NEW! Postcard Project with HCSA
Join us as we partner with the Valley Library in creating postcards to campus that will be displayed in the library’s rotunda! We will be meeting via Zoom on Wednesday, January 13 at 4:00 p.m. to hang out and personalize digital or paper postcards together with art, writings, or other sentiments special to you. Paper postcards will be available at the SLUG front desk for pick up starting on Monday, January 11. If you are interested in attending please RSVP here.

Looking for an opportunity to meet other students and get involved with the HC? NEW! A 2020 Trivia Challenge While Setting Up Winter Conversation Clusters
We still have plenty of dinners to give away, so please reach out to your new conversation cluster to establish your meeting day, time and mode and earn your reward!
Need assistance? The HC will be hosting Zoom rooms for groups to meet, from January 11-13 between 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. If you would like to utilize this resource please email LeeAnn.Baker@oregonstate.edu with the day and time you would like to meet.
With many groups still working on communicating with their group and establishing meeting times, we offer an optional activity this week for clusters that are able to meet: the 2020 Trivia Challenge! This challenge will test your knowledge of the highlights from 2020, with the top 10 students earn gift cards to the OSU Beavers store. Check it out in this week’s module on Canvas.
We ask that you be the very best version of yourself by giving what you can to your group. Please recognize that for some, these meetings are critical to their well-being and are important to creating a sense of belonging and community.

Complete the first stage of your Honors Thesis! Learn more about the possibilities and requirements for the Honors Thesis and create your personal Thesis Map in a 45-minute workshop. Winter term Stage One workshops are:

NEW! Winter Term Student-Faculty Mixers Coming Soon
Honors College Mixers are an excellent way to connect with faculty members, learn more about their research, and potentially get involved in projects that could be the basis of an HC thesis. Even if you don’t yet feel ready to begin research or are unsure about your interests, attending these events help you explore opportunities and make connections.
Dress in attire you are comfortable making a first impression with (even if over video conference). Be prepared to discuss your research interests and/or academic background in the breakout session after presentations. All Mixers will be via Zoom, so make sure you’ve updated Zoom before the Mixer, as it allows you to choose and move among breakout rooms.

Forgot Your Lunch Program – Back and Improved!

NEW! 2021-2022 Honors College Continuing Student Scholarships Application
All continuing Honors College students who want to be considered for HC tuition scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year must complete an application to the Oregon State University Honors College Differential Tuition Scholarship in OSU ScholarDollars here. This application opened on January 1, 2021, so it may not have been accessible if you were previously in the system. The deadline to apply is April 5, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. Please contact Kevin Stoller at stollerk@oregonstate.edu if you have any questions.
NEW! National and Global Scholarships Advising Office Support for Students
OSU’s National and Global Scholarships Advising supports undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni throughout the process of applying to select nationally-competitive scholarships and fellowships. In 2021, National and Global Scholarships Advising send out a monthly newsletter with information regarding upcoming scholarship deadlines, scholar profiles and tips for supporting the work of our office. The January newsletter is below and all other issues will be accessible on their website at this link.
Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.
Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student. Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.
Professional Development and Job Opportunities
THIS WEEK! Apply to be a START Leader for Summer 2021
The START Leader application is now open for admissions, recruiting students for summer 2021. START Leaders serve as an expert orientation resource for incoming students and their families, as well as campus partners and officials. They act as a role model and mentor for new students and facilitate small group sessions of new students. START Leaders also share their own OSU story to build student connection to the university, communicate with students about their transition to OSU and host social events for new students.

NEW! Apply to Work for Academic Success Center
The Academic Success Center is currently hiring student coaches and strategists. The ASC is a great place for students to work. They will receive training and professional development applicable to a range of careers and the ASC is supportive of each student’s schedule. For these positions, training takes place during spring term, and the expectation is that students continue in the role next year as well.

NEW! Apply to be an Academic Learning Assistant for 2021-2022 Year
Academic Learning Assistants are live-in, part-time (15-hour) student employees of Residential Education within the department of University Housing and Dining Services. They are responsible for providing academic support and faculty engagement opportunities in their assigned residential community. ALAs play an integral role in OSU’s First Year Experience program, supporting first year students in their adjustment to the academic culture and rigor of Oregon State University. They work an average of 15 hours per week.
ALAs work to cultivate strong academic habits and college knowledge, promote engagement with university resources, and assist students in navigating the university landscape. These services range from 1-to-1 meetings with students to hall-wide programming initiative.
Compensation includes a furnished residence hall room on the OSU campus, a Student Staff Meal Plan for fall, winter, and spring term, and a $300 per term stipend. Apply here by February 5 to be considered.
NEW! Funding Available for Students to Attend Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference
Community Engagement & Leadership and the Sustainability Office are excited to offer twenty OSU students an opportunity to attend the virtual 2021 Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference on Thursday, February 11 and Friday, February 12 by covering the full registration fee.
All OSU students are eligible to request registration funding for this social change leadership and professional development experience. Registration funding will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 20 students who complete the registration form here by Friday, February 5, 2021 and commit to attending.

NEW! Beavers SAVE Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention
Learn how to reach out and help a friend. Suicide is one of the most preventable causes of death, and this workshop will provide the skills you need to effectively help or intervene with a friend or family member who is considering suicide. TODAY! OSU Album Club is Back with “Rumours”
Join host Bob Santelli in a virtual version of the OSU Album Club on January 11 at 7:00 p.m. The OSU Album Club is similar to a book club, allowing students to listen to and discuss some of the greatest albums ever recorded. It is also free and open to everyone! Host Bob Santelli is the OSU Director of Popular Music and Performing Arts, former exec director of the Grammy Museum in LA, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, and the Experience Music Project (now Museum of Pop Culture) in Seattle. TOMORROW! Pandemic as Portal: Creating a Just Future on Earth – First Lecture with Kim Stanley Robinson
Join us for a weekly lecture series from January 12 to March 9 featuring visionary thinkers from many perspectives — from writing, philosophy and history to architecture, music and filmmaking — as they explore their highest vision of environmental and social justice as the world reconfigures in the midst of the pandemic.
This week, at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 12, Kim Stanley Robinson will speak on “Some Lessons from the Pandemic for Dealing with Climate Change”. Robinson is a science-fiction writer and a New York Times best selling author who has written more than 20 books, which often explore ecological themes. THIS WEEK! Service Project – Mapping Prejudice with Community Engagement & Leadership
Learn about how racial covenants were used to prevent people of color from buying property and building wealth for most of the last century. During the Mapping Prejudice project, volunteers will be trained on how to add information from property deeds to a digital, interactive map. The College of Engineering Leadership Academy is excited to announce its annual winter term event, Grow to Pro! This event (formerly known as “Suit Camp”) is open to ALL engineering students, and is an amazing opportunity for students to practice important interview and networking skills with the support of engineering alumni and industry partners. Our event is entirely virtual this year, and we have evolved our event to be delivered over the space of one week, from February 1-5, and you choose which date(s)/time(s) work best for you to participate!
First, we will pair you with industry and alumni for practice mock interviews. At the end of the week, we will host a virtual networking event open to students, industry partners and alumni, with innovative new virtual tools to enhance your experience. The Honors College is back with a “Forgot your lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money, or simply need a snack – please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serving and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

NEW! Honors Summer Study Abroad Opportunity in Argentina
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is offering an exciting Honors study abroad program this summer at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Mendoza, Argentina. The program is open to all current university-level students – there is no need to apply to UHM to participate – and offers the opportunity to earn up to 9 credits; 6 in Spanish language credits, from beginner to advanced levels, and 3 in Honors credits through the optional course HON 333 Experiential and Scholarly Engagement.
This program runs from May 19 to June 30 and its cost begins at $5,000. The program includes a room with an Argentinian host family, an overnight trip to the Uspallata Valley and the tallest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, trips to wineries and museums, and a “Gauchos/Empanadas” day in the country. The program also shares pre-departure and orientation programs to help students prepare, as well as detailed information on COVID-19 procedures and response plans.
