HCSA Events This Week

NEW/THIS WEEK! Midnight Breakfast
The Honors College Student Association is hosting midnight breakfast to kick off dead week and celebrate nearing the end of the term on Friday, December 2 at 11:30 p.m. in the West and Sackett lounge. There will be free breakfast item provided (pancakes, fruits, juices, and more) at the event!. HC Study Groups
Need a little help in your classes or want to brush up on your knowledge? Join a study group! If these thimes do not work for you and you would like to participate, please contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu

 Physics study groups will be on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. in LInC 360 and Thursdays at 1 p.m. in LInC 350.

NEW! Fall Term Course Evaluations Due Soon
The end of fall term is almost here, which means it’s time to complete your Honors course evaluations! Did you love — or not love! — a particular HC course? Providing your feedback via these evaluations is a way for you to impact future offerings and have your voice be heard. It’s quick, it’s confidential and it matters! All instructors will be sent a summary of their course evaluations after final grades have been submitted. Click here to submit your evaluations before the end of finals week.

Write for Inside Scoop
Do you have any tips for younger HC students? Do you have a unique HC experience you want to share? Do you want to have a piece of your writing published on the Honors Link blog? Apply to write an article for the HC’s Inside Scoop series. These are short (500-1000) word articles that capture aspects of being an honors student. Submit an article pitch here and get the inside scoop from other students on our blog.

Open House Celebration for Fall and Winter Graduates
Are you graduating this fall or winter? Join the HC on Thursday, December 8 to celebrate the accomplishments of honors students graduating at the end of this term. There will be opportunities for photos, gifts and light refreshments. Students and families are welcome to drop in to visit with the Honors College deans and staff any time from 3-4:30 in LInC 343. Please RSVP here and fill out a short form here about your post-graduation plans!

THIS WEEK! Arts and Literary Journal: Call for submissions!
Submit your original poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and/or visual art to the UNLV Arts and Literary Journal—open to Honors College students nationwide. The deadline is Friday, December 2. (Two OSU HC students had their work published in this journal last year!) Learn more here.

TODAY! Order your HC Graduation Regalia
Are you participating in the June 2023 commencement or want HC regalia? If Yes, to ensure that you have your HC regalia for graduation please pre-order here BY Monday, November 28. There are special commencement garments that signify your achievement as an Honors College graduate. If you are participating in the June 2023 commencement and you pre-order your regalia, you will be able to pick-up and pay for your order at the OSU Graduation Fair. Please reach out to the HC at UHCAdvisor@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.

The HC is currently accepting nominations for students to feature in the Student Spotlight series. If you know of a student who you think deserves recognition submit their name and the reason for the nomination here.

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

Bring your Paying for College Questions to CAFE!
Bring your FAFSA/ORSAA or any paying for college questions to OSU’s Center for Advancing Financial Education or CAFE, drop-in hours, Tuesday from 10am-2pm in-person (currently Austin Hall room 173 – but locations may vary – check website for specific locations each week) or virtually in the Zoom room.

SNAP Outreach at the BNC
Students may be eligible for $234 a month in grocery funds! SNAP is a federal nutrition benefits program, and the Basic Needs Center Center at Oregon State assists with applications! For more information visit the SNAP link here

THIS WEEK! Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Program Innovation Lab Scholarship and Internship Fund
The Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Innovation Lab Scholarship supports Oregon State University undergraduate students in their second year or more of study who are participating in a paid internship with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Innovation Lab (iLab) in Newport, Oregon. Recipients will be students in any college at Oregon State University who are interested in developing the programs and operations of the HMSC iLab. This scholarship is for up to three awards of $18,640 each. Students must submit their application by Sunday, December 4 through OSU ScholarDollars. More information can be found here. If you have any questions, contact Cynthia Leonard at Cynthia.leonard@oregonstate.edu.

HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

The Welcome Center is currently hiring undergraduate students to be TOUR Ambassadors! Our ambassadors represent Oregon State University through a variety of prospective student recruitment events. You can find more information about the position, including the hiring timeline, on our website.

Project  & Technology Coordinator Job Opportunities
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating participant payments and communications for the Better Jobs for Young Workers (“BJYW”) Research Study, which to better understand how young adults without college degrees can improve their job quality. This position averages ten hours a week at $15/hr and has flexible scheduling. The Technology Coordinator will finalize the development of a relational database with a connector script using the Qualtrics API to receive information on a survey wave completion and then invite participants to return for the next wave at the appropriate time interval. They will also create front end integration for the relational database to facilitate lookup by the participant-facing team. This position averages ten hours a week at $15/hr and has flexible scheduling.

Be Part of a Children’s Book About Transracial Adoption!
Are you part of a transracially adopted family? Be part of an HC student’s thesis project, a children’s book on transracial adoption! The purpose of the children’s book is to help transracially adopted families navigate their unique, special and sometimes challenging experience. It will also highlight and represent the diversity of different experiences that exist within transracial adoption. As a participant in this project, you will fill out this quick Interviewee Consent Form and Pre-Interview Questionnaire –both invaluable in shaping the thesis and book– and you may be invited to participate in an optional interview (this process ends on Saturday, December 10 at 11:59 p.m.). All participants are also entered to win a $50 gift card.

The term is finishing up fast and finals are approaching. Join the Academic Success Center and your peers to talk about concentration, distraction and effective study sessions through the lens of studying for finals. We know folks are juggling a lot, and we want to offer some tools and strategies that can support your process now and that you can carry into the new year, too! It’s a great time to plan out the rest of the term and prepare for final exams. The Finals Survival Guide provides tools and tips for how to manage your time over the next few weeks, study techniques, and test-taking strategies. Stop by the Academic Success Center in Waldo 125 to pick up your copy. You can also chat with a Strategist and develop a more personalized plan.

Borrow Calculators and Tools for Academic Success from the Valley Library
Do you need a scientific, financial, or graphing calculator? The Valley Library has calculators to loan. The library also has loanable tools such as laptops, tablets, and computer accessories like chargers, headphones, flash drives, ergonomic mice, and more—for all your midterm and finals needs! Togetherall: New Mental Health Resource for OSU Students
Togetherall is a safe, online community to share anonymously and get support to improve mental health and well-being. The Togetherall community is available 24/7 and is monitored by licensed mental health practitioners. Join the community and learn more here

HC Resources

These resources are available throughout the term.

  • The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. You can also get in touch with the main office by contacting honors.college@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541.737.6400. 
  • The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
    • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
    • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

These resources are available throughout the term.

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

West & Sackett Drop-In Office Hours
Bailey Garvin and Courtney Lira, the Honors College Student Engagement Coordinators, will be hosting office hours throughout fall term. Stop by if you have any questions regarding the Honors College, HCSA, how to get involved or just need general advice and someone to talk to!
