What Would This Cost?

The current prototype for the wearable rape prevention device relies on roughly 13.9 grams of TPU plastic and 5.7 grams of PLA support. For the TPU plastic, a Texin filament would be most desirable. While collecting pricing information on Texin TPU plastic is difficult without precise descriptions about the rigidity of the Texin material, 450 grams of clear TPU filament for biomedical purposes can be purchased for 65€ on Medphen’s website. With a conversion rate of roughly 1.22 dollars per euro, this comes out to roughly $79.30 for 450 grams of filament ($0.18 per gram). For the PLA support filament, 1 kilogram of this material can be found on Amazon for $21.99 ($0.02 per gram). The table below describes the cost per device, using these prices.

Material Amount Required (grams) Cost ($ per gram) Overall Cost Distributor
Biomedical TPU Filament 13.9 $0.1762 $2.4495 Medphen
PLA Filament 5.7 $0.0220 $0.1253 Amazon

The final cost of the product per unit with these materials would be $2.57. This small unit cost could allow for large scale production for women in the Corvallis community.

How Can This Be Funded?

Organizations that could contribute funding are described in the table below.

Funding Program URL Funding Amount
Oregon Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (ODSVS) Fund Link ~8,000,000
RAINN Link not specified
Department of Justice [Office of Violence Agains Women] Link ~2,750,000 (from 2018)
Survivor and Advocacy Resource Center (SARC) at OSU Link not specified

Each of these organizations are meant to support cases of sexual assault by funding technologies and materials that support victims. Since this product would help prevent cases of sexual assault, each of these organization might be willing to support the wearable rape prevention device. However, the amount that each of these organization will be able to support this technology is difficult to tell. Multiple grants are available, but none disclose the exact amount they might be able to financially support our product to allow for large scale production. Each of the organizations and grants are directly or indirectly funded my the federal government. For the scale of this project, the Survivor and Advocacy Resource Center (SARC) at OSU and the Oregon Domestic and Sexual Violence Services (ODSVS) Fund are the best candidates for this project due to their commitment to addressing sexual assault within Oregon.

  1. Recommendations for editing this page:
    1. “Organizations that” that rather than “Organization that”.
    2. Please copy the list from the sheet and paste it into this page rather than link to a Google doc that no one else will have access to.
    3. The first time you mention ” this product ” or “the device” or “this technology” use its name.
    4. I recommend “might be” instead of “would be” willing.

    • Thank you for this comment! I will address these points and add more context on the actual pricing of the product right now.

  2. For mass production, do you plan to move production over to injection molding over 3d printing to save on material and manufacturing cost as well as production time or is 3d printing the final goal?
