This weekend is a weekend of celebrations, including Fall Festival and Festival Latino in Corvallis.

In Berkeley, they are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Free Speech Movement.  Our own associate professor emerita Jean Moule will be in Berkeley for that anniversary.  She and her now husband were arrested in Berkeley’s Sproul Hall back in 1964 with a cover photo in the San Francisco Chronicle.  Read her essay reflecting on that event here: Fifty Years of Love and Resilience.

El Hispanic News has a nice piece online that features folks from OSU: Los Porteños: Building Bridges with Words.  Los Porteños is a group of Latin@ writers in Oregon.  In the article, they discuss the advantages of being able to share their writing with other authors who are bilingual and bicultural (if not multilingual and multicultural).  They are preparing for an upcoming performance, WORDS THAT BURN, September 25-28, at Milagro in Portland.  It’ll be part of La Luna Nueva Multidisciplinary Arts Festival.

While you’re on the El Hispanic site, you might also check out the article, Environmental Groups Lag Nation in Diversity.

Our Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CLD) Work Group has been renamed.  We are now the Social and Environmental Justice (SEJ) Work Group, and this is our new blog.  Welcome!  We remain committed to cultural and linguistic diversity in education.  Our new name reflects a more deliberate inclusion of environmental issues in education.  As we have been, we continue to be advocates for equity.

You’ll find all posts from our former CLD blog archived here.  New posts are on their way.  Also coming soon…our fall schedule of meetings and events under the Calendar menu heading.

Did you hear Karen Thompson (OSU College of Education Assistant Professor) on the radio this morning?  KLCC interviewed her about the federal grant she received for work with the Oregon Department of Education and WestEd on studying academic achievement of all Oregon K-12 students who enter school as English language learners.  A full news release is online.

The Associated Press (AP) published a story on June 28, States Encourage Bilingualism with Diploma Seals, that has been picked up by several news sources across the nation.  It features 2014 graduates from Corvallis High School’s Dual Language Program.  The teacher in their story, Amanda Filloy Sharp, is co-instructor of one of our summer Dual Language Academy courses, Biliteracy in the Schools.  If you’re interested in taking that course and/or Spanish in the Community, contact Stacey Lee (stacey.lee@oregonstate.edu or 541-737-2983) for more information.
