Dr. Gary DeLander, PhD, Receives National APhA-ASP Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award

The American Pharmacists Association – Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) has selected Dr. Gary DeLander, PhD, as the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award.  This prestigious award is given to one chapter advisor nationally and was presented to Dr. DeLander during the APhA Annual Meeting March 9-12 in New Orleans, LA.

Dr. DeLander is the Executive Associate Dean of the Oregon State University College of Pharmacy.  He has been recognized for his remarkable commitment to student pharmacists and to the pharmacy profession through numerous awards including Graduating Class Professor of the Year, OSPA Special Service Award, and the Bowl of Hygeia Award.

The Outstanding Chapter Advisor award is given to one who “has promoted with distinction the welfare of student pharmacists through various professional activities.” Dr. DeLander has served as APhA-ASP chapter advisor at OSU for many years and tirelessly advocates for student professional development in this capacity.   It is through his leadership that OSU students have developed a strong professional umbrella organization, Oregon State Student Pharmacists (OSSP), introducing students to advocacy and critical issues across a diversity of practice settings through involvement in several state and national professional associations.

In the words of the student pharmacist who nominated Dr. DeLander for this award,

“Dr. Delander helps us as students to grow our skills, increase our participation and further develop as student pharmacists and members of our community. He encourages us to continually seek improvements in our chapter, find new opportunities for ourselves and our fellow students, and to step outside the confines of our campus and look to serve our profession on the state and regional level. He is fond of the saying that ‘all pharmacists are clinical pharmacists’ and encourages us to expand our roles and learning, no matter what setting we may practice in. He has a deep respect for our profession and takes joy in educating himself and the students of the future.”

The Oregon State University is pleased to congratulate Dr. DeLander on the receipt of the APhA-ASP Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award and to thank him for his continuing service to the College’s student pharmacists.
