Typical vs. Maximal Performance

Week 5

If I were in the shoes of a business owner and had to choose whether to hire Avery (a high-performing ceiling) or Jamie (a consistent employee) it would be a difficult to choose which employee to hire.  To me it all depends on what type of job the employee is going to fill and the size of the company.  Personally, I am going to choose to hire Jamie.  I value hard work and grit over talent that is lazy most of the time.  I want an employee that is going to show up to work and motivate others as well as produce consistent work day in and day out.

A job such as a professional athlete may be a good for an employee like Avery.  For example, maybe a sports team that is on the verge of winning a championship and you need a high-performance talented athlete for a short time frame.  During the season the athlete can be high-performing, and then during the offseason they may take more of a break.  Avery likes to be measured off of ability and their ‘can do’ measures of performance.

A job such as a computer engineer or software engineer may be a good fit for a person like Jamie.  Jamie would be more valuable in this situation because Jamie is a very consistent and hard worker and will be capable of doing long hard hours of code.  Jamie is measured by what they are willing to do, and also shows how they can motivate themselves.
