HC peer mentors are current OSU students who have established themselves at the university and the HC for at least one academic school year. The peer mentor experience has a lot to offer you; including boosting your leadership skills, improving your career profile, meeting new people and gaining a fulfilling experience. You can also earn an HC elective credit – HC 409 Peer Mentoring. Did a professor inspire you to greater heights or change your perspective on a subject? Was your thesis mentor key in your career path ahead of you? Did you leave a class inspired and motivated? Is there anyone in the Honors College that you feel deserves to be recognized? NEW! Honors College Day of Giving Success!
Last Wednesday, April 28 was Dam Proud Day, the annual OSU Day of Giving, and the Honors College had an outstanding day, with 98 donors contributing $38,987.50 to differential tuition scholarships. That currently (results are still preliminary) ranks 8th at OSU in dollars raised and 12th in donors. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day such a success!

Connect with HC Alum and Recent Med School Graduate
Dr. (Captain) David Shumway is a 2014 Honors College graduate in Biology, and a recent D.O. medical school graduate from A. T. Still University. He is a recipient of the 4 year Health Professions Scholarship Program and an officer in the U.S. Air Force who will complete his residency in Internal Medicine on active duty at Keesler Air Force Base and the University of Mississippi. Before going to medical school, Dr. Shumway did the Disney College Program internship at Walt Disney World in Orlando and worked for the Mouse for 11 months. He is happy to answer questions about medical school, military scholarship programs and working for Disney. THIS WEEK! Stage 1 Workshops are Going Away – Register Now!
If you haven’t already checked it off your list, be sure to enroll in a Stage 1 workshop this term! Starting in fall 2021, Stage 1 will be a one-credit, ten-week course required for all incoming students. We won’t offer the one-hour Stage 1 workshops after spring 2021.
As a reminder, Stage 1 workshops allow you to complete the first stage of your honors thesis, which includes learning more about the possibilities and requirements for the honors thesis and creating your personal thesis map in a 45-minute workshop. Register to attend the Stage 1 workshop here. Remaining spring term Stage One workshops are:

Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student. Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.

TODAY! Student IT Communications Assistant Positions Open – Apply Now
In this position, students will work with the University Information Technology team to execute a variety of communications, both written and visual, for internal and external audiences. They will also help with the creation of presentations, newsletters, blog posts, emails and other deliverables to communicate inside and outside of UIT. The students will help execute a social media strategy for UIT, as well as author and publish web pages for a variety purposes and audiences. Impact Studio is where teams of faculty, students and staff develop and launch bold initiatives that advance OSU’s strategic plan and improve the university’s financial strength. The studio is currently hiring several part-time paid positions for Impact Studio Design Interns (maximum 15 hours per week during the term, 30 hours per week during breaks). Interns will work for Impact Studio with the Office of Provost at OSU.
This internship program is designed to give hands-on experience researching the potential of business initiatives originating from the Oregon State University community. As a student design intern, you will take part in a variety of tasks needed to evaluate the audience needs, market potential, competition and industry landscape for our initiatives; as well as have opportunities to provide design ideas and perform tasks that will help our department grow overall. Beaver Connect is looking for Peer Mentors for 2021-2022 mentoring teams! This program will match you as a co-mentor with a faculty member to lead crucial discussions on navigating college, achieving success and getting more out of the OSU experience with a group of three to four new-to-OSU students. This is a paid position that will help you make connections with faculty and peers and develop resume-building leadership skills! We are particularly interested in undergraduate students who identify as students of color, first-generation, low-income, transfer, student athletes or have experience in the University Exploratory Studies Program. Career Assistants support the mission of the Career Development Center by contributing to the success of student professional development and leadership. This is accomplished by providing high-quality career advising and career education to peers; assisting in the coordination of campus programs and events; managing online platforms like Handshake; strengthening external partnerships with faculty, alumni, employers, parents and the surrounding community via written and verbal communication; and providing excellent customer service to thousands of stakeholders. Summer Internships with Flexport, Supply Chain Operations
Freight forwarding is the coordination and shipment of goods from one place to another and it’s what makes global trade possible. Flexport is on a mission to make global trade easier for everyone because we believe it can help connect the world and break down economic barriers.
Our Supply Chain Operations Team aims to help successfully execute our client’s shipping requirements and improve operational efficiency for the company by working together cross-functionally and collaborating with different departments. We are looking for highly motivated interns to support this team during the summer of 2021! This year, all roles will be virtual.
Interns will be assigned a manager and mentor dedicated to their success, an overview of Flexport air or ocean operations in the U.S., projects and assignments to help build knowledge and skills while making a direct impact on the business, an opportunity to collaborate with other teams to execute shipments for clients, visibility to Flexport leaders, opportunities to present work or projects and the chance to join team building activities to become familiar with their immediate team and other employees.

Writing Consultants provide support through writing and research consultations in person (when possible next year), remotely (using Zoom) and through written feedback provided via email. We provide substantial training and mentoring for these positions and encourage applications from anyone who is interested in helping other students and excited about working on a collaborative and supportive team of peer writing consultants. THIS WEEK! OHP and SNAP Virtual Sign-Up Events
SNAP helps make college expenses more affordable by providing up to $234/month to buy groceries. The funds are loaded into an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which is like a debit card that can be used to purchase food at grocery stores, convenience stores and farmers markets. OHP is free comprehensive health coverage for Oregonians who meet income requirements and other criteria.
The HSRC and the Benton County Health Department will host a virtual OHP and SNAP enrollment event where OHP-certified community partners will assist you and your family with the enrollment processes. The event takes place from May 3-7, with two sessions held per day, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. Registration is required, so please sign up here.
Students who are citizens or permanent residents may apply for OHP as SNAP as long as they meet income limits and other eligibility requirements are met. If you are undocumented or DACA, you may apply for Emergency OHP, but are not eligible for SNAP. If you have a child under age 18, they can be covered through OHP regardless of immigration status. Both OHA and SNAP are free, and while we encourage you to apply for both, you are not required to.

NEW! “Things I Know and Things I Wish I Knew”: Reflections from 25 Years of Being a Woman of Color in Geoscience
Undergraduates from all disciplines are encouraged to join a workshop from Dr. Aradhna Tripati, founder and director of the Center for Diverse Leadership in Science, and associate professor at University of California in Los Angeles. She grew up in LA and is the daughter of immigrants from Fiji. Earlier this week, Dr. Tripati appeared on CNN to talk about the climate emergency and the critical importance of Indigenous rights and expertise in Native communities and institutions. Dr. Tripati will reflect on her career in geoscience as a woman of color at an event on May 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. To register, please visit the link here. THIS WEEK! 2021 University Distinguished Professors Lectures
Please join us at this year’s recognition events on Wednesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m. PDT honoring the 2021 University Distinguished Professors, Professors Julia Jones and Richard Settersten. The University Distinguished Professors lectures provide a unique opportunity to learn about the research and achievements of the faculty who receive the University’s highest academic honor. Since 1988, the University has awarded the title of University Distinguished Professor to current OSU faculty members who have achieved national and international distinction for their contributions in research and creative work, teaching and mentoring, public engagement and service.
- Register here for Professor Richard Settersten’s May 5 lecture entitled Human Development and a Sociological Imagination: A Social Scientist’s Journey. Professor Settersten is Head of the School of Social and Behavioral Health Sciences in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences. Holder of the Barbara E. Knudson Endowed Chair in Family Policy, he is an internationally recognized expert in the field of human development and one of the leading life course scholars in the world. His book, Not Quite Adults, is a seminal work on the modern transition to adulthood. His new book, Living on the Edge, reveals how members of the 1900 generation navigated the revolutionary changes of the 20th century, bringing significant lessons for lives today. He is the recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Lifetime Career Award by the Society for the Study of Human Development, a leading U.S. professional organization in his field.
- Register here for Professor Julia Jones’ May 6 lecture entitled Ecosystem Response to Climate Change at Long-Term Ecological Research Sites. Professor Jones teaches Geography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences. She develops novel data analysis methods for studying questions related to human impact on the environment, with a specific focus on forest landscapes, water and resource management. Her record includes exemplary teaching, mentoring of students and young faculty, and administrative service widely across OSU. She contributes regularly to national and international policy debates and her research has attracted over $31M in grants to OSU, with many projects focusing on the synthesis of ecosystem responses to human perturbation and global change and integrating research, training, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
THIS WEEK! Deadline to Register for 2021 OSU Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence
The Office of URSA is excited to announce that registration for OSU’s 2021 Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence student submissions is now open! CUE is an annual showcase for OSU undergraduates to present their research and creative projects to the OSU community. Undergraduates from all academic disciplines, in all years of study and all stages of research or creative work are invited to present.
CUE will take the form of a virtual symposium again this year. Each presenter will record a three-minute lightning talk about their work and post it on a central Canvas page where the symposium will be hosted. The Canvas page will be distributed to OSU community members who will be able to view presenters’ recordings, ask questions, and engage in dialogue via the Canvas discussion board function. We hope this event will bring our community closer during this time of social distancing.
The deadline for registering to present is Friday, May 7 at 5:00 p.m. Students can submit their proposals here. The Canvas page will be made public for viewing on May 27 and 28 – link to come! More details and the registration link are available here.
