The Great Pumpkin Run Volunteer Opportunity
Join the Honors College Student Association in volunteering at this great fundraising opportunity for a non-profit organization that “assist(s) people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to enjoy active, productive and empowered lives.” Come volunteer on Saturday, October 8 at the Benton County Fairgrounds from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm! Use the link here to RSVP for this event.

NEW! Reception with OSU President Jayathi Murthy and the Honors College Board of Regents
On Friday, October 21, as a part of the fall meeting of the Honors College Board of Regents, the college’s external leadership group, there is an afternoon reception in the SLUG with new OSU President Jayathi Murthy beginning at 3:30 p.m. Students, faculty, staff and other community members are welcome to attend. THIS WEEK! HC Morning of Service
Join the Honors College and participate in our fall community service event! The Honors College Morning of Service’s mission is to come together to serve our campus, neighbors and surrounding communities. This volunteering event empowers individuals, builds bridges, breaks down barriers, addresses social problems and moves us closer to being a strong, empowered community. Join us on Sunday, October 9 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at Tunison Park in Southtown Corvallis. RSVP here.

The Non-Linear Approach to Medical School – A Discussion with HC alum Mickaila Johnston ’98
All Honors College students are invited to a Zoom conversation with Honors College alum Mickaila Johnston on Monday, October 10 from 12-12:50 p.m. on “The Non-Linear Approach to Medical School.” Mickaila grew up in Bend, Oregon, and enlisted in the Navy immediately after graduating in 1988. After a few years serving aboard submarines out of San Diego, he came to Oregon State, graduating in 1998 with his H.B.S. in radiation health physics. He then matriculated to the military’s medical school in Bethesda, Maryland (the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences). Since graduating with his M.D., he’s served in Naval Special Forces, Army Special Forces, on submarines and in hospitals all around the world. Student and Faculty Trivia Night 
On Wednesday, October 12 at 6 p.m. in the Sackett F/G Lounge, come compete against Honors College staff and students to win a game of Kahoot! Pizza will be offered for everyone, and the winners will receive a prize that will be announced at the event. The purpose of this event is to get to know your fellow students and faculty of the Honors College, so feel free to bring a friend! Make sure to RSVP here!

The HC College Academic Advising Page has been Updated
The Honors College Academic Advising Canvas page had some big updates this summer. Whether you are in your first term with the HC or graduating in the next term or two, this page has helpful information for every HC student. Updates include graduation and thesis submission checklists, resources for each thesis stage and task, drop-in advising schedule and more. Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities

HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

NEW! Apply for the University of Central Florida’s Engineering and Computer Science PhD Program
The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) at the University of Central Florida (Orlando, FL, USA) is renewing its Early Action opportunity for individuals considering beginning their PhD studies in the Fall 2023 academic semester. Any individual completing a new application for a CECS PhD program by Tuesday, November 1 will receive an application fee waiver. Join the University Legislative Scholars Program
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) is a year-long experiential learning program that enables students to engage in public policy issues at the state level while also increasing student advocacy in the Oregon legislative process. Program participants interact directly with state legislators, advocates, legislative staff and other public policy practitioners who are actively involved in Oregon’s State Legislature. Visit the University Legislative Scholars Website here for more information and how to apply. 

Research Assistants Needed for the Kindergarten Readiness Research Program
This research program has a federal grant to scale up and test the efficacy of the Red Light, Purple Light (RLPL) movement and music self-regulation intervention in preschool children. More information on RLPL can be found here. They are looking for undergraduate research assistants who are interested in working with young children in school settings and learning about research and education in the real world. For more information and to apply click the link here or email kreadiness@oregonstate.edu.

Boeing Internships and Job Opportunities
Boeing has now posted regional requisitions for Summer 2023 engineering internships, as well as entry-level roles starting Winter/Spring. These are “hub” requisitions, meaning that they will be used to generate a candidate pool from which organizations across the company can hire. Once again, it is Scribendi submission time! Scribendi is a literary magazine that is conceptualized, designed, edited and produced by honors students just like you. It includes works of short fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, visual art, open media, photography and foreign language created by honors students from across the country. The submission deadline for this year is Friday,October 14, so make sure you get your submissions in before then! PLUS, by submitting, you will have a chance to be published in a nationally recognized magazine and a chance at winning a $250 cash prize! Click here to submit!

Marine Logo Design Contest
Are you artistic? Do you love science? Do you want to win $250? If any of these questions have piqued your interest, read on! For the last three years, fishermen along the Oregon coast have partnered with scientists at OSU to collect dissolved oxygen observations from inside their crab pots. We have been calling this project Fishermen Investigating Seasonal Hypoxia — or FISH. You can learn more about the project at our website fishresearch.net. We are looking for a logo that we can put on hats, stickers, etc. for the project. The best logo will be chosen by the artwork selection committee, and the winner will receive an amazon gift card for $250! The contest period closes on Friday, October 21 at 11:59 p.m. Please use this google form to upload artwork. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Linus Stoltz stoltzl@oregonstate.edu

Submissions Needed for the Student Resources Digest!
The Student Resources Digest mailings will be starting again soon. This effort is one way that we work collaboratively to make students aware of services and resources available to them. We collect submissions from campus partners, compile them into a digest and mail them to you every two weeks of the term. Click here for an example digest from last fall. We’re now live and collecting submissions for fall term. Fall can be a great time to describe the services you offer and how to access them, even if you’re not announcing anything new or any date-specific events. To submit Digest content, use this Google form. If you have questions or comments about this effort, please contact me (anna.bentley@oregonstate.edu) or Clare Creighton at clare.creighton@oregonstate.edu.

HC Resources

These resources are available throughout the term.

  • The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. You can also get in touch with the main office by contacting honors.college@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541.737.6400. 
  • The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
    • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
    • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. If you would like to participate in fall term HC study groups, please email bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu by Monday, October 3!

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

West & Sackett Drop-In Office Hours
Bailey Garvin and Courtney Lira, the Honors College Student Engagement Coordinators, will be hosting office hours throughout fall term. Stop by if you have any questions regarding the Honors College, HCSA, how to get involved or just need general advice and someone to talk to! Drop-in hours will start week 1 and will be posted in each Monday Message and on the HC office doors in West & Sackett.
