OSU Promotes Active Transportation Through Open Streets Collaboration

OSU’s Transportation Services is excited to be a sponsor of the City’s upcoming 7th Annual Open Streets Corvallis event. The event features a car-free route between Lilly Park and Willamette Park in south Corvallis. This free community festival re-imagines two miles of city streets as a family-friendly block party promoting physical activity. The event will feature giant games, bicycle-powered rides, fitness classes, cultural activities, local food and drink, street installations, dance, music, and more.

Portland, Eugene, Salem, Hood River, and Bend hold similar events. Open Streets Corvallis is uniquely collaborative, with neighbors hosting activities in their yards along the route. Each of the past seven festivals has highlighted a different neighborhood in Corvallis.

For Open Streets, cars are detoured to maintain space for those on foot, riding bikes, or using other modes of active transportation.  Attendees enjoy gathering in public parks, and experience using the whole street for walking and riding together. With its focus on active transportation, Open Streets supports OSU’s Sustainable Transportation Strategy, which aims to lower drive-alone trips to the Corvallis campus by improving access to active transportation, transit, remote work and carpooling. Open Streets is a natural fit for the goals of the Strategy, according to Sustainable Transportation Coordinator Elza Records. “By participating in Open Streets Corvallis, OSU is empowering our communities to enjoy more sustainable transportation options,” she said.
