Honors College Mixers are an excellent way to connect with faculty members, learn more about their research and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Even if you don’t yet feel ready to begin research or are unsure about your interests, attending these events help you explore opportunities and make connections.
Dress in attire you are comfortable making a first impression with (even if over video conference). Be prepared to discuss your research interests and/or academic background in the breakout session after presentations. All Mixers will be via Zoom, so make sure you’ve updated Zoom before the Mixer, as it allows you to choose and move among breakout rooms.

NEW! HC Dean and Friends Conversation with the President of Dell Technologies Services, Doug Schmitt
All Honors College students are invited to a special Dean and Friends conversation with Doug Schmitt, the president of Dell Technologies Services, this Wednesday, January 20 from noon to 1:00 p.m.
Doug graduated from the OSU College of Business in finance in 1989, and he has an accounting degree from Portland State University and an MBA from the University of Portland. Before joining Dell Technologies in 1997, he worked in various leadership roles at Sequent Computer Systems and in the banking sector. As president of Dell Technologies Services, he is responsible for the company’s consulting, deployment, support, managed services and education services businesses, which are comprised of 60,000 direct and partner personnel working in more than 170 countries. He also serves on the board of Dell Technologies Political Action Committee and the executive board of the Technology Services Industry Association.
At this Dean and Friends, Doug will discuss his background, from growing up on a farm to leading a multi-billion dollar organization at a tech company, share thoughts on taking control of your career and leadership and answer questions. Each week, the Honors College hosts ten virtual information sessions. Honors College Student Ambassadors connect with prospective students and families, sharing information about the Honors College and giving their own insights into student life at Oregon State. On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, ambassadors host two information sessions delivering an overview of the college, its programs and the benefits of being a student. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, ambassadors host student panels! Several students are available to answer questions on topics like classes, majors, living on-campus and where to find the best food in Corvallis.

2021-2022 Honors College Continuing Student Scholarships Application
All continuing Honors College students who want to be considered for HC tuition scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year must complete an application to the Oregon State University Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship in OSU ScholarDollars here. This application opened on January 1, 2021, so it may not have been accessible if you were previously in the system. The deadline to apply is April 5, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Please contact Kevin Stoller at stollerk@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.
National and Global Scholarships Advising Office Support for Students
OSU’s National and Global Scholarships Advising supports undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni throughout the process of applying to select nationally-competitive scholarships and fellowships. In 2021, National and Global Scholarships Advising send out a monthly newsletter with information regarding upcoming scholarship deadlines, scholar profiles and tips for supporting the work of our office. The January newsletter is below and all other issues will be accessible on their website at this link.
Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student. Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.

The Grand Challenges Scholars Program is designed to prepare students to solve the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering. This program can help you stand out for jobs in the field, grad school and internships. In addition, it helps you enhance your perspective of engineering and develops your skills. NEW! CAPS Outreach Student Assistant Position – BIPOC Focus
Counseling and Psychological Services is looking for a passionate student to join their student outreach team to assist with outreach planning, programming and implementation of mental health programming for BIPOC – Black, Indigenous and People of Color – students including working at CAPS’ information tables at various events throughout the year. This recruitment will be used to fill 2 part-time Student Outreach positions, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.

NEW! Student Energy Analyst Position with OSU Energy Efficiency Center
The OSU Energy Efficiency Center is looking for motivated Student Energy Analysts to work part-time during the school year for 10 to 12 hours per week, and during the summer for 30 to 40 hours per week. The OSU EEC offers comprehensive on-site assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers across the Northwest and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. These engineering analyses and improvement recommendations are compiled into a report and delivered to the client. Visit the EEC website here for more information. NEW! Celebration of Women in Engineering
In recognition of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the College of Engineering at OSU invites students to celebrate the achievements of faculty and alumnae. This completely virtual event is free and open to the public.
On February 10, there will be a film premiere and panel for “Rooted in Community” from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., featuring live audience Q&A with the engineers featured in the film. In the film, six women share their experiences in engineering: how they broke through barriers, made impacts through research, and are guiding the next generation of engineers.
On February 11, there will be a career diversity panel with College of Engineering alumnae from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m., featuring live audience Q&A, allowing students to learn about some of the amazing career paths women have pursued with Oregon State Engineering degrees. Then, from 10:10 to 11:50 a.m. there will be a faculty panel discussing how they use teaching and research to advance progress with Grand Challenges for Engineering. Finally, from 12:10 to 1:00 p.m. the COE will host a live networking session and virtual display booths, allowing students to connect with other attendees, join discussion groups and explore virtual booths hosted by OSU Engineering student organizations.

Apply to Work for Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center is currently hiring student coaches and strategists. The ASC is a great place for students to work. They will receive training and professional development applicable to a range of careers and the ASC is supportive of each student’s schedule. For these positions, training takes place during spring term, and the expectation is that students continue in the role next year as well.

Apply to be an Academic Learning Assistant for 2021-2022 Year
Academic Learning Assistants are live-in, part-time (15-hour) student employees of Residential Education within the department of University Housing and Dining Services. They are responsible for providing academic support and faculty engagement opportunities in their assigned residential community. ALAs play an integral role in OSU’s First Year Experience program, supporting first year students in their adjustment to the academic culture and rigor of Oregon State University. They work an average of 15 hours per week.
ALAs work to cultivate strong academic habits and college knowledge, promote engagement with university resources, and assist students in navigating the university landscape. These services range from 1-to-1 meetings with students to hall-wide programming initiative.
Compensation includes a furnished residence hall room on the OSU campus, a Student Staff Meal Plan for fall, winter, and spring term, and a $300 per term stipend. Apply here by February 5 to be considered.
Funding Available for Students to Attend Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference
Community Engagement & Leadership and the Sustainability Office are excited to offer twenty OSU students an opportunity to attend the virtual 2021 Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference on Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12 by covering the full registration fee.
All OSU students are eligible to request registration funding for this social change leadership and professional development experience. Registration funding will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 20 students who complete the registration form here by Friday, February 5, 2021 and commit to attending.

NEW! Togetherall: A Virtual Community for Students, Focused on Mental Health and Wellbeing
CAPS has partnered with a company providing virtual peer-to-peer mental health and wellbeing support: Togetherall. Its online community is clinically moderated by mental health professionals, and offers students a safe and anonymous place to express their thoughts, concerns and triumphs. Students can draw strength and insights from peers that have real, lived experiences, and access a range of self-directed, clinically-validated tools to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. Togetherall integrates with OSU’s existing campus counseling services and after-hours emergency phone lines.

TOMORROW! Pandemic as Portal: Lecture with Erin Moore on Design and Resistance
The Pandemic as Portal series is a nine-week lecture series featuring visionary thinkers from many perspectives — from writing, philosophy and history to architecture, music and filmmaking — as they explore their highest vision of environmental and social justice as the world reconfigures in the midst of the pandemic.
This week, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, Erin Moore will speak on “Design and Resistance: Pipeline Portals” and share her Pipeline Portals project; three installations along proposed routes of the Pacific Connector Pipeline that are meant to directly resist its construction. Moore is an architect who uses her design research practice to explore and advance thought on ideas of nature in architectural design. She works with explicit intentions for material, ecological and multi-species life cycles. Her recent work addresses the architectural space of fossil fuel consumption, biogenic carbon sequestration and climate change. Moore is an Associate Professor in the Department of Architecture and Environmental Studies Program, and Director of the School of Architecture and Environment at the University of Oregon.

NEW! Music Technology and Production Album Call for 2021
The Music Technology and Production program at OSU produces an album during winter and spring terms. The MTP program is soliciting songwriters from around campus to send them a demo of an original song, which might be included in the album. Once they select the best tracks, each artist will be paired with students in the MTP program to produce the final project. This opportunity is open to all OSU students and participation from minorities and underrepresented groups is especially encouraged. The submission deadline is February 5. This event (formerly known as “Suit Camp”) is open to ALL engineering students, and is an amazing opportunity for students to practice important interview and networking skills with the support of engineering alumni and industry partners. Our event is entirely virtual this year, and we have evolved our event to be delivered over the space of one week, from February 1-5, and you choose which date(s)/time(s) work best for you to participate!
First, we will pair you with industry and alumni for practice mock interviews. At the end of the week, we will host a virtual networking event open to students, industry partners and alumni, with innovative new virtual tools to enhance your experience. The Honors College is back with a “Forgot your lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. The resource is self-serving and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

NEW! Honors Summer Study Abroad Opportunity in Argentina
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is offering an exciting Honors study abroad program this summer at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. The program is open to all current university-level students – there is no need to apply to UHM to participate – and offers the opportunity to earn up to 9 credits; 6 in Spanish language credits, from beginner to advanced levels, and 3 in Honors credits through the optional course HON 333 Experiential and Scholarly Engagement.
This program runs from May 19 to June 30 and its cost begins at $5,000. The program includes a room with an Argentinian host family, an overnight trip to the Uspallata Valley and the tallest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, trips to wineries and museums, and a “Gauchos/Empanadas” day in the country. The program also shares pre-departure and orientation programs to help students prepare, as well as detailed information on COVID-19 procedures and response plans.
