2011 Chinese New Year Culture Fair Outreach

The 2011 Chinese New Year Culture Fair was held on Saturday February 5th, 2011 from 10 AM to 6 PM at the Oregon Convention Center. The event showcased both traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities including Chinese folk dances, Chinese instrumental music, Kung Fu and martial arts demonstrations, and other unique performances. There was approximately 6,000 people in attendances and more than 50 vendors.

Oregon State University College of Pharmacy was lucky to have a large booth donated to help provide health screenings and give patient information relating to their health. A total of 35 students and five preceptors helped give 180 blood glucose screenings, 80 blood pressure screenings, and more. At least 400-500 patients were given information about different health topics including AWARE, diabetes, smoking cessation, high cholesterol, and hypertension.

Special thanks to Fred Meyer and Roche for donating test strips, meters, and lancets, Justin Harmers’ Safeway for donating over 100 sharp containers to give out, Dr. Natalea Braden-Suchy and the Diversity Committee for their generous grant for diabetic supplies, Portland Chinese Times for donating the booth and hosting the event, and finally everyone else that helped out and made this event possible.
