When in comes to employee satisfaction, some aspects are subjective while others are more universal. However, regardless of the specific facet that an employee deems most important towards their satisfaction, a company’s human resources department plays an important role in implementing and advocating those aspects. Therefore ensuring human resource departments are in touch with employees needs, experiences, and objectives allows a company to run more effectively. Using data from A Great Place to Work, I was able to compare the employee satisfaction and examine the HR departments within three companies; Salesforce, The Cheesecake Factory Incorporated, and Hilton.
Salesforce is a large information technology company which 82% of employees agree is a great place to work. These employees feel that this organization meets their needs by valuing work life balance, feeling welcome, and demonstrating their ability to be responsible. These needs are directly supported by the company’s HR department who must be doing a good job because the employees also report that they are proud to work here and feel good about their work.
The Cheesecake Factory Incorporated is a large hospitality restaurant chain based out of the US. 88% of their employees agree that this is a great place to work as their HR department has facilitated a company culture that promotes a welcome environment, respect for employees at all levels, and work life balance. Additionally, HR ensures that all employees have the resources they need to succeed and that special events are celebrated which supports employee moral.
Hilton is a large hospitality organization with an emphasis on providing travels a warm, welcoming place to lodge. 96% of their employees state that this is a great place to work which is the highest ranking company on our list and very impressive. Their HR focuses on two elements that the other hospitality organization I compared also values; respect for employees at all levels and a welcome environment. However, Hilton’s HR takes it even further where their employees feel very confident that management is both ethical and honest and offers quality benefits. Employees are proud to work here.
As a manager, I would hope to promote many of the same aspects that these companies have such as a welcome environment, ethical, and honest. While, in the real world, there are limitations (financial or logistical) to what benefits can be offered to employees, I hope to foster an environment where employees feel comfortable to report concerns and ask for their needs while still maintaining a professional environment. I personally value work life balance, great benefits, each employee feeling important, and a hands off management style. With these in mind, the biggest challenge for me would be ensuring that employees are actually completing their work to the high level I expect because some employees require active management while I prefer a more autonomous approach.
