A Message from Dean Doolen
As some of you may know, HC associate dean, Tara Williams, has accepted a position as the dean of the Honors College at the University of Alabama. Our colleagues at the University of Alabama are fortunate to have someone with her strong leadership skills to move their college forward. However, she will be missed here—after serving nearly seven years as the HC associate dean. Her contributions to the Honors College and OSU are numerous. This role offers her an exciting professional opportunity to lead a large honors college while also moving closer to family.
I am pleased to share that Professor Susan Jackson Rodgers, a professor in the School of Writing, Literature and Film, has been named interim associate dean of the Oregon State University Honors College (HC). She will replace Tara effective February 1, 2020. You can find more information here. While Tara leaves an extraordinary legacy of accomplishments, I am excited to have such an outstanding member of the OSU community fill this critical role until we launch a search for a permanent replacement next fall.

Need Access to West or Sackett Hall?
All Honors College students can access the West Hall main lounge, and Sackett Hall lounge and conference spaces on the east side of the building. If you live on-campus your OSU student ID has been programmed to allow you access into the Sackett F or E door (those main entrances on the east side of the building near wings F/G and E/H) and the main entrances to West Hall (both the east and west doors). Just place your ID up to the black proxy scanner and the door will unlock. If for some reason your ID is not coded properly request access by completing the survey at https://oregonstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bmcLh4dwiae87YN
Access to West and Sackett common spaces is available Sunday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday & Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. These spaces are wonderful if you are looking for a place to meet with your study group, or find a quiet place to spread out. Use the space frequently as access expires if not used within 3 weeks. As a reminder, HC study groups and HC academic advising drop-in hours are also available in these spaces.
New! Dean and Friends Coffee on the Art of Storytelling – 1/22/20
All Honors College students are invited to a special Dean and Friends Coffee on the art of storytelling next Wednesday, January 22nd from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in LInC 360. Joining us will be Lezli Goheen, a 1993 graduate from OSU in business administration. Lezli currently works in employee communications at Portland General Electric, and she previously spent 12 years on the Microsoft account at WE Communications, an agency helping innovative brands share their purpose. At this coffee, she will lead a conversation about what makes a story authentic, interesting, and memorable. The group will talk about the key elements of stories and how to create stories that people will remember, whether personally or for a brand. This coffee – with treats provided – is open to all HC students, but space is limited. Reserve your spot by emailing stollerk@oregonstate.edu.
HCSA Student-Faculty Trivia Night – Register ASAP!
Come out and for a friendly trivia competition against fellow Honors College faculty and students on Wednesday, January 22 in Sackett F/G Lounge from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.! More TheSIS Stage 1: Plan Workshops added! The first stage in the Thesis Success in Stages (TheSIS) process, Plan, provides an introduction to the thesis requirements and an outline of thesis resources for students. Each student must attend a Stage 1 workshop to successfully complete Stage 1. There will be three more Stage 1 workshops this term:

NEW! Dean and Friends Lunch on Paths from Engineering to Medicine – 1/29/20
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends Lunch on Wednesday, January 29th at noon in MU 221 exploring two paths from engineering degrees to medical careers. Joining us will be Bory Kea and Brandon Togioka, who both graduated from the OSU Honors College in bioengineering in 2003. Bory went on to the Stanford University School of Medicine, and she is now a faculty member and director of clinical trials in the Oregon Health and Science University in the department of emergency medicine, following residency at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and completion of a masters in clinical research at OHSU. Brandon attended medical school and completed his residency at the Johns Hopkins University, and, after beginning his academic career as an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins, he joined the faculty at OHSU, where is an associate professor and the director of clinical research in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. They will discuss their paths from research to medicine, how they balance their lives and interests, and other elements of their careers. Attention second-year undergraduates, mentors, and advisors! The NOAA Office of Education is accepting applications for two scholarship opportunities for second-year undergraduates. The NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship and NOAA Educational Partnership with Minority Serving Institutions (EPP/MSI) Scholarship are now open to apply through January 31, 2020. These generous scholarships award students with academic assistance ($9,500 per year in junior and senior year) and a 10-week, full-time paid summer internship at any NOAA facility nationwide, with travel expenses included. Students accepted into the EPP/MSI scholarship will be awarded two 10-week, full-time paid summer internships. All scholars also receive support to present their research at up to two national conferences. Apply here.

TOUR Ambassador application open!
The Office of Admissions is seeking qualified, currently enrolled undergraduates to serve as paid TOUR Ambassadors for the 2020-2021 school year. OSU TOUR Ambassadors and Diversity TOUR Ambassadors conduct campus and housing tours, represent OSU during recruiting events & open houses, and have weekly hours working in the Welcome Center. Successful candidates enjoy working with people, have a wide range of OSU experiences, and a willingness to share these experiences with prospective students and their families. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
Application Now Available: Honors College Representative at the Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program (MCORRP)
Through a generous gift by Dr. Kim Eagle, the Honors College is pleased to offer a paid internship with the Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program (MCORRP). This summer internship program is a 10-week opportunity, starting in the first week of June and concluding in the first week of August, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. The intern participating in the program will join a diverse group of students from various schools across the country, work on a research project and experience medicine first hand: http://www.med.umich.edu/mcorrp/about-us/internship.html.

The internship includes a stipend, as well as a housing and travel allowance. NEW! Volunteer opportunity with the East Linn Community Clinic
Community Outreach is looking for students who have experience as medical assistants, nursing assistants, or scribes and are interested in volunteering at the East Linn Community Clinic (ELCC). This clinic is held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 pm to 8 pm in Lebanon and provides free medical assistance to low-income, medically uninsured patients.
At ELCC, you will be able to serve patients in a rural community by taking their vitals, acquiring their history of present illness, and presenting your findings to an attending physician. Our clinic works alongside Western University of Health Sciences School of Osteopathic Medicine, so it is a great place to meet physicians and learn from medical students.

Safeguard Youth Nonprofit Leadership Opportunity
We are a 501(c)(3) youth-led nonprofit whose mission is to advocate and defend a higher quality of child welfare in the state of Oregon. Our current system is riddled with problems and high leadership overturn that has led to the systematic abuse of children. Founded by a fellow Oregon State Honors student, we are any individuals interested in executing public information campaigns, organizing events to raise awareness and participating in legislative lobbying for child welfare reform. The Honors College has launched a “Forgot your lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money, or simply need a snack – please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serving and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.
