Welcome to the 2022-2023 academic year! All of us here in the Honors College are so excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to support you in making the most of your time at Oregon State University and in the HC. Whether you are new to the honors community or returning, Honors College advisors and staff members are here to help you connect with everything OSU has to offer. This weekly Monday Message email will keep you informed about upcoming activities and opportunities, and I encourage you to engage in and explore whatever is of interest to you – everyone in the honors community is welcome! If you have any questions or face any challenges, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the Honors College staff or faculty members. Each of us on the HC team is committed to your success and is ready to support you, however we can. I look forward to everything that we can achieve this year together.

HCSA Events This Week

NEXT MONDAY/ WEEKLY! Honors College Student Association — First Meeting Next week
Meet other students, volunteer, practice leadership, plan events or get involved with the Honors College this fall! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. in LInC 314. We’re looking for new students to join the leadership team and have specific positions open for first-year studentsCome learn more about HCSA! All HC students are welcome to join.

NEXT MONDAY! HCSA Ice Cream Social
On Monday, September 26, get ready for an ice cream social after the HCSA general meeting! This will be taking place outside LInC 314. Enjoy some ice cream and learn about leadership opportunities, event planning, volunteering, networking opportunities and more within HCSA and the wider HC community. All are welcome to join HCSA! 

UPCOMING! HCSA First Year Elections and PR Chair Election
Looking for an opportunity to meet other students and get involved with the Honors College this fall? The Honors College Student Association is holding elections for several positions at the HCSA meeting on Monday of week 2 (Oct. 3) from 5 pm-6 pm in LInC 314. Click on this link to learn more about open positions and put yourself in the running! We look forward to meeting you!

HC Announcements and Events

TODAY! First Year New Student Induction
To welcome the newest members of the Honors College, the First Year New Student Induction will be held today, Monday, September 19 from 8:30-10:00 a.m. in LINC 100. This event is an official welcome. It is an opportunity to orient new students to the various services and resources offered. All incoming students are expected to attend, and friends and family members are most welcome.

TOMORROW! HC Summer Read Discussion Groups
Every incoming Honors College student participates in our Summer Read program. This program provides you with a free e-book to read over the summer months, and students then meet for an hour-long facilitated conversation with fellow incoming honors students about the book at the very beginning of fall term. This year’s selected book is Isabel Wilkerson’s Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Check your confirmation email for your sign-up time! All discussions will take place in the LInC on the third floor. 

TOMORROW! New Student Convocation
Convocation is one of two seminal ceremonies that bookend the academic year. Whereas Commencement celebrates the graduating class, Convocation celebrates the incoming class. Each fall, Oregon State University welcomes the incoming class of students at the New Student Convocation ceremony. Convocation, which literally translates to “come together,” is a ceremony in which we welcome OSU’s new students to campus. Please plan to meet in the Sackett Hall F & G lounge or West Hall main lounge at 2:15 p.m. to walk to the New Student Walk and Convocation beginning in the MU Quad. Dean Doolen will be escorting all incoming Honors College students on the largest tradition of OSUWelcome, your official academic welcome to Oregon State, from 3-5 p.m.

THIS WEEK! HC Walking Tours
Join our HC Ambassadors and take a tour of Downtown Corvallis or our Natural Areas! Ambassadors will be leading a group at noon-1 p.m. and 4:15-5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21. Ambassadors will be waiting outside the LInC. Register here and check your OSU email for more information!

UPCOMING! HC Tailgate
Join the Honors College in cheering on the Beavers as they battle against USC! The tailgate will be held on theLInC patio & lawn from3:30-5:30 p.m on Saturday, September 24. It will have free food, music, lawn games and plenty of spirit. After the tailgate, join a walking group headed to the game at Reser Stadium! Make sure to RSVP here

UPCOMING! Transfer Student Induction
HC Transfer Students! This is your official welcome to the Honors community and an opportunity to orient yourself to the various services and facilities offered. All incoming transfer HC students or current OSU students who are new to the HC are invited to attend and friends and family members are most welcome. Join us in LInC 343 on Thursday, September 29 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. for this event. The induction will offer light pastries and an opportunity to meet fellow transfer students and faculty and staff.

NEW! The HC College Academic Advising Page has been Updated
The Honors College Academic Advising Canvas page had some big updates this summer. Whether you are in your first term with the HC or graduating in the next term or two, this page has helpful information for every HC student. Updates include graduation and thesis submission checklists, resources for each thesis stage and task, drop-in advising schedule and more. NEW! HC Course Spotlights
– HC 409 Civic Engagement
The Honors College provides an opportunity for HC students to earn credit while serving and learning in their community. To earn one honors elective credit, commit to volunteering 2-3 hours per week in a local community agency. Read the materials on the Canvas course page provided by Community Engagement & Leadership to guide your experience. At the end of the term submit the reflection assignment on Canvas by 5 pm the Monday of finals week. Registration instructions: contact Leanna.Dillon@oregonstate.edu to receive a learning agreement form, return the form signed by you and your site supervisor to receive an override to register for the course. Return the signed form and register for the course prior to the end of week 1. Graded: P/N. Satisfies: HC Elective

– HC 409 Conversants
The Honors College partners with the INTO OSU Cultural Ambassador Conversant Program (CACP) to provide an opportunity for honors students to earn credit while having a mutual cultural exchange with an international student. To earn one honors elective credit, you need to meet with an international student for an average of one hour per week throughout the term. Keep a log of the times and places of meetings and the topics discussed, and at the end of the term write a two-page reflection paper about the experience. The HC is currently accepting nominations for students to feature in the Student Spotlight series. If you know of a student who you think deserves recognition submit their name and the reason for the nomination here.

Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities

NEW! Funding Available for HC Students
There are many scholarship and funding opportunities available to help HC students succeed at OSU. Click the link here to find different scholarships that the Honors College offers. Some of these being the DeLoach Work Scholarship and Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship and other potential help.

NEW! HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

NEW! HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

Professional Development & Job Opportunities

NEW! SCARC Student Archivist Job Opening
In partnership with the OSU Honors College, the Valley Library’s Special Collections and Archives Research Center (SCARC) is excited to offer one Student Archivist position in its Public Services Unit.  This position will primarily focus on supporting Public Services faculty and staff in providing exceptional service to our researchers, both in person and remotely, and through work on special projects. No archives, library, or other heritage institution experience is necessary, and students of all disciplines are encouraged to apply! If you’re interested in the position or have any questions, please email a current resume and 5-page writing sample to Anna Dvorak at Anna.Dvorak@oregonstate.eduThe deadline to apply is October 2, 2022.

NEW! Join the University Legislative Scholars Program
The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) is a year-long experiential learning program that enables students to engage in public policy issues at the state level while also increasing student advocacy in the Oregon legislative process. Program participants interact directly with state legislators, advocates, legislative staff and other public policy practitioners who are actively involved in Oregon’s State Legislature. Visit the University Legislative Scholars Website here for more information and how to apply. 

NEW! Research Assistants Needed for the Kindergarten Readiness Research Program
This research program has a federal grant to scale up and test the efficacy of the Red Light, Purple Light (RLPL) movement and music self-regulation intervention in preschool children. More information on RLPL can be found here. They are looking for undergraduate research assistants who are interested in working with young children in school settings and learning about research and education in the real world. For more information and to apply click the link here or email kreadiness@oregonstate.edu.

NEW! Boeing Internships and Job Opportunities
Boeing has now posted regional requisitions for Summer 2023 engineering internships, as well as entry-level roles starting Winter/Spring. These are “hub” requisitions, meaning that they will be used to generate a candidate pool from which organizations across the company can hire. These jobs and internships are regional and have differing application due dates.

NEW! Beaver Community Fair
Connect with the Beaver Community! The Beaver Community Fair draws together the OSU and greater Corvallis communities to celebrate the start of the academic year. Over two hundred different booths representing OSU departments & student organizations, Corvallis community agencies & businesses and local non-profit organizations are coming together to make visible the opportunity to connect with services, products and involvement opportunities on campus and around the area. Join us on Friday, September 30 from noon – 4 p.m. at the Memorial Union Quad & SEC Plaza.

HC Resources

These resources are available throughout the term.

  • The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. You can also get in touch with the main office by contacting honors.college@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541.737.6400. 
  • The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
    • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
    • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

NEW! HC Study Groups
Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. If you would like to participate in fall term HC study groups, please email bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu by Monday, October 3!

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

West & Sackett Drop-In Office Hours
Bailey Garvin and Courtney Lira, the Honors College Student Engagement Coordinators, will be hosting office hours throughout fall term. Stop by if you have any questions regarding the Honors College, HCSA, how to get involved or just need general advice and someone to talk to! Drop-in hours will start week 1 and will be posted in each Monday Message and on the HC office doors in West & Sackett.
