Stage 3 Thesis Proposal Studio
Have a thesis mentor but need an extra nudge completing and submitting your thesis proposal? Befuddled by the thesis proposal, agreement, or timeline? Log into Zoom on Tuesday, November 22 from 3-3:50 p.m. to receive guidance, consult, and learn from your peers about the thesis proposal process. Bring your ideas, questions, and if available, a draft of your proposal. Find the Zoom information here.

Write for the Inside Scoop
Do you have any tips for younger HC students? Do you have a unique HC experience you want to share? Do you want to have a piece of your writing published on the Honors Link blog? Apply to write an article for the HC’s Inside Scoop series. These are short (500-1000) word articles that capture aspects of being an honors student. Submit an article pitch here and get the inside scoop from other students on our blog.

THIS WEEK! Study Abroad with the Honors College!
Are you interested in going abroad with the Honors College? Join us on Friday, November 18 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in LInC 343 for an informational session on the HC 2023 faculty-led study abroad trip to France! From exploring efforts by French leaders to confront climate change to immersing yourself in France’s history, culture and food system, hear how OSU faculty plan to transform the cities of Paris and Lyon into dynamic, interactive classrooms for 18 days. Those who are interested but unable to attend can complete this webform to receive additional information and updates about the program. If you are interested in the program or have questions, please contact the faculty co-leaders at jasterns@oregonstate.edu and bacheled@oregonstate.edu.

NEW! Open House Celebration for Fall Graduates
Are you graduating this fall? Join the HC on Thursday, Dec. 8 to celebrate the accomplishments of honors students graduating at the end of this term. There will be opportunities for photos, gifts and light refreshments. Students and families are welcome to drop in to visit with the Honors College deans and staff any time from 3-4:30 in LInC 343. NEW! Order your HC Graduation Regalia
Are you participating in the June 2023 commencement or want HC regalia? If Yes, to ensure that you have your HC regalia for graduation please pre-order here: https://honors.oregonstate.edu/webform/hc-regalia BY Monday Nov. 28. There are special commencement garments that signify your achievement as an Honors College graduate. If you are participating in the June 2023 commencement and you pre-order your regalia, you will be able to pick-up and pay for your order at the OSU Graduation Fair. Please reach out to the HC at UHCAdvisor@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.

Winter Book Clubs
An Honors College winter tradition is back! Sign-ups are now open for the HC’s Winter Break Faculty/Student Book Clubs! Each year, we invite a handful of university leaders, faculty, and friends to select a book to share with a small group of Honors College students. Group members each get a free copy of their group’s book to read over the break, and groups meet with their leader to discuss the book at the beginning of winter term over pizza. Register here by November 18! Students who sign up first will have priority in group assignments.

Need a little help in your classes or want to brush up on your knowledge? Join a study group! Keep an eye out for the writing study group hours — coming soon!

 Physics study groups will be on Wednesdays at 5pm in LInC 360 and Thursdays at 1 p.m. in LInC 350. 
– Chemistry study groups are on Mondays and Wednesdays @ 5 p.m. in Sackett office near F/G wing. 
– Biology study groups are Mondays @ 2 p.m. in LInC 437 & Thursdays @ 4 p.m. in LInC 345 (10/13 only will be LInC 437). 
 Math study groups Mondays @ 4 p.m. in LInC 360, Tuesdays @ 5 p.m. in LInC 360, Wednesdays @ 5 p.m. in LInC 360,  and Thursdays @ 4 p.m. in LInC 360

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

NEW! Bring your Paying for College Questions to CAFE!
Bring your FAFSA/ORSAA or any paying for college questions to OSU’s Center for Advancing Financial Education or CAFE, drop-in hours, Tuesday from 10am-2pm in-person (currently Austin Hall room 173 – but locations may vary – check website for specific locations each week) or virtually in the Zoom room.

SNAP Outreach at the BNC
Students may be eligible for $234 a month in grocery funds! SNAP is a federal nutrition benefits program, and the Basic Needs Center Center at Oregon State assists with applications! For more information visit the SNAP link here

Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Program Innovation Lab Scholarship and Internship Fund
The Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Innovation Lab Scholarship supports Oregon State University undergraduate students in their second year or more of study who are participating in a paid internship with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Innovation Lab (iLab) in Newport, Oregon. Recipients will be students in any college at Oregon State University who are interested in developing the programs and operations of the HMSC iLab. HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

OSU Energy Efficiency Center is Hiring
Would you be interested in a part-time, on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) has multiple positions available for Student Technical Analysts with start dates in Winter 2022. Analysts work part-time during the school year (10-15 hrs/week) and during the summer (30-40 hrs/week) conducting comprehensive assessments of small and medium-sized manufacturers and water treatment facilities across the Northwest. Visit the link here to learn more information about the OSU Energy Efficiency Center. Project  & Technology Coordinator Job Opportunities
The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating participant payments and communications for the Better Jobs for Young Workers (“BJYW”) Research Study, which to better understand how young adults without college degrees can improve their job quality. This position averages ten hours a week at $15/hr and has flexible scheduling. The Technology Coordinator will finalize the development of a relational database with a connector script using the Qualtrics API to receive information on a survey wave completion and then invite participants to return for the next wave at the appropriate time interval. They will also create front end integration for the relational database to facilitate lookup by the participant-facing team. This position averages ten hours a week at $15/hr and has flexible scheduling.

Be Part of a Children’s Book About Transracial Adoption!
Are you part of a transracially adopted family? Be part of an HC student’s thesis project, a children’s book on transracial adoption! The purpose of the children’s book is to help transracially adopted families navigate their unique, special and sometimes challenging experience. It will also highlight and represent the diversity of different experiences that exist within transracial adoption. As a participant in this project, you will fill out this quick Interviewee Consent Form and Pre-Interview Questionnaire –both invaluable in shaping the thesis and book– and you may be invited to participate in an optional interview (this process ends on Saturday, December 10 at 11:59 p.m.). All participants are also entered to win a $50 gift card.

Fulbright US Student Program Information Session: Learn about the Fulbright US Student Program on  Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm in LinC 345. Fulbright supports students and alumni alike in a funded year abroad to study, research, or teach English in a choice of over 140 different countries worldwide. Join us in talking to scholars who have applied for the Fulbright program to learn about their experience and how you can get involved!

Gilman Scholarship Information Session: Learn about the Gilman Scholarship on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm in STAG 213. The Gilman Scholarship has supported many OSU students in their efforts to study abroad during their undergraduate years. Gilman offers up to $5000 for students with high financial need towards a study abroad program of the student’s choice. Join us and learn about how to apply and get abroad!

NEW AND THIS WEEK! IE Research Showcase \ IE Mocktail Event
Join IISE and Alpha Pi Mu for a research networking event from 1:30pm-2:20pm on Friday, November 18th in Kelley Engineering Center 1005/1007. Learn about ongoing research in the IE community from current undergraduate and graduate students. Parth Nilesh Khimsaria (’16 B.S. Manufacturing Engineering, ’16 B.S. Industrial Engineering) and Jordan Reed (’12 B.S. Industrial Engineering) are being inducted into the Council of Outstanding Early Career Engineers and will be sharing their experiences at this event.
 
Anyone interested in getting started with or learning about research within industrial engineering is invited to enjoy snacks and mocktails.

Submissions Needed for the Student Resources Digest!
The Student Resources Digest mailings will be starting again soon. This effort is one way that we work collaboratively to make students aware of services and resources available to them. We collect submissions from campus partners, compile them into a digest and mail them to you every two weeks of the term. Click here for an example digest from last fall. We’re now live and collecting submissions for fall term. Fall can be a great time to describe the services you offer and how to access them, even if you’re not announcing anything new or any date-specific events. To submit Digest content, use this Google form. If you have questions or comments about this effort, please contact Anna Bentley anna.bentley@oregonstate.edu or Clare Creighton at clare.creighton@oregonstate.edu.

HC Resources

These resources are available throughout the term.

  • The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. You can also get in touch with the main office by contacting honors.college@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541.737.6400. 
  • The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
    • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
    • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

West & Sackett Drop-In Office Hours
Bailey Garvin and Courtney Lira, the Honors College Student Engagement Coordinators, will be hosting office hours throughout fall term. Stop by if you have any questions regarding the Honors College, HCSA, how to get involved or just need general advice and someone to talk to!
