HCSA Events This Week

NEW! HCSA Hosts the Intro to Pomodoro Study Night!
You bring the homework, we’ll bring the snacks! Join the HCSA for a chill study event. They will be in LInC 360 on Wednesday, Jan. 12 from 4-5:30 p.m.. No need to RSVP just pop on by and take a seat. They will be testing out the Pomodoro method for studying. Join to see if it’s right for you!

Panelists and Pastries Join us for this HCSA Professional Development opportunity! This event will be a panel with upperclassmen and graduate students that give first and second year students (honors and non-honors) an opportunity to ask questions regarding undergrad research, working while in college, how to manage time successfully, life after undergrad and more. Catering will be provided – so free snacks and desserts! This will take place on Thursday, 5-6pm, of week 4 (January 27th) in the West Hall lounge. Please RSVP here. We hope to see you there!

Forgot your Lunch Program Changes We’ve made some changes to the Forgot Your Lunch food cabinet! Our hope is to offer an opportunity for students to grab a free lunch if they need it, so stop by to make a sandwich, eat some oatmeal, or grab some soup. Please be sure to only grab one lunch per day so there is enough for everyone! The Forgot Your Lunch is still located in the SLUG Kitchen cabinet.

NEW! Dean & Friends Virtual Conversation on “Insights from a creative Native: Leveraging passions for professional opportunities”
All Honors College students are invited to a virtual Dean and Friends conversation on “Insights from a creative Native: Leveraging passions for professional opportunities” this Wednesday, Jan. 19 from12-12:50 p.m.overZoom. This is a rescheduled event originally planned for November, 2021. The guest at this session will be Neebinnaukzhik Southall a 2011 Honors College graduate who received their HBFA in applied visual arts. Neebin is a member of the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, and they run a small creative business (Neebin Studios) and work as a graphic designer, artist, photographer, and writer in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They also maintain a list of Indigenous graphic designers at the Native Graphic Design Project. Neebin is fundamentally concerned with representing Native peoples in a positive and empowering way through their work. At this Dean and Friends, they will talk about their career and discuss how individual interests, ideas, and passions can be translated into opportunities. TOMORROW! GRAMMY U Informational Presentation
The GRAMMY U Oregon State informational presentation will provide information about what GRAMMY U is, what benefits are offered to GRAMMY U Members, how to apply, along with details about the application process. This Zoom conference will take place tomorrow Tuesday, Jan. 11 from 4-5 p.m.. This event is open to all students interested in pursuing a career in the music/entertainment industry. Submit Nomination for Student Spotlight
The HC is currently accepting nominations for students to feature in their Student Spotlight series. If you know of a student who you think deserves recognition for their studies, research, service or a specific area of interest please submit their name and the reason for the nomination here. The honors college willcontact selected students for permission and to schedule a short interview. Self-nominations are welcome!

Thesis Survey about Outdoor Recreation
Jensen Davis is currently surveying students about their time spent participating in outdoor activities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. This study, Outdoor recreation rates during COVID-19 quarantine, hopes to look at how people have changed their recreation habits over the past year to better predict how to manage recreation areas in the future. The survey found here will only take 5-10 minutes and will help Davis with their thesis!

Scholarship and Financial Aid Opportunities

NEW! 2022 Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship
Applications are being accepted for the 2022 Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship! The scholarship honors and recognizes OSU undergraduates who are community engaged leaders actively involved in activities beyond course work and who have demonstrated that they are committed to advancing a more caring, equitable, and socially just OSU and/or local community. Current OSU undergraduate students who have completed at least one year of enrollment at any OSU campus, or another college or university (2-year or 4-year) are eligible to apply.  Applications via Scholar Dollars are due by Tuesday, Feb. 15. In 2022 five students will be awarded a one-time scholarship in the amount of $2,000. Jason Halstead and Robert Chapman Scholarship Fund

SNAP Outreach at the HSRC
Students may be eligible for $234 a month in grocery funds! SNAP is a federal nutrition benefits program, and the Human Services Resource Center at Oregon State assists with applications! For more information visit the SNAP link here

Honors College Experiential Award Application
Honors students participating in professional conferences or in need of financial support for research expenses related to their thesis can apply for an Honors Experiential Scholarship. The application can be found here. Only applicants who have submitted a signed thesis proposal to the Honors College are eligible for research expense support. The maximum award is $750, and all awards are paid as scholarships to recipients’ OSU accounts. Contact Kevin Stoller at kevin.stoller@oregonstate.edu with questions.

Udall Scholarship
The Udall Foundation awards scholarships of $7,000 to college sophomores and juniors on the basis of their leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to American Indian nations or to the environment. Please contact LeAnn Adam, Director of National and Global Scholarships Advising, at LeAnn.Adam@oregonstate.edu to discuss your interest in applying. The OSU campus deadline is Tuesday, Feb. 1. However it is recommended that you start applying now. 

Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant
The Honors College recognizes that these may continue to be challenging times for Honors College students and their families. We encourage students who are experiencing difficulty paying the costs associated with Honors College enrollment to apply for a one-term Honors College Differential Tuition and Emergency Grant ($500). Determinations will be made on a rolling basis and will consider both need and the likelihood of earning the Honors Baccalaureate. See the application for additional information.

Professional Development & Job Opportunities

NEW! Honors College Representative at the Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program
Through a generous gift by Dr. Kim Eagle, the Honors College is pleased to offer a paid internship with the Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program (MCORRP). This summer internship program is a 10-week opportunity, starting in the first week of June and concluding in August, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. The intern participating in the program will join a diverse group of students from various schools across the country, work on a research project and experience medicine first hand. More information about the Michigan Program can be found here. This internship includes a stipend, as well as a housing and travel allowance. To apply students should be interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, and be a strong steward of OSU and the Honors College. Preference will be given to students who are completing their third year of study within the HC. The application deadline is January 31, 2022. The Honors College is currently looking to hire a part-time videographer. This position is open to all current HC students, with approximately 6-8 hours per week (max. 20 hours). NEW! HC France and London Study Abroad Informational Session
Are you interested in going abroad with the Honors College? Join the HC this Friday, Jan. 14 from 12-1 p.m. in LInC 360 for an informational session on the HC 2022 faculty-led summer study abroad trips to France and London! For the France program: From exploring efforts by French leaders to confront climate change to immersing yourself in France’s history, culture and food system, hear how OSU faculty plan to transform the cities of Paris and Lyon into dynamic, interactive classrooms for 18 days. For London: This 3-week program is geared toward incoming HC students but open to all students in the HC, and includes one required Bacc Core course, HST 102H: History of Western Civilization, and the choice of one of two colloquia:HC 407: Crime and Punishment, which explores American vs. British justice systems, or HC 407: Crossing an Ocean with Wires and Waves. Those who are interested but unable to attend can complete this webform here to receive additional information and updates about the programs. For questions about the France program, contact James Sterns at jasterns@oregonstate.edu and for questions on study abroad in London, contact Susan Rodgers at susan.rodgers@oregonstate.edu.

NEW! Soundbox 5 Artist Festival Open Call
Soundbox 5 is looking for new and collaborative works that demonstrate intermedia, cross-disciplinary works of art. All forms of art are welcome to participate in this interdisciplinary festival that will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 23-24.  Last year, Soundbox 4 brought together over 100+ participants. There was a record number of educators, community members, songwriters, video artists, engineers, sound artists, composers, animators, visual artists, and technologists who participated run this festival. This year, they are particularly interested in showcasing class projects (from all over the campus and throughout communities) that demonstrate new and adventurous creative collaborations!

Attend a free workshop offered by Valley Library this term. All sessions take place over Zoom. You must register to attend. These workshops are open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Join the COE Grand Challenges Program
Join this nationally recognized program and help contribute to the grand engineering challenges in the 21st century. The National Academy of Engineering created the Grand Challenges Scholars Program to challenge the next generation of engineers with ways to improve the globe through the themes of Health, Sustainability, Security, and Joy of Living. The closing date for the application is Monday, Feb. 14. Grow to Pro 2022
Grow to Pro is the Leadership Academy’s winter term flagship event. Grow to Pro focuses on engineering professional development through two important skill areas: networking and interviewing. In a supportive environment, engineering students practice these skills with the help of engineering industry partners and alumni. This event will take place on Saturday, Jan. 29 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the Toyota Club level in Reser Stadium. They will thoughtfully pair students with industry professionals for 1-1 and panel interview practice, and all attendees will be able to participate in a special networking lunch. Academics for Student Athletes has multiple openings for tutors. These are paid on-campus positions that offer flexible schedules. These positions are also wonderful opportunities to help fellow students gain subject mastery and the organizational skills needed to excel at OSU. Tutor applicants must be at a junior level or above and hold an overall GPA of 3.0. All tutoring will be performed in person during the winter term. Community Health Fellowship Gap Year
The Community Health Fellowship is a unique “gap year” opportunity for recent college graduates from across the country. The organization provides housing and a monthly educational stipend. Project Horseshoe Farm offers Community Health Fellowship programs in Alabama and California. This upcoming year, HSF is offering a traditional Gap-Year Fellowship, which will begin in June of 2022 and finish in July of 2023at Greensboro, Marion, and Pomona sites. SLUG Hours and Info!
The HC student learning space in the Learning Innovation Center, room 340 – called the SLUG – is open! Winter term SLUG hours:

– Sunday – 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
– Monday-Thursday – 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
– Friday – 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
– Saturday – noon to 6 p.m.

The SLUG features study and social areas, more than 20 computers, a scanner and a friendly HC student staff member who can help with any questions. In addition, honors students can print for free when using SLUG computers! The SLUG also offers a small kitchen. Bring your own coffee pods and brew up a cup in our new Keurig machine! The HC Forgot Your Lunch food cabinet is available as well with free snacks for anyone who needs it. All students visiting the SLUG will be expected to sign in and wear masks while using the facility.
