THIS WEEK! Kung Fu Panda 4 Movie Night
HCSA is hosting a movie night on Wednesday, May 8th at 6:00 p.m. in Austin Hall Room 183. There will be concessions, raffles, balloon animals, and Xander the therapy dog. All proceeds will go towards the ABC House, which is a local children’s advocacy organization.
NEW! Studio Ghibli Movie and Tote Bag Painting Night
Midterms stressful? Want a way to relax? Come join us on Saturday, May 11th to watch the Studio Ghibli film Ponyo and paint a tote bag in LInC rooms 343 and 345 from 3-6 p.m.! Snacks and drinks will be provided, but keep in mind supplies to decorate a tote bag are limited.

Calling all artists! Join the HCSA on Tuesday, May 14th from 5 – 7 p.m. in LInC 343 and 345 for an evening of Bob Ross painting! Meet new friends and paint along to a spring themed Bob Ross episode. Refreshments and supplies will be provided – though, if you have your own painting supplies, feel free to bring them!

THIS WEEK! Dean and Friends Lunch – Turning Poetry into Food, with Hiram Larew
All Honors College students are invited to a Dean and Friends Lunch Conversation with Hiram Larew, Ph.D., on “Turning Poetry into Food” on Friday, May 10th from 12-12:50 p.m. in LInC 345 and over Zoom. Hiram will discuss how poetry serves as a catalyst for addressing global hunger and food insecurity, highlighting the Poetry X Hunger initiative and his efforts to mobilize poets worldwide for social change. Lunch will be provided to in-person attendees. RSVP to kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu to reserve your spot. Hiram Larew earned his M.S. in botany and plant pathology and his Ph.D. in entomology from Oregon State University. Until his retirement in 2015, he led transformative programs at the USDA National Institute for Food and Agriculture, and his career spans scientific research, policy development and management, with notable contributions to global agriculture. Additionally, Larew is a poet and advocate, with his fifth collection published in 2021. His Poetry X Hunger initiative is bringing poets rom around the world to the anti-hunger cause. NEW! Nominate an HC faculty for the Honors College Eminent Mentor award!
The Honors College invites all Honors College students and recent alumni to nominate a faculty member for the annual Margaret and Thomas Meehan Eminent Mentor award. The Honors College Eminent Mentor award recognizes a faculty member for their outstanding support of honors undergraduate research throughout their careers and entails a $2,000 prize. Thesis Fair
Come see what research HC students have conducted on Friday, May 17th. From 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m at LInC 368: Join HC students presenting their research in lightning talk format. Each student will talk 3-5 minutes and there will be time for questions after presentations. Come see the variety of research our HC students are participating in person on Corvallis campus or virtually. From 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at 3rd Floor LInC Hallways: Join a select group of HC students as they present their research poster. Learn about the exciting topics HC student have been researching!
ONGOING! Drop-in Thesis Support
Starting in week 4, we’re excited to offer drop-in thesis hours in LInC 450. Hosted by Dewi Roberts, the Advising Coordinator for the HC, they’ll run Monday through Friday between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Whether you’re grappling with formatting challenges for your pre-text pages, have questions about the external communication requirement, would like to schedule your thesis, or encounter any other thesis-related issues, this is your opportunity to seek assistance.
ONGOING! Honors Graduation Regalia Donations
The Honors College encourages recent graduates to donate their HC Graduation Regalia to our office so that they can be borrowed for future students in an effort to be more sustainable and save students the investment. If recent graduates still have their Honors College stole/tam and want to donate them for future HC grads, they can drop them off at the office Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., or they can mail them to the Honors College Office. Marine Studies Initiative Coastal Housing Award Opportunities
Because of generous donor support, Coastal Housing Awards are now available for students who are seeking field housing at the coast and in need of financial assistance. These awards are for students studying at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Summer 2024. MSI Student Coastal Housing Awards will be up to $400 per award. Multiple awards are available. HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.
HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

NEW! Apply to the Justice Challenge
Interested in addressing climate change? Check out the Justice Challenge! Join honors students from universities across the United States in exploring the complex issues around food justice in the 2024-2025 academic year. Collaborating with experts from a variety of fields, you will engage with others to address real social needs and develop your capacity for civic engagement, innovation, and leadership. The program is open to a limited number of participants. Each student will enroll in an a nine-week online colloquium, and a 1-day concluding online conference. In addition, each student will participate in at least one of three signature experiences: a Design Challenge (semester-long course, in-person); a Hackathon (2-day, in person or online); or a Field Course (1 week, in-person). Students may nominate themselves or be nominated by a representative of their Honors college or program. Students who self-nominate should ask a current or former professor to complete this reference form by Wednesday, May 15. Beaver Connect Peer Mentor Positions
Beaver Connect is looking for Peer Mentors for 2024-2025 mentoring teams at the Corvallis campus! This program matches you with a faculty member to co-mentor a group of 3-4 new-to-OSU students. Together, you’ll lead crucial discussions on navigating college, achieving success, and getting more out of the OSU experience. This is a paid position that will allow you to make connections with faculty and peers and develop resume-building leadership skills! OSU Energy Efficiency Center is Hiring
Would you be interested in an on-campus job working with industry clients to reduce energy use and improve productivity, while applying what you are learning in your classes? The OSU Energy Efficiency Center (EEC) is looking for motivated student energy analysts to work part-time during the school year (10-20 hrs/week) and during the summer (~40 hrs/week). The OSU EEC offers comprehensive, student-led, on-site energy and productivity assessments to small and medium-sized manufacturers through a US Department of Energy funded program. Student teams advised by engineering faculty visit manufacturers and seek ways to increase their productivity and reduce energy use and waste. Learn more about the OSU Energy Efficiency Center here. THIS WEEK! Holocaust Memorial Week
May 6-10th marks the 37th annual observance of Holocaust Memorial Week at Oregon State University. The centerpiece of this year’s program is a public talk by Eva Aigner, a local Holocaust survivor who, as a child, was confined to the Budapest ghetto and narrowly avoided execution. Eva will speak on Wednesday, May 8 at 7 p.m. Please visit the OSU Holocaust Memorial Program events page for full details, speaker bios, list of sponsors, registration links, and information about each event’s modality. Due to the generosity of our donors, all events are free and open to everyone, but advanced registration is required for some events.
Summer Course Highlight – DSI 415
DSI 415 – Multidisciplinary Design for Social Impact is a 4 week Summer Course that lasts from June 24 – July 19. Registration is encouraged for open-minded, inquisitive students who desire to develop the design skills and practices needed to serve society as collaborative thinkers, informed doers and accountable leaders. The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. “Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area. The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
- Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
- Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
- Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
- Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
