Do you ever find yourself feeling anxious about the past or future and struggling to focus on the present moment? When you do feel this way, you could try a grounding technique! Try the 5-4-3-2-1 method, where you think of 5 things you can see, 4 things you can feel, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This grounding technique can reconnect you to your senses, calm your nervous system, and focus your attention back to the present moment.

Take a study break at the Midnight Breakfast hosted by Honors X! Join them on Friday, Dec. 3 at midnight for free pastries, fruit, hot chocolate, and a space away from your homework for a little while. This event will be held at West’s 1st Floor Lounge and the Sackett E Lounge with food, friends, and fun. See you there!
UPCOMING! HSCA Winter Clothing Drive Volunteer Opportunity
To run the winter clothing drive the HSCA needs some important volunteer positions filled! These positions consist of “location checkers” who are in charge of going to one box location about once a week to collect clothes if the boxes are full! There will be locations on and off-campus and the collected clothes will be stored by the HSCA. Email Bryankel@oregonstate.edu if you are interested in volunteering!

NEW! Virtual Dean and Friends Conversation on Research in the National Labs
All Honors College students are invited to a virtual Dean and Friends conversation on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 12-12:50 p.m. over Zoom on “Research in the National Labs.” The guest speaker will be Aaron Brewster, a 2005 Honors College graduate in computer science. During his time at OSU, Aaron worked for Hewlett-Packard on photo-imaging software, and he went on to get his Ph.D. in molecular biology at the University of California, where he worked in protein crystallography, particularly in DNA replication. Aaron is currently a research scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the emerging field of serial crystallography, focusing on computational methods development. At this talk, he will share his experience and some of the distinctions between government, industry, and university research settings. NEXT WEEK! FYI Friday: Creating a College Financial Plan Presentation by CAFE
Want to learn more about finances in college? In this presentation on Friday, Dec. 10 from 12-1 p.m. attendees will learn about creating a financial plan for college which includes creating an academic plan and evaluating direct and indirect expenses and income. Additionally, attendees will learn about the basics of a budget, budgeting in relation to paying for college, the billing cycle at OSU, and the various resources available to help students pay for college or save money. The Faculty Research Showcases are an excellent way to connect with faculty members, learn more about their research, and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Honors College Winter Break Book Clubs!
An Honors College winter tradition is back! Sign-ups are now open for the HC’s Winter Break Faculty/Student Book Clubs! Each year, we invite a handful of university leaders, faculty, and friends to select a book to share with a small group of Honors College students. Group members each get a free copy of their group’s book to read over the break, and groups meet with their leader to discuss the book at the beginning of winter term over pizza. This is a fantastic way to meet some interesting members of the Oregon State community as well as connect with fellow HC students in a stimulating and informal setting – plus, you get a great book to read over the break! Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities
DEADLINE THIS WEEK! Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Program Innovation Lab Scholarship and Internship Fund
The Roundhouse Foundation Marine Studies Innovation Lab Scholarship supports Oregon State University undergraduate students in their second year or more of study who are participating in a paid internship with the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) Innovation Lab (iLab) in Newport, Oregon. There will be up to three awards of $18,640 each given to students. If you are interested you must submit your application through OSU ScholarDollars. The application opens Monday, Nov. 1 2021 and April 1, 2022. It will close on Dec 1, 2021 and May 1, 2022. Awards will be given out on Dec 15, 2021 and May 15, 2022. Learn more here. Jason Halstead and Robert Chapman Scholarship Fund
This scholarship has been created to help Oregon students in order to launch and support tomorrow’s thought leaders and change-makers. SNAP Outreach at the HSRC
Students may be eligible for $234 a month in grocery funds! SNAP is a federal nutrition benefits program, and the Human Services Resource Center at Oregon State assists with applications! For more information visit the SNAP link here.
Honors College Experiential Award Application
Honors students participating in professional conferences or in need of financial support for research expenses related to their thesis can apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship. The application can be found here. Only applicants who have submitted a signed thesis proposal to the Honors College are eligible for research expense support. The maximum award is $750, and all awards are paid as scholarships to recipients’ OSU accounts. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.
Udall Scholarship
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships of $7,000 to college sophomores and juniors on the basis of their leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to American Indian nations or to the environment. The OSU campus deadline is February 1, 2021, but it is recommended that you start applying now.
Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that these may continue to be challenging times for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant ($500). Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate. See the application for additional information.

Attend one of the College of Education’s open houses! These open houses will explore graduate teaching programs with an emphasis on the OSU-Cascades MAT program. The MAT program offers endorsements in Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Social Studies, Foundational Mathematics, Advanced Mathematics, Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. From exploring efforts by French leaders to confront climate change to immersing yourself in France’s history, culture and food system, hear how OSU faculty plan to transform the cities of Paris and Lyon into dynamic, interactive classrooms for 18 days. Academics for Student Athletes has multiple openings for tutors. These are paid on-campus positions that offer flexible schedules. EMT Research Symposium
This symposium will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.in Oregon State University’s Horizon Room at the Memorial Union. It will feature Environmental and Molecular Toxicology Department alumni from industry, government, and academia as well as the current faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars to present their cutting-edge research and career experiences. The meeting aims to be a platform to explore the intersections between the research and careers of biologists, chemists, epidemiologists, regulatory scientists, and more. Community Health Fellowship Gap Year
The Community Health Fellowship is a unique “gap year” opportunity for recent college graduates from across the country. The organization provides housing and a monthly educational stipend. Project Horseshoe Farm offers Community Health Fellowship programs in Alabama and California. This upcoming year, HSF is offering a traditional Gap-Year Fellowship, which will begin in June of 2022 and finish in July of 2023at Greensboro, Marion, and Pomona sites. For applicants who are available and interested there is also a 6-month Fellowship opportunity in Greensboro from January through July of 2022. It will be shorter, but similar in experience to the full-year Fellowship. The application deadline for the 2022-23 gap-year Fellowship is on Sunday, Feb. 13 2022. Washington Leadership Program Applications for 2022 are now Open
The Washington Leadership Program (WLP) is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications from high-potential South Asian American college students for the 2022 summer leadership program scheduled to take place from June 11, 2022 until August 5, 2022. The application due Sunday, Jan. 9 is available here. Interns will receive a total stipend of $2,000 and will be required to complete 2-3 short writing assignments during the internship. Updated SLUG Hours and Info!
The HC student learning space in the Learning Innovation Center, room 340 – called the SLUG – is open! Fall term SLUG hours:
– Sunday – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
– Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
– Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
– Saturday – noon to 6 p.m.
The SLUG features study and social areas, more than 20 computers, a scanner and a friendly HC student staff member who can help with any questions. In addition, honors students can print for free when using SLUG computers! The SLUG also offers a small kitchen. Bring your own coffee pods and brew up a cup in our new Keurig machine! The HC Forgot Your Lunch food cabinet is available as well with free snacks for anyone who needs it.
