Update, effective September 12, 2024: The Veo service area now includes OSU campus and surrounding neighborhoods, with designated parking areas on private property only.
As fall term begins, there are two new ways to roll at OSU. The Associated Students of Oregon State University (ASOSU) and OSU Transportation Services are pleased to introduce a Shared Micromobility Pilot Program. The program kicked off on August 9, bringing seated electric scooters and pedal-powered bicycles to bike racks across the Corvallis campus for short-term rental.
This pilot was sparked when ASOSU leaders identified a need among students for an affordable transportation option that would help alleviate bike theft. They reached out to OSU Transportation Services, whose Sustainable Transportation Plan recommends a bike and scooter share program, among other actions. A selection committee chose Veo to operate the shared micromobility pilot due to their successful implementation of similar programs at universities like Purdue and Texas A&M. Coordination with City Public Works staff has ensured that the pilot aligns with local regulations.
This pilot, developed with input from OSU and community stakeholders, is intended to offer a new sustainable transportation resource to students, employees, and community members. The full fleet will include 350 seated scooters and 50 pedal-powered bicycles. The pilot is set to run for one year, with the possibility of extension based on its success.
Safety is a top priority for the Shared Micromobility Pilot. Scooter speeds will be capped at 15 mph, and certain campus zones will limit scooter speeds to walking pace to enhance pedestrian safety. Also, when entering posted dismount zones like the MU Quad, scooters will stop safely. Veo will give away one free helmet for each vehicle in the fleet, in addition to Fall helmet giveaways hosted by OSU Transportation Services.
At this time, scooters can only travel on the Corvallis campus. Pedal bikes can go off campus. Both types of vehicles must end trips in designated bike racks or other zones on campus, findable in the Veo app.
Veo’s local team will be available 24/7. Any issues can be reported to hello@veoride.com, by sharing the vehicle’s ID number and location. If you have questions about the Shared Micromobility Pilot, please contact transportation@oregonstate.edu
Transportation Services will lead a Micromobility Advisory Group to evaluate ridership, parking, safety, and customer satisfaction. For further details, visit ASOSU’s Bike and Scooter Share page.
