On a beautiful September morning, a group of chalk artists of various ages and (dis)abilities gathered in downtown Corvallis to kick off the sidewalk chalk art campaign Beauty For Access. Beauty For Access helps mark the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act while also calling caring public attention to the ongoing inaccessibility of material environments for people with disabilities. Participants beautified material spaces (e.g. sidewalks and plazas) to imagine them as more welcoming to the bodyminds of disabled people.

Celebrate ADA30: Virtual Open Mic
The Corvallis Disability Equity Center (DEC) and OSU’s ADA30 Anniversary Committee invite you to join us in celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act at a virtual open mic! On July 26th at 2:00pm, we will gather via Google Meet to celebrate ADA30 and our diverse disabled communities by showcasing artwork, poetry, songs, and performances pieces by and for disabled participants.
While this event is free and open to all, we aim to center disabled participants and performers. We ask that non-disabled participants who wish to perform be mindful of the amount of space they take up.
Performers have two options for sharing their work: submitting a pre-recorded video, or performing live at the time of the virtual event.
Please fill out this registration form if you are interested in attending and/or performing. If you are interested but not sure how to share your artwork or performance, please still complete this form in as much detail as you can and we will reach out to you about possible options.
Happy Disability Pride Month!

Article: “Community creation: ‘Art for All’ invites participants to collaborate on an artistic vision”
Article preview: “Picture this: You’re online watching an artist create; seeing him sketch faint lines over a large piece of paper and fill in the shapes with washes of color. You’re inspired. You have an idea for the piece. Maybe it’s something you’ve created yourself, or maybe you just wish the artist would add it in for you. You want to be a part of this project. And so you get on the phone, or you send an email, or you scan in your drawing, or you type your thought into the provided chat window — and as you watch, the artist takes your idea and makes it a part of the work. Welcome to ‘Art for All,’ an artist-in-residency partnership sponsored by Corvallis agencies Cornerstone Associates and the Disability Equity Center. The partnership is starting by asking participants to join in a real-time, collaborative work it’s calling an ‘art-making journey’ from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday the week of July 13. The theme is ‘local rivers.’ Corvallis artist Andrew Myers will lead the project, bringing the joint artistic vision to life as people call, email or chat online about the work.” Read the full article by Andy Cripe at the Corvallis Gazette-Times.
