College of Pharmacy names a new Associate Dean for Academic Programs

The College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University is pleased to announce that Dr. Theresa M. Filtz, currently Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, has been appointed as the new Associate Dean for Academic Programs.

Dr. Filtz earned a BS Chemistry degree from the University of Virginia and a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where her thesis topic focused on the target receptors for antipsychotic drugs. She completed postdoctoral training at the University of North Carolina on signal transduction pathways prior to joining Oregon State University as faculty. Her major teaching responsibilities focus on the mechanisms of action of drugs that affect the nervous system. She has served as major advisor to MS and PhD students in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the interdisciplinary Molecular and Cellular Biology program areas focused on intracellular signaling.

Among other responsibilities, she previously served the College of Pharmacy as Director of Graduate Programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and was a long-time member and former Chair of the OSU Faculty Senate Graduate Council. As Chair of the College of Pharmacy Curriculum Committee for five years previously, she was involved in the first major revision of the PharmD curriculum since inception. She has experience with development of Ecampus courses; strategic planning at both the College and Department levels; productions of professional program accreditation and graduate program review self-study reports; and development, implementation and assessment of programmatic learning outcomes.

Dr. Filtz started in her new role on January 18, 2021, a new position created upon the retirement of Dr. Gary DeLander who served as Executive Associate Dean with responsibility for academic programs, among other duties, for many years. She looks forward to new opportunities to strengthen the graduate PhD and MS programs in Pharmaceutical Sciences and the professional PharmD program in Pharmacy, in collaboration with our degree partner Oregon Health & Sciences University, with attention to improving diversity and assuring equity for all learners and trainees by elevating inclusive practices.
