Grand Challenges Scholars Program – Honors College Info Session THIS WEEK!
The Grand Challenges Scholars Program is designed to prepare students to solve the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering. This program can help you stand out for jobs in the field, grad school and internships. In addition, it helps you enhance your perspective of engineering and develops your skills. Attend an information session to learn more about the program, components, how to apply and the benefits of joining! Students from all engineering majors and years are welcome. The final info session is this week, on Wednesday, January 27 at 11:00 a.m. with the Honors College. Sign up for the information session here. Now, it’s week 4 with music all around us. For this week’s activity, there are two options! Either you can join your conversation cluster to create a music playlist for mid-terms or you can show off your music knowledge with a game of ‘Name That Tune’. TODAY! Health Sciences Student-Faculty Mixer
Honors College Mixers are an excellent way to connect with faculty members, learn more about their research and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Even if you don’t yet feel ready to begin research or are unsure about your interests, attending these events help you explore opportunities and make connections.
Dress in attire you are comfortable making a first impression with (even if over video conference). Be prepared to discuss your research interests and/or academic background in the breakout session after presentations. All Mixers will be via Zoom, so make sure you’ve updated Zoom before the Mixer, as it allows you to choose and move among breakout rooms.

Honors College students – invite your family to the Honors College winter family event featuring a conversation with OSU President F. King Alexander. All family members of current HC students are welcome to attend. President Alexander will speak briefly and answer questions on Friday, February 5 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m., guests can learn more about the Honors College Parent and Family Leadership Circle. The PLC supports Honors College differential tuition scholarships and provides feedback about the HC family experience. Information Sessions for Anyone Interested in Joining the HC
If you know of a student who is currently exploring college admission options for fall 2021, encourage them to sign up for an HC information session!
Each week, the Honors College hosts ten virtual information sessions. Honors College Student Ambassadors connect with prospective students and families, sharing information about the Honors College and giving their own insights into student life at Oregon State. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, ambassadors host two information sessions delivering an overview of the college, its programs and the benefits of being a student. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, ambassadors host student panels! Several students are available to answer questions on topics like classes, majors, living on-campus and where to find the best food in Corvallis.

2021-2022 Honors College Continuing Student Scholarships Application
All continuing Honors College students who want to be considered for HC tuition scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year must complete an application to the Oregon State University Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship in OSU ScholarDollars here. This application opened on January 1, 2021, so it may not have been accessible if you were previously in the system. The deadline to apply is April 5, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Please contact Kevin Stoller at stollerk@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.
National and Global Scholarships Advising Office Support for Students
OSU’s National and Global Scholarships Advising supports undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni throughout the process of applying to select nationally-competitive scholarships and fellowships. In 2021, National and Global Scholarships Advising send out a monthly newsletter with information regarding upcoming scholarship deadlines, scholar profiles and tips for supporting the work of our office. The January newsletter is below and all other issues will be accessible on their website at this link.
Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student. Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.

Counseling and Psychological Services is looking for a passionate student to join their student outreach team to assist with outreach planning, programming and implementation of mental health programming for BIPOC – Black, Indigenous and People of Color – students including working at CAPS’ information tables at various events throughout the year. This recruitment will be used to fill 2 part-time Student Outreach positions, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.

NEXT WEEK! Deadline to Apply for 2021-2022 Academic Learning Assistant Position
Academic Learning Assistants are live-in, part-time (15-hour) student employees of Residential Education within the department of University Housing and Dining Services. They are responsible for providing academic support and faculty engagement opportunities in their assigned residential community. ALAs play an integral role in OSU’s First Year Experience program, supporting first year students in their adjustment to the academic culture and rigor of Oregon State University. They work an average of 15 hours per week.
ALAs work to cultivate strong academic habits and college knowledge, promote engagement with university resources and assist students in navigating the university landscape. These services range from 1-to-1 meetings with students to hall-wide programming initiatives. Compensation includes a furnished residence hall room on the OSU campus, a Student Staff Meal Plan for fall, winter, and spring term, and a $300 per term stipend. Community Engagement & Leadership and the Sustainability Office are excited to offer twenty OSU students an opportunity to attend the virtual 2021 Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference on Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12 by covering the full registration fee.
All OSU students are eligible to request registration funding for this social change leadership and professional development experience. Registration funding will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 20 students who complete the registration form here by Friday, February 5, 2021 and commit to attending.
Celebration of Women in Engineering
In recognition of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the College of Engineering at OSU invites students to celebrate the achievements of faculty and alumnae. This completely virtual event is free and open to the public.
On February 10, there will be a film premiere and panel for “Rooted in Community” from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., featuring live audience Q&A with the engineers featured in the film. In the film, six women share their experiences in engineering: how they broke through barriers, made impacts through research, and are guiding the next generation of engineers.
On February 11, there will be a career diversity panel with College of Engineering alumnae from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m., featuring live audience Q&A, allowing students to learn about some of the amazing career paths women have pursued with Oregon State Engineering degrees. Then, from 10:10 to 11:50 a.m. there will be a faculty panel discussing how they use teaching and research to advance progress with Grand Challenges for Engineering. Finally, from 12:10 to 1:00 p.m. the COE will host a live networking session and virtual display booths, allowing students to connect with other attendees, join discussion groups and explore virtual booths hosted by OSU Engineering student organizations.

Student Energy Analyst Position with OSU Energy Efficiency Center
The OSU Energy Efficiency Center is looking for motivated Student Energy Analysts to work part-time during the school year for 10 to 12 hours per week, and during the summer for 30 to 40 hours per week. The OSU EEC offers comprehensive on-site assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers across the Northwest and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. Visit the EEC website here for more information. NEW! Togetherall: A Virtual Community for Students, Focused on Mental Health and Wellbeing
CAPS has partnered with a company providing virtual peer-to-peer mental health and wellbeing support: Togetherall. Its online community is clinically moderated by mental health professionals, and offers students a safe and anonymous place to express their thoughts, concerns and triumphs. Students can draw strength and insights from peers that have real, lived experiences, and access a range of self-directed, clinically-validated tools to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. Togetherall integrates with OSU’s existing campus counseling services and after-hours emergency phone lines.

TOMORROW! Pandemic as Portal: Lecture with Drew Lanham on Coloring the Conservation Conversation
The Pandemic as Portal series is a nine-week lecture series featuring visionary thinkers from many perspectives — from writing, philosophy and history to architecture, music and filmmaking — as they explore their highest vision of environmental and social justice as the world reconfigures in the midst of the pandemic. This week, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 26, Erin Moore will speak on “Coloring the Conservation Conversation”.
J. Drew Lanham is the author of The Home Place: Memoirs of a Colored Man’s Love Affair with Nature, which received the Reed Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center and the Southern Book Prize, and was a finalist for the John Burroughs Medal. He is a birder, naturalist, and hunter-conservationist who has published essays and poetry in publications including Orion, Audubon, Flycatcher, and Wilderness, and in several anthologies. He is an Alumni Distinguished Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Master Teacher at Clemson University. Visit the link here to register for the lecture.

NEXT WEEK! Deadline for Music Technology and Production Album
The Music Technology and Production program at OSU produces an album during winter and spring terms. The MTP program is soliciting songwriters from around campus to send them a demo of an original song, which might be included in the album. Once they select the best tracks, each artist will be paired with students in the MTP program to produce the final project. This opportunity is open to all OSU students and participation from minorities and underrepresented groups is especially encouraged. The submission deadline is February 5. Our event is entirely virtual this year, and we have evolved our event to be delivered over the space of one week, from February 1-5, and you choose which date(s)/time(s) work best for you to participate!

At the end of the week, we will host a virtual networking event open to students, industry partners and alumni, with innovative new virtual tools to enhance your experience. NEW! Provost’s Lecture Featuring Mae C. Jemison – Exploring the Frontiers of Science and Human Potential NEXT WEEK
Join the Provost on Thursday, February 4 at 6:30 p.m. for a conversation with Dr. Mae C. Jemison: the first woman of color in space, national science literacy ambassador and advocate for racial leaps in knowledge, technology, design and thinking on Earth and beyond. This conversation is free and open to the public.
Currently, Dr. Jemison leads the 100 Year Starship, a bold, far reaching nonprofit initiative to ensure the capabilities exist for human travel beyond our solar system to another star within the next 100 years. Jemison is building a multi-faceted global community to foster the cultural, scientific, social and technical commitment and financial framework and support needed to accomplish the 100YSS vision. The 100YSS Way Research Institute seeks to generate the radical leaps that accelerate knowledge, technology, design, and thinking not just for space travel, but to enhance life on Earth. Jemison led the team that won the competitive, single awardee seed funding grant in February 2012 from premiere research agency DARPA.
Jemison started The Jemison Group, Inc. a technology consulting firm integrating critical socio-cultural issues into the design of engineering and science projects, such as satellite technology for health care delivery and solar dish Stirling engine electricity in developing countries. JG researches and develops stand-alone science and technology companies. An Environmental Studies professor at Dartmouth College, Jemison worked on sustainable development and technology design particularly for the developing world.

NEW! Provost’s Literary Prize – $500 and On-Campus Publication
This prize is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students at OSU! The literary work can be fiction, poetry or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. Submissions must be the student’s original work, typed no longer than 14 double-spaced pages for prose or 8 manuscript pages for poetry. On the first page, students must include their full name, year in school, preferred email address, current mailing address, phone number and student ID number.
The deadline for submission is midnight on Tuesday, February 16. Email your submission as an attachment – Word or PDF – to the Provost’s Literary Prize Screening Committee via Professor Scribner in the School of Writing, Literature and Film at keith.scribner@oregonstate.edu. Your subject line should be either “Provost’s Literary Prize—Poetry” or “Provost’s Literary Prize—Prose.”
The Provost will announce the winner in May, and the winner will receive a $500 award in addition to having their writing published on campus. Any questions can be directed to Professor Scribner by email.
NEW! OSU Takes Part in Tournées Film Festival!
The Tournées Film Festival is a Francophone festival which seeks to bring French cinema to American university students. And this year, OSU gets to take part! We will be showing six Francophone films over the course of Winter and Spring term, the first one being this week on Thursday, January 28 at 6:00 p.m. with “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”.
The films are free and are available to any student who wishes to see them, and we want to make sure that everyone knows they are welcome to attend. There will also be a short 30 minute discussion about the films after our viewing, which will be moderated by professors in the French and Anthropology departments. The Honors College is back with a “Forgot your lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money, or simply need a snack – please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serving and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.
