Week 8: Blog Assignment

Was I motivated to stay at my last job? The answer was no, but I stayed for as long as I did because I needed to make money quickly. The job I was on was a temp job, and we just got paid hourly with no benefits. It was a 12-hour shift for four days. It was the only job available in my area that was able to hire me right away and was really easy to do. I was getting paid $20 an hour which is not bad compared to other part-time jobs but the environment and work culture was not ideal. The company management and workers were just working but not efficiently. There was basically no values or motivation in the employees that my coworkers had drama about others in the warehouse.

The cork and compensation were not worth me going back to work there. What got even more complicated during working there was employees were talking about salary and base pay. Those hired on, meaning those employees who work for the company, not through a third party, got paid more. Which made sense to me but what did not make sense is that temp workers that were favored by management were getting paid a dollar or more on their pay. So of course here that I tired to work hard during my stay there to see if anything changed but it didn’t. I was frustrated at first but I also understood because those other temp workers were working there for a longer period of time compared to me. Lastly, I did ask my coworkers that were older why they stay and they said they earn benefits like healthcare and dental. Some of them were actually retired and working there as a side hustle to get benefits and some extra money. I was confused because I thought if you retire you are done being employed but that was not the case. I learned what I wanted to expect from a job and what to ask for when applying for a job.
