Welcome Honors College Students!

A Welcome from Dean Toni Doolen: 

Welcome to the 2023-2024 academic year! All of us here in the Honors College are so excited for the year ahead and the opportunity to support you in making the most of your time at Oregon State University and in the HC. Whether you are new to the honors community or returning, Honors College advisors and staff members are here to help you connect with everything OSU has to offer. This weekly Monday Message email will keep you informed about upcoming activities and opportunities, and I encourage you to engage in and explore whatever is of interest to you – everyone in the honors community is welcome! If you haven’t already done so, please also sign up for the Honors College Community Connector app. If you have any questions or face any challenges, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the Honors College staff or faculty members. Each of us on the HC team is committed to your success and is ready to support you, however we can. I look forward to everything that we can achieve this year together.

HCSA Events

NEW & WEEKLY! Honors College Student Association (HCSA) Club Meetings
Starting next Monday come meet other students, volunteer, practice leadership, plan events or get involved with the Honors College this fall! The Honors College Student Association holds general meetings every Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. in LInC 303. We’re looking for new students to join the leadership team and have specific positions open for first-year students! Come learn more about HCSA! All HC students are welcome to join.

NEW! HCSA Ice Cream Social
On Monday, October 2 at 7 p.m., get ready for an ice cream social after the HCSA general meeting! This will be taking place outside LInC 303. Enjoy some ice cream and learn about leadership opportunities, event planning, volunteering, networking opportunities and more within HCSA and the wider HC community. All are welcome to join HCSA!

HC Announcements and Events

NEW & TODAY! FORTE: Academic Onboarding
All incoming first-year and transfer students will attend FORTE, a 3-hour academic experience designed to support your transition to OSU’s learning environment. Each block includes an 80-minute keynote session, followed by two 40-minute breakouts. These sessions will be held from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at various locations.

NEW & TODAY! HC Summer Read
Today Monday, September 25 join the Honors College in discussing The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee. Summer read discussion groups are one-hour conversations with peers and a staff facilitator. If you have any questions or need help finding your conformation email, please email courtney.lira@oregonstate.edu. All discussions will be taking place in LInC on the 3rd floor. 

NEW & TOMORROW! New Student Convocation and Orange & Black Rally
Convocation is one of two seminal ceremonies that bookend the academic year. Whereas Commencement celebrates the graduating class, Convocation celebrates the incoming class. Each fall, Oregon State University welcomes the incoming class of students at the New Student Convocation ceremony. Convocation, which literally translates to “come together,” is a ceremony in which we welcome OSU’s new students to campus. Please plan to meet in either Sackett Hall F & G lounge, West Hall main lounge, or on the LInC lawn at 2:30 p.m. to walk to the New Student Walk and Convocation beginning in the MU Quad. Dean Doolen will be escorting all incoming Honors College students on the largest tradition of OSUWelcome, your official academic welcome to Oregon State, from 3:30-6 p.m.

NEW! HC Walking Tours
Join our HC Ambassadors and take a tour of Downtown Corvallis or our Natural Areas on Thursday, September 28! Ambassadors will be leading a group at 2 p.m. to our Natural Areas and covered bridge and at 4:30 p.m. to Downtown Corvallis.  Meet up with Ambassadors outside the Learning Innovation Center (LInC).

NEW! HC Tailgate
The Honors College presents the 2023 (beaver) Tailgate! Join us onFriday, September 29 from 3:30-5 p.m. on the LInC Lawn for food, games, and music as Oregon State takes on the Utah Utes. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m.!

NEW! Second Year in Connection (SYNC) Movie Event
Are you a 2nd year HC student? Watch your email for more details about a fun movie event taking place on Thursday, October 5 from 7-9:15 p.m. at the Darkside theater.

NEW! Bowling with the HC- Fall Family Weekend
Come join other HC students and their families for an afternoon of bowling and bollard games. Light food and drinks will be available. This event is taking place on Friday, October 13 from 3-5 p.m. at MU Lanes & Games.

NEW! HC Fall Festivity
You won’t want to miss this event! Join us on Tuesday, October 24 from 5-7 p.m. in the LInC quad for food, drinks, games, music, drawings, prizes and more. This annual tradition is a chance for the entire Honors College community to celebrate the start of the academic year. Meet new friends, challenge HC faculty to a basketball match, or paint a pumpkin to put in your room! There will be carnival-styled food with lots of activities.Register for this event on the Honors College Community Connector App.

NEW! SLUG Renovations
In late October the SLUG will be undergoing minor renovations. It will still be open however computer usage will be limited and it may be noisy. Any questions about the renovation can be emailed to Laura Blackwell at laura.blackwell@oregonstate.edu.

Scholarship & Financial Aid Opportunities

HC Differential Tuition Emergency Grant
The Honors College encourages students experiencing unusual financial challenges to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant of $500. This is not a scholarship and is designed to provide short-term, immediate support. Contact bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu or an Honors College advisor with questions.

HC Experiential Award Application
Honors students who have submitted a thesis proposal are eligible to apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship of up to $750 in support of participation at a professional conference or engagement in thesis research. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

Hey HC Students! We’re currently hiring for a Student Media Assistant – Monday Message Editor.  This paid position offers 8-10 hours per week remotely with some flexibility. If you’re an HC student with great organization and communications skills, a keen eye for detail and have experience with Word Press or MailChimp, this could be the perfect job for you. NEW! Part-Time Job Fair
This job fair allows students interested in part-time jobs or internships to interact with local employers stationed at tables in the Student Experience Center Plaza. Representatives from these companies accept job applications on-site and interact with students eager to seek employment! Students are encouraged to stop by on Wednesday, October 4 anytime from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The University Legislative Scholars (ULS) is a year-long experiential learning program that enables students to engage in public policy issues at the state level while also increasing student advocacy in the Oregon legislative process. NEW! Students: Borrow your Textbooks for Free!
The Basic Needs Center (BNC) has a Textbook Lending Library open to all on-campus students that includes books, calculators, chemistry model sets, and more. Visit their Textbook Lending Program website to see resources available at the BNC. Starting Monday, September 18, visit the BNC in-person at Champinefu Lodge to check out course materials.

NEW! Beaver Community Fair
Connect with the Beaver Community on Friday, October 6 from 12-4 p.m. in the MU Quad and Sec Plaza! Annually the Beaver Community Fair draws together the OSU and greater Corvallis communities to celebrate the start of the academic year.  Over two hundred different booths representing OSU departments & student organizations, Corvallis community agencies & businesses and local non-profit organizations are coming together to make visible the opportunity to connect with services, products, and involvement opportunities on campus and around the area.

HC Resources

The Honors College main office in LInC 450 is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. HC staff is on hand during business hours to assist with questions, help with scheduling appointments or just chat and share some free candy. You can also get in touch with the main office by contacting honors.college@oregonstate.edu or by calling 541.737.6400. 

NEW! HC Study Groups
Need a way to deepen your understanding of course material, discuss challenging concepts and study for upcoming exams and assignments with your fellow beavs? Sign up for the fall term HC study groups! Study groups are a great way to receive extra academic support in any of your courses. If you would like to participate in fall term HC study groups, please email bailey.garvin@oregonstate.edu by Monday, October 9!

“Forgot Your Lunch?” Station Available in SLUG
The Honors College is back with a “Forgot Your Lunch?” station for you to have a snack or light lunch if you ever need it. Whether you need food because you forgot your lunch, are low on money or simply need a snack, please help yourself to this free resource. The resource is self-serve and can be accessed any time that the SLUG is open in the kitchen area.

Campus opportunity: 
Finishing up your research/ thesis but don’t know how to talk about it. College of AgSci is hosting a workshop about how to create a poster and give an elevator pitch. This can be helpful for the HC thesis external communication requirement. All students are welcome regardless of major. Thursday, October 12 from 6-7:30pm in LINC 303. If you have questions please reach out to Rachel Jones

  • The student computer lab and lounge (the SLUG) on the third floor of LInC 340 will be open:
    • Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m.-9:00 p.m.
    • Friday – 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday – noon- 6:00 p.m.
    • Sunday – 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

These resources are available throughout the term.
