TODAY & WEEKLY! Honors College Student Association (HCSA) Club Meetings
Starting Today come meet other students, volunteer, practice leadership, plan events or get involved with the Honors College this fall! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. in LInC 303. We’re looking for new students to join the leadership team and have specific positions open for first-year students! Come learn more about HCSA! All HC students are welcome to join. 

HC Announcements and Events

NEW! THIS WEEK! Reception with the Honors College Board of Regents
This Friday, 10/20, the Honors College Board of Regents has its annual fall meeting. The Board of Regents is the college’s external advisory group and supports creation of new resources for Honors College students. The meeting will conclude with a reception in the SLUG at 3:00. Board members enjoy meeting with current students at these events, and if you are interested in participating or would like additional information, please email Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu or come by the SLUG between 3:00 and 4:00 (there will be food and refreshments). All honors students are welcome.

DUE THIS WEEK! Join the Honors College Student Leadership Circle
The Honors College invites participation from all honors students in the 2023-2024 HC Student Leadership Circle. The SLC advises staff and leadership on the development, implementation and assessment of initiatives, programs and opportunities. Students can find details and sign up to contribute to one or more fall term projects here. New opportunities will be posted at the beginning of winter and spring terms. Please register by Friday, October 20th. If you have any questions, contact Honors College Assistant Dean of External Relations and Student Engagement Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu.

HC Fall Festivity
You won’t want to miss this event! Join us on Tuesday, October 24 from 5-7 p.m. in the LInC quad for food, drinks, games, music, drawings, prizes and more. This annual tradition is a chance for the entire Honors College community to celebrate the start of the academic year. Meet new friends, challenge HC faculty to a basketball match, or paint a pumpkin to put in your room! There will be carnival-styled food with lots of activities.Register for this event on the Honors College Community Connector App.

SLUG Renovations
In late October the SLUG will be undergoing minor renovations. It will still be open, however, computer usage will be limited and it may be noisy. Any questions about the renovation can be emailed to Laura Blackwell at laura.blackwell@oregonstate.edu.

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

NEW! 2023-24 STARR Award Program is Now Open
Oregon NASA Space Grant offers students who are interested in space science/aerospace related careers and are attending our member community colleges and 4-year universities, an opportunity to apply for $5,000 awards that enhance and supplement their academic study in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and STEM education. Individuals from underserved and underrepresented groups in STEM fields, women, and individuals with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Go to http://spacegrant.oregonstate.edu/scholarships for more information or call 541.737.2414

HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

NEW! Getting a Dam Job: Government Recruiters Teach Govt. Applications
Interested in navigating the government application process for positions in state or federal government? It’s complicated and this session will focus on showing you how to create the best government application. The OSU Career Center will virtually host guest speakers from the federal and state government who can give you an inside look at how to get your foot in the door on Oct. 24 at noon. This will include insider tips on USAJobs, the Pathways program, applying to state Oregon jobs, and more. Bring your questions! State of the Coast is a chance to have fun and learn while listening to informative talks on current marine science and policy issues, participate in hands-on activities, and network with research, industry, and community leaders. This is Oregon’s coastal conference for everyone! Darryl Thomas will deliver the keynote address on Bridging Art and Science for Inclusive CommunicationThe State of the Coast conference is in Newport, OR on Friday and Saturday, November 3-4. Research Assistant Opportunity
Are you interested in working with young children in school settings and learning about research and education in the real world? The Kindergarten Readiness Research Program is looking for volunteer undergraduate research assistants. Join the University Legislative Scholars Program
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) is a year-long experiential learning program that enables students to engage in public policy issues at the state level while also increasing student advocacy in the Oregon legislative process. THIS WEEK! A Peace of My Mind: Exploring Belonging One Story at a Time
Join the Centro Cultural César Chávez Center for A Peace of My Mind. This is a multimedia arts project created by award-winning photographer John Noltner. The project uses portraits and personal stories to bridge divides and encourage dialogue around important social issues. This project happening from Oct 16th – Oct 20th seeks to amplify voices and stories often untold or unheard. Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Starting Monday, September 18, visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.

HC Resources

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. HC Study Groups
Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow Beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. If you would like to participate in fall term HC study groups, please email bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu.

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area. The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:

  • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
  • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
  • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
  • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

These resources are available throughout the term.
