Cover the Uninsured

The College of Pharmacy collaborated with other professional colleges (Nursing, Medical, and Dentistry) at Oregon Health and Science University to organize and plan an annual outreach event called “Cover the Uninsured Week (CTUW).” Cover the Uninsured is an event that provides healthcare for the underserved and uninsured population. The health fair on March 6 marked the beginning of this year’s event.

At the health fair, pharmacy students were expected to be involved in four functions: 1) administer flu vaccines, 2) medication reconciliation and medication therapy management, 3) dispensing medications and counseling and 4) blood glucose screenings. Unlike previous years, it was recommended by student-pharmacists that they lead and plan all decisions regarding medications. With the help from our sponsors, we purchased over $1500 of medications which included over 20 different OTC products. At the end of the day, we served 300 participants, which was doubled from previous years!

Special thanks to the preceptors and resident for attending the event; Irene Croswell, Kiyomi Kamaguchi, Kara Robinson, and Lisa Perry (PGY1-resident). To the students who volunteered their time to make this event possible: Celine Chan, Evan Duce, Rory Fifield, Angela Hamman, Darlene Harshbarger, Rebecca Huffman, Ben Kong, Pamela Levine, Mary Luttropp, Mai-Hong Nguyen, Angela Scott, Amy Speakman, and Yennie Quach, thank you.

And thanks to the following students who helped organized the event: Celine Chan, Tammy Chan, Angela Hamman, and Minh Pham. Last but not least, thanks to Dr. Braden-Suchy for the Walgreens Grant, and Dr. Bearden for overseeing the operation.
