This pilot project will focus on dairy calf lung health with wildfire smoke exposure. Ultrasound can be used to observe the status of young calf lungs. While this technique has mostly been used to track respiratory disease, we anticipate it can also be used to check for effects of inhaling smoke over multiple days.
Similar to the adult cow study, baseline measurements will be taken on a cohort of calves. If there is a wildfire event that reduces air quality, we will shorten the observational interval in order to see how quickly lung damage develops (if it does) and if the damage resolves or remains through the monitoring phase.
