A Persevering Pair of P4 Students – Kayla Ruhl Grzybowski (’16) reflects on ASHP Clinical Competition

Kayla Ruhl Grzybowski (’16) and Patrick Brown (’16) competed in our local ASHP Clinical Skills Competition (CSC) through all four years of their pharmacy education. Kayla shared the experiences she had over those four years.

“I remember sitting in class after a mere month of pharmacy education, and unexpectedly, a couple of P2s entered the classroom to promote the ASHP CSC. Although my ‘clinical skills’ were tenuous, I was intrigued by the challenge and thankful to have met Patrick, who was just as enthusiastic as I about the opportunity to participated in the CSC.
“After a few weeks of reviewing past cases it was time for the first round. After reading the case and blankly staring at our patient care plan template, we looked at each other in what felt like defeat. Two hours felt like 10 minutes and before we knew it, we had contracted a care plan and left the room feeling content with our performance. To our surprise, we advanced to the second round of the competition alongside four P4 teams. The oral presentation was nerve-racking and we quickly realized we had a LOT of room for improvement.
“Advancing to the second round of the competition as P1s was impressive, but we wanted more, we wanted to prove to the judges that we knew how to deliver an oral presentation and defend our answers; we wanted to win. We made a pact to stick together as a team and compete in the CSC throughout pharmacy school. Our goal was to win the local competition and advance to the National competition and represent the OSU|OHSU College of Pharmacy.
“We stuck to our plan and competed in the local CSC as a team all four years of pharmacy school. With each competition we felt more and more confident in our care plans and oral presentations, and as P4s, we achieved our goal and advanced to the ASHP National Competition in New Orleans, LA!”

Thirteen teams competed in our local competition last fall. Students participated in teams of two to create a Pharmacist’s Care Plan for a given patient case. The top 5 winning teams, determined by pharmacist judges, continued to the oral presentation. The results of our local competition are:
