 – Law and Justice. 2024-2025 PRAx Student Fellowships
This one-year fellowship offers Oregon State graduate and advanced undergraduate students the opportunity to develop an interdisciplinary creative or journalistic project connected with OSU research. Fellows will be awarded $1,000, engage in ongoing networking and professional development with mentors and present their projects in a public exhibition. Oregon Wine Research Institute Undergraduate Scholars Program
Interested in funded research opportunities with the Oregon Wine Research Institute? They are looking for students in majors related to enology, viticulture, food science, horticulture, plant science, biochemistry, engineering, economics, environmental science, or an agricultural/environmental field of study. College of Agricultural Science Undergraduate Research
The College of Ag is currently accepting applications for the Continuing Researcher Support Program. This program provides up to $1700 to undergraduate students with prior research experience who are seeking support to conduct a semi-independent research project with a College of AgSci faculty member. Projects can be conducted in summer term ($700 award), academic year (fall, winter, spring – $1000 award), or full year ($1700 award). The deadline to apply is April 12. Questions? Summer Internship – Construction Management
Chevron has an opening for a summer Facilities Engineering Construction Management Intern. This position is available to students pursuing a Bachelors or Masters degree in Construction Management. Climate Change Anxiety Survey
Feelings of distress because of climate change have become a growing concern, especially among younger generations. Sabine Huemer, professor of practice at the School of Psychological Science at OSU, is examining climate change anxiety among OSU students to help tailor intervention programs. OSU students 18+ are encouraged to participate in this anonymous survey.
Dam Proud Day T-shirt Contest
Looking for a way to flex your creative muscles and give back to the Beaver Community? Submit a design that responds to this creative prompt: What comes to mind when you think of being Dam Proud of Oregon State? Apply for the Alternative Spring Break Program
Alternative Break offers week-long service & leadership programs traveling to several locations on the west coast during OSU’s spring break (March 23rd-29th, 2024). Join groups of 10-12 students in multi-day, overnight programs in one of three PNW communities to learn its historical, cultural, and political background. Engage in a variety of direct service projects, educational sessions, and reflective dialogue with leaders in their respective communities. This program is an opportunity to explore the complexity of social issues, reflect on ones own assumptions, and develop the ability to lead for social change, all while connecting with fellow OSU students! Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.
HC Resources
The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow Beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. “Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area. The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
- Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
- Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
- Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
- Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
These resources are available throughout the term.
