A reading of Wetback by Elaine Romero will be presented in the Withycombe Lab Theatre at 7:30 on Tuesday, Jan. 26.  There will be a talk back after the performance and  Ms. Romero will be present.  This production is presented through a grant of the Memorial Union Pepsi  Fund.  The reading is free and open to the public. Due to the architecture of the Lab Theatre, latecomers cannot be seated.  For more information contact Prof. Charlotte Headrick at 541 737-2853 or at cheadrick@oregonstate.edu.

SCHOOLS – the first and ultimate hope for integration – are generally ill-equipped to serve immigrant teenagers. The traditional paradigm relegates them to the sidelines. Yet, it is in school that the children of immigration determine where they belong in the reality and imagination of their new culture. I Learn America is a documentary that follows five students as they broach the issues of mastering English, family dynamics, gender identity, adapting to life in the United States, and more.

We will be showing this film on the Corvallis campus as part of OSU’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration 2016:

Our College of Education has the honor of co-hosting distinguished math professor Marta Civil of the University of Arizona while she is here at OSU. She will be giving a public talk on Tuesday, June 2 at 5:30 in the LaSells Stewart CenterLanguage and Culture Considerations in the Mathematics Education of Latina/o Students. Please see the attached event flyer. We hope you can be there!

At our last SEJ meeting, we watched an interview with Derrick Jensen from the Earth at Risk 2014 Conference in San Francisco. The entire 37 minute video is worthwhile and thought provoking. Jensen is speaking in a very casual, unscripted way for this interview, and yet he is not subtle with his opinions. He speaks specifically about schools and educators starting at 15:30.

Currently, several events of interest are happening on campus, including the following:

Wednesday, February 25, 2015 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Memorial Union 213: Pan-Afrikan Sankofa Room

From OSU Today: “Join a coalition of faculty, staff, and student organizations for a community dialogue about the learning and working conditions at OSU and the ways in which we can all work together to ensure that OSU embodies the values of social justice.  More details here or email joseph.orosco@oregonstate.edu.”Sponsored by: OSU-American Association of University Professors, Allied Students for Another Politics!, Coalition of Graduate Employees, Service Employees International Union, MEChA, Anarres Project for Alternative Futures, Intercultural Student Services/Student Leadership Involvement.

I first learned about this event through Joseph Orosco and Tony Vogt. If you haven’t yet seen their new blog for Anarres Project for Alternative Futures, it’s worth a look. As the site’s introduction states, “Inspired by the speculative fiction of Oregon writer Ursula K. LeGuin, the Anarres Project is a forum for conversations, ideas, and initiatives that promote a future free of domination, exploitation, oppression, war, and empire.”
