NEW! Denim Day
Join us on Wednesday, Apr. 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. outside of West Dining Hall to show support for sexual assault survivors by writing encouraging messages on denim. UPDATE! College of Business Student-Faculty Mixer POSTPONED
The College of Business mixer that was scheduled for Apr. 16 has been rescheduled for Friday, May 7 at 3 p.m.
Honors College mixers are an excellent way to connect with faculty members, learn more about their research and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Even if you don’t feel ready to begin research or are not sure about your interests, attending these events help you to explore opportunities and make connections. Dress in attire you are comfortable making a first impression with (even if over video conference). Be prepared to discuss your research interests and/or academic background in the breakout session after presentations. Registration link coming soon!
UPDATE! Register Now – Stage 1 Workshops are Going Away!
If you haven’t already checked it off your list, be sure to enroll in a Stage 1 workshop this term! Starting in fall 2021, Stage 1 will be a one-credit, ten-week course required for all incoming students. We won’t offer the one-hour Stage 1 workshops after spring 2021.
As a reminder, Stage 1 workshops allow you to complete the first stage of your honors thesis, which includes learning more about the possibilities and requirements for the honors thesis and creating your personal thesis map in a 45-minute workshop. Register to attend the Stage 1 workshop here. Remaining spring term Stage One workshops are:

THIS WEEK! Deadline for Honors College Center for the Humanities Summer Internships
The Honors College, the College of Liberal Arts, and the OSU Center for the Humanities invite applications for the 2021 Honors College Center for the Humanities Summer Internship Program. This is designed to support Honors College students working with College of Liberal Arts faculty members on projects that provide practical experience to students and further faculty research. Three intern/faculty pairs will be selected for the summer program, which runs from July 16 to August 31. Interns will receive $4,500 for wages and faculty will be able to access an additional $500.
Details about the program and the application process and requirements are available here. Applications are due by Friday, Apr. 23 and must be jointly submitted by students and faculty mentors. Honors College students of any major are eligible to apply, but faculty mentors must be affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts. THIS WEEK! Beyond Politics? A Conversation about the Role of the Judiciary in American Society
Members of the honors community are welcome to join a special conversation cosponsored by the Honors College and the OSU Center for the Humanities on the politicization of the American judicial system and its significance for our democracy this Thursday, April 22 from 5 to 6 p.m. PDT over Zoom. At this event, Honors College Board of Regents member Judge Mary Deits Rousseau, ’71, Center for the Humanities Director and Associate Professor of History Christopher McKnight Nichols, and two HC alumni, Shayna Rogers, ’10 and Andy Su, ’16, will lead a conversation and answer questions. NEXT WEEK! Honors College Dean and Friends Conversation: A Career in the Law
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends conversation on Tuesday, Apr. 27 from noon to 1:00 p.m. with HC grad Blake Robinson ’05 on becoming and working as an attorney. Blake received his honors degree in political science before earning a law degree at Willamette University in 2008. Since his graduation, he’s been a litigation attorney in Portland with Davis Wright Tremaine, a large national firm, where he primarily represents companies involved in civil lawsuits. At this Dean and Friends conversation, he’ll share advice on law school and law internships and discuss what it is like to work as an attorney, with examples drawn from his case experience. Scholarship Opportunities
OSU Emergency COVID-19 Funding For Students Through CRRSAA
Through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, OSU has emergency funding to award to currently enrolled OSU students. Apply here.
CRRSAA eligibility includes:
– Undergraduate, graduate and certificate seeking students enrolled at any of our campuses, including Ecampus.
– You must have a current FAFSA application on file.
– Students will be prioritized by their level of need based on their FAFSA application.
– Eligible expenses include all the components of a student’s cost of attendance or emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or child care.
– International students, DACA students, and undocumented students are not eligible for this funding.
Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student. Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.

NEW! 2021-2022 Environmental and Sustainability Program Coordinator Fellowship for Recent Grads – THIS WEEK
Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Applied Sustainability Experience are soliciting applications for the 2021-2022 Environmental and Sustainability Program Coordinator fellowship with The Tofurky Company. This nearly year-long opportunity is open to recent graduates. It offers hands-on experience in the research, design and implementation of an environmental management system and the beginnings of a sustainability program. NEW! Summer Internships with Flexport, Supply Chain Operations
Freight forwarding is the coordination and shipment of goods from one place to another and it’s what makes global trade possible. Flexport is on a mission to make global trade easier for everyone because we believe it can help connect the world and break down economic barriers.
Our Supply Chain Operations Team aims to help successfully execute our client’s shipping requirements and improve operational efficiency for the company by working together cross-functionally and collaborating with different departments. We are looking for highly motivated interns to support this team during the summer of 2021! This year, all roles will be virtual.
Interns will be assigned a manager and mentor dedicated to their success, an overview of Flexport air or ocean operations in the U.S., projects and assignments to help build knowledge and skills while making a direct impact on the business, an opportunity to collaborate with other teams to execute shipments for clients, visibility to Flexport leaders, opportunities to present work or projects and the chance to join team building activities to become familiar with their immediate team and other employees.
Interested students will need an ability to navigate through difficult operational problems and the drive to improve efficiency, a desire to work hard and the curiosity to learn, a data-centric, systems thinking mindset, the intellectual drive to become an expert on international trade in a matter of weeks and twelve weeks of full-time availability, starting in summer 2021. NEW! Free Workshop on Social Science and Humanities Programs for Prospective PhD Students – THIS WEEK
The University of California, Berkeley has created a series of workshops to walk students step-by-step through the admissions process, provide tips for developing high-caliber application materials and demystify how graduate funding works.
This free bootcamp series was developed specifically for underrepresented minority students considering graduate school, though it is open to all attendees. If you cannot attend all of the bootcamp events “live,” you can watch on-demand recordings, available 24 hours after the live event. Individuals that attend all four sessions will receive a certificate of completion. To apply, you will create an account within our system at the link here.
A discipline-specific workshop, “Applying to Social Science and Humanities Programs,” is this Thursday, Apr. 22 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Learn about what types of graduate programs are possible for students in your discipline, and undergraduate major. Meet faculty, experts, current graduate students, and alumni in the humanities and social sciences and hear their recommendations for successfully navigating the application process and succeeding in graduate school.

NEW! OHP and SNAP Virtual Sign-Up Events
SNAP helps make college expenses more affordable by providing up to $234/month to buy groceries. The funds are loaded into an Electronic Benefits Transfer card, which is like a debit card that can be used to purchase food at grocery stores, convenience stores and farmers markets. OHP is free comprehensive health coverage for Oregonians who meet income requirements and other criteria.
The HSRC and the Benton County Health Department will host a virtual OHP and SNAP enrollment event where OHP-certified community partners will assist you and your family with the enrollment processes. The event takes place from May 3-7, with two sessions held per day, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively. Registration is required, so please sign up here.
Students who are citizens or permanent residents may apply for OHP as SNAP as long as they meet income limits and other eligibility requirements are met. If you are undocumented or DACA, you may apply for Emergency OHP, but are not eligible for SNAP. If you have a child under age 18, they can be covered through OHP regardless of immigration status. Both OHA and SNAP are free, and while we encourage you to apply for both, you are not required to.

Campus-Wide Opportunities
NEW! Registration Open – 2021 OSU Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence
The Office of URSA is excited to announce that registration for OSU’s 2021 Celebrating Undergraduate Excellence student submissions is now open! CUE is an annual showcase for OSU undergraduates to present their research and creative projects to the OSU community. Undergraduates from all academic disciplines, in all years of study and all stages of research or creative work are invited to present.
CUE will take the form of a virtual symposium again this year. Each presenter will record a three-minute lightning talk about their work and post it on a central Canvas page where the symposium will be hosted. The Canvas page will be distributed to OSU community members who will be able to view presenters’ recordings, ask questions, and engage in dialogue via the Canvas discussion board function. We hope this event will bring our community closer during this time of social distancing.

NEW! Participate in a Mindfulness Research Study for Gift Cards
Learn mindfulness for science! The Mind Training Research Study, led by principle investigator Dr. John Edwards with the School of Psychological Science, is looking for volunteers to take a no cost, Zoom-based meditation program starting on Apr. 26. Participants will be asked to attend a 45-minute Zoom session at 8 a.m. or 7 p.m. PST, from Monday to Friday, for three weeks. They will also be asked to fill out approximately 20 minutes of online questionnaires at the start, finish and one month after the end of the Zoom sessions. A one-minute questionnaire will be given at the end of each session, as well.
Volunteers can choose to receive either a $20 Amazon gift card or 12 volunteer hours. Please direct any questions or concerns to socialcognition@oregonstate.edu.
