Four Oregon State University Honors College students were recently announced as nominees for the 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Read below for more from Oregon State’s National and Global Scholarships Office:

Oregon State University’s National and Global Scholarships Advising office is pleased to announce that four students have been nominated to represent OSU and compete nationally for the 2023 Barry Goldwater Scholarship. Final selection of Goldwater scholarships will be confirmed in spring 2023.

Kimberly Truong is a second-year Honors College student in the Colleges of Engineering and Science double majoring in computer science and mathematics with concentrations in artificial intelligence and statistics. In her career, Kimberly aims to pursue a Ph.D. in machine learning and conduct research on the intersection of machine learning and software engineering while teaching at the university level. Mentors: Weeg-Keen Wong from OSU and Christian Kastner and Bogdan Vasilescu from Carnegie Mellon University.

Sahana Shah is a third-year Honors College student in the College of Science majoring in biochemistry and biophysics with a concentration in neuroscience and minors in Spanish and chemistry. In her career, Sahana aims to pursue an M.D./ Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics and contribute to the discovery and development of drug targets through the elucidation of complex molecular mechanisms that underlie infectious diseases at a biomedical research institution. Mentors: Elisar Barbar, Joseph Loo, and Kari Van Zee.

Andrea Perez is a third-year Honors College student in the College of Science majoring in microbiology with minors in chemistry and Asian languages and cultures. Andrea aims to pursue a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences and contribute to scientific advances in neuromicrobiology. She is most interested in the relationship between the gut microbiome and brain function and the possibility of discovering new therapies for neurological diseases. Mentors: John Fowler, Stuart Sarbacker, and Hannah Rowe.

Sean Bullock is a third-year Honors College student in the College of Engineering majoring in mechanical engineering with minors in business and music performance. In his career, Sean aims to pursue a Ph.D. in bioengineering and lead a neuromodulation research lab in industry or academia. Sean has also initiated Cortava, a neuroscience startup company dedicated to developing a novel neuromodulation device. Mentors: Toni Doolen and Ravi Balasubramanian from Oregon State, and Juan Barraza from VirtueLab.

The Oregon State University Goldwater nomination committee includes faculty from the Colleges of Science and Engineering: Skip Rochefort and Kelsey Stoerzinger from chemical, biological, and environmental engineering; Kevin Gable from chemistry joined by new member Louis Wojcinski stepping in next year; Kari Van Zee, Nate Mortimer and Juan Vanegas from biochemistry and biophysics; and David Hendrix from biochemistry and biophysics and computer science. Student advising and nominations were coordinated by LeAnn Adam and Becca Otto in the OSU Office of National and Global Scholarships Advising.

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship serves as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate.
