Important Travel Guidance and COIVD-19 Reminders

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, OSU has communicated the following guidance to students.

Please comply with Gov. Kate Brown’s Two-Week Statewide Freeze order issued Nov. 13. Oregon State Police will work with local law enforcement to enforce orders that include restricting gatherings to six people from no more than two households. OSU expects all employees and students to follow all freeze requirements and OSU’s Physical Distancing Policy.

A negative test result does not confirm a student does not have the virus and is not infectious. We must continue observing public health measures and monitor our own wellness. If you become infected or are exposed to a person who is infected, you must isolate or quarantine before traveling. The Oregon Health Authority’s website offers more information on isolation and quarantine guidelines.

We encourage all students to obtain a flu shot. OSU Corvallis students can obtain a flu shot at Student Health Services. Call 541-737-9355 to schedule an appointment.

We advise students to plan carefully and limit holiday travel. Please limit travel between communities to avoid exposing yourself and others to COVID-19. The states of Oregon, California and Washington have issued travel advisories, recommending 14-day quarantines for interstate and international travel and asking residents to remain local and not travel across borders. Additionally, the OHA encourages college students, where possible and practical, to remain in the communities where they are currently living. If you test negative for COVID-19 and plan to travel home or visit another location during the Thanksgiving holiday, consider staying there for the remainder of the term and through winter break.

OSU will operate as fully remote for the remainder of fall term. Face-to-face teaching on the Corvallis campus will end on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020. Week 10 classes and fall term final exams and activities will be delivered remotely. Students are not required to return to OSU’s Corvallis campus after the Thanksgiving break for the remainder of fall term. On-campus housing and dining services in both Corvallis and Bend will remain available.

Sign up for the Oregon Exposure Notification Pilot. Help OSU deploy new technology to alert community members when they have been exposed to someone confirmed to have COVID-19. If you receive an exposure notification, you will have the opportunity to receive a COVID-19 test through TRACE-OSU. Details about the technology, pilot and how to participate are available here.

NEW! HC Winter Book Clubs – Sign-Up Now
An Honors College winter tradition is back! Sign-ups are now open for the HC’s Winter Break Faculty/Student Book Clubs! Each year, we invite a handful of university leaders, faculty, and friends to select a book to share with a small group of Honors College students. Group members each get a free copy of their group’s book to read over the break, and groups meet (over Zoom this year) with their leader to discuss the book at the beginning of winter term.

This is a fantastic way to meet some interesting members of the Oregon State community as well as connect with fellow HC students in a stimulating and informal setting – plus, you get a great book to read over the break! Groups are capped and can fill up fast, so don’t delay in registering. Sign up here by Sunday, Dec. 6 (don’t forget to hit submit!), and direct questions to Judy David at judy.david@oregonstate.edu.

Students who sign-up first have priority in group assignments, so don’t delay registering here, and be sure to sign up by December 6!

Apply for the Delta Scholars Program to Work for Social Change
The Delta Scholars Program is an academic and community engagement program for talented and socially conscious college students. Delta Scholars are selected for their academic achievements and commitment to public service to participate in a ten-day Summer Institute in Mississippi followed by a five-day trip to Boston and Harvard University in the fall. Both experiences will help young leaders think critically about systemic injustices in the Mississippi Delta, and each Scholar will develop a project that will produce positive social change in their communities.

This is a nationally competitive program aimed at all sophomore students, with preference given to those who are from or attending school in the Mississippi Delta Region. Applications for the 2021 Summer Institute are due February 1, 2021. Questions can be directed to Dr. Christopher Snyder, Dean of the Shackouls Honors College at 666-325-2522 or csynder@honors.msstate.edu.

Honors Experience Scholarship
Honors College undergraduates in need of financial support for experiential learning opportunities that advance their educational goals and support completion of their honors degree can apply for an Honors Experience Scholarship. Eligible experiences include, but are not necessarily limited to, Oregon State University-authorized study abroad or internship opportunities, professional or research-related travel, service learning, course fees for experiential course opportunities and thesis research. Unanticipated expenses related to your ability to engage in experiential learning during the current pandemic are eligible for consideration.

Submit an Honors Experiential Award Application by 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 4, 2020 for consideration for winter term. Contact Leanna Dillon at leanna.dillon@oregonstate.edu with any questions.

Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that this may be a particularly challenging time for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant. Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate.

Inability to pay Honors College differential tuition or other costs this term should not be the primary barrier to any student’s successful graduation from the college or continuation as an honors student.
Approved grants may be for the full HC differential tuition (currently $500) or a portion of it and are for one-term only. Grants will not be renewed for additional terms, but students can reapply. Typically, students can only receive two Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant during their time in the Honors College. See the application for additional information.
