Montana Conservation Corps is an AmeriCorps national service program that serves communities and conservation needs throughout the northern range of the Rocky Mountains.  Young adult participants enroll as AmeriCorps members who serve between 3-9 months.

Montana Conservation Corps has many field opportunities coming up in 2015.  These opportunities range from 5-9 month enrollments or summer-only opportunities.  All of these opportunities provide students with an education award and hands-on experience that will be a great addition to their resume.

There is also a special opportunity for Armed Forces Veterans and Service Members through Montana Conservation Corps called the Veterans Green Corps.  This is a field-based opportunity in which participants enroll as AmeriCorps members who dedicate a term of service to the betterment of America’s public lands.

Winter career fairs are quickly approaching!

All Majors Career Fair: February 18th, 11am-4pm

Employers including Airgas, Georgia-Pacific, Roseburg Forest Products, and the U.S. Forest Service will be in the CH2M Hill Alumni Center on February 18th from 11am-4pm to meet with prospective employees.  All majors are welcome to attend! Engineering Career Fair: February 19th, 11am-4pm

Many of the employers at these job fairs will be conducting interviews the day after the event.  So remember to bring your up to date resume and dress your best at the winter career fairs!

Happy Week 5 College of Forestry!

Are you interested in leadership opportunities?  Here is an exciting new opportunity for Oregon State University undergraduate students:

The Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is an international research study focused on understanding the influences of higher education in shaping socially responsible leadership capacity and other leadership related outcomes (e.g., efficacy, cognitive skills, and resiliency). The MSL is one of the largest studies of undergraduate college student leadership* to date. OSU is only one of 250 campuses world-wide who will participate in the upcoming 2015 study.

The goal of the MSL is to increase student participation.  Over 4000 undergraduate students have been invited to participate and are entered to win gift cards worth up to $500.

OSU wants to hear your story! Your participation in the MSL survey will directly shape how OSU helps all students find opportunities to do things that matter and positively transform our world.

Are you looking for a summer internship?  Or perhaps a job after you graduate in the spring?

Employers from multiple companies will be on campus in the upcoming weeks, ready to network with you and perhaps even schedule an interview!  Make sure to mark the following dates on your calendars:

• January 22: Lone Rock Timber will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:30 pm, pizza will be provided.  They have several internships and full time positions.  Interview sign-up sheets are located in the Student Services Office, Pvy 250, for interviews on Jan. 23rd.
• January 26: Plum Creek will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:00 pm.  Attend the session to learn about interview opportunities that are scheduled for Jan. 27th.
• January 27: Olympic Resource Management will be in Peavy 256 from 5:00-6:00 pm.  Pizza will be provided.
• January 28: Stimson Lumber will be in Peavy 256 from 6:30-7:30.  Pizza will be provided.
• February 3: Linn County Parks & Recreation will be in Peavy 276 from 10:30-11:30 AM.

Also note that Tuesday, February 3rd is the SAF Job Fair from 10 am to 3 pm, located in the Richardson Knuckles.

• Idaho Department of Lands will be visiting the SAF Job Fair on Feb. 3rd, and conducting interviews on Feb. 4th.  Job descriptions for summer/seasonal positions and interview sign-up sheets are available at the Student Services Office, Pvy 250.

Even if you are a freshman this year, you are welcome and encouraged to attend these events. Employers notice the people that show up each year to the job fair and they get to know them that much better!

Are you a graduating senior?

Have you considered going to graduate school?  The OSU College of Business has a visit scheduled January 7, 2015 from 5:00-6:00 PM in Peavy Hall, Room 256, to discuss their MBA program with College of Forestry students. The MBA offers many tracks and degrees, including Business Analytics, Commercialization, Executive Leadership, Wealth Management, Global Operations, and Marketing.  An MBA can be earned in as little as 9 months, and students can attend class full-time or part-time.  Contact Melissa Almanza if you have any questions about the MBA program.  Her office is located in Austin Hall, 326E.  Email her at Melissa.Almanza@oregonstate.edu.

Coming soon: “Backpacks to Briefcases,” a workshop given by Student Alumni Ambassador Ashley Levario, designed to give students the skills needed to be successful in the professional world and to aid in the transition from student to employee.  This workshop will be in April, check back for the specific date and time!

It’s Dead Week Beaver Nation!  That means that classes for fall term are coming to an end and the much anticipated winter break is upon us.  Whatever will we do with all of our free time?!

One productive thing we could do (besides filling out our 2015-16 Scholarship Application) is to begin preparing for the 2015 SAF Student Chapter Job Fair, happening on February 3rd! So, what are some good ways to prepare?

Follow these steps:

• Update your resume over Winter break
• Schedule a time to visit Career Services, located in Kerr B008, early in the winter term.  They will review your resume and you can schedule a mock interview
• Look through your closet and make sure you have what it takes to dress for success!

You can visit the Career Services website for tips and tools to make your resume attractive and professional, as well as get more information on how to impress future employers.

As always, if you have any questions about the Job Fair, stop by the Student Services Office, located in Peavy 250!

Being a college student is expensive.  Students work hard, in and out of the classroom and there is an opportunity to be rewarded for all of that diligent labor!  The College of Forestry Scholarship Application for the 2015-2016 Academic Year is now open!

To be eligible to receive a scholarship award ALL students must:

• Maintain full-time enrollment (at least 12 credits) during Fall, Winter, and Spring terms.
• The College of Forestry must be on record as your primary college (for students who have double majors).
• Make reasonable and continued progress toward your College of Forestry degree program while receiving a scholarship.
• If dual enrolled in the Degree Partnership Program, at least 6 of the minimum 12 required per term credits must be at OSU.  You also must provide the CoF proof of your community college registration.
• Maintain high academic standards (generally considered to be at least a 3.0 OSU Accumulative GPA for continuing students; minimum GPA expectations are similar for first-year students and transfer students).

Through the generosity of our donors, the College awarded over $500,000 in undergraduate scholarships for the 2014-15 academic year with individual awards ranging from $1,000 – $9,000. The average cumulative GPA of those students awarded was 3.53. While scholarships are generally based on academic performance, some are specific to need, degree program, or other criteria set by our donors, so don’t hesitate to apply.

The scholarship deadline is March 15, 2015!

Good luck on your application!

It’s already week 7 of Fall term and class grades are beginning to stabilize, so now is the time to ask yourself: “Are my grades where I want them to be?” and “Should I allow this course to affect my GPA?”  If you answered no to either of these questions, talk to your advisor and see if it is possible to S/U a troublesome class, or even withdraw from it.

To S/U a class means changing from the traditional A-F grading basis to a satisfactory/unsatisfactory one.  If you choose to do this, you need to fill out the Change of Grading Basis Form and have it signed by your advisor.  A grade of an “S” or a “U” has no grade point equivalency and will not be calculated into your overall GPA.

A withdrawn course will appear on your transcript with a grade of W. The W grade does not affect your GPA. The W grade indicates that the course was withdrawn after the drop period.  To withdraw from a class, there also needs to be documentation of approval.  This is called a Late Change of Registration Petition.  This also needs an instructor’s signature and is highly recommended to have an advisor’s signature as well.

The deadline to S/U or Withdraw from a class is Friday, November 14!
