Last night “Stories & Legends from the Heart of the Valley,” a documentary film about Corvallis’ first 150 years, had its debut! And, in the final installment of Morris and Lynn Walker’s “Clips in Time” column in the Gazette Times, they discuss their expectations for the premier and a bit about how to get copies for your own collection. To learn all about the project, visit the Heart of the Valley site.

Great research on Corvallis and Benton County can be done at the Benton County Historical Society.

You can use the Gazette Times online Archive to find articles online from 1999 to the present.

You can learn about our city and county on the Corvallis and Benton County official tourism website.

As always, you can check out the Wikipedia article on Corvallis.

Tribal Council members of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and leaders of Oregon State University will sign a new memorandum of understanding on Monday April 6th. The day-long meeting will happen in the Valley Library, with a portion tomorrow morning in the Archives & Maps Reference Room. We will open at 10:00 am, so please delay your visit if you were planning an early one! The signing of a new MOU is an important act, one that deepens the 50-year relationship between the tribes and the university that began after of the 1957 flooding of Celilo Falls.

Microfilm Magic

bees-2551It’s true, all the magic really does happen in the microfilm area!

On October 28th, we had a visit from The History Detectives, and we’ve posted a few pictures and videos to our Flickr site. They were researching the history of a piece of bee’s wax and recording their findings for the hungry public television audience.

What did the detectives detect?
You’ll have to watch the episode next summer to find out, but we can report that part of the filming involved Elyse Luray doing microfilm research, as well as other general research, all under the glaring lights of the cameras.

What did she look at?
The McMinnville Telephone Register, The Wheeler Reporter and The Yamhill County Reporter.

Do we have those reels at OSU?
No, but that’s the beauty of ILL! A request to the UofO, a few days wait, and those reels made their way 45 miles north and into library lore and public tv fame.

And fun was had by all…

Celery with Cheese & Pimiento Salad SpreadWe had a great time, great food, and great guests!

In case you missed all my advertising posts, the Archives hosted The Taste of the ‘Chives on Friday afternoon. For those of you who missed the event, you can read about it in the Gazette-Times article “A taste of World War I” (make sure to watch the video clip at the bottom!) and look at the photos on our Flickr site.

Keep watching this space until the end of the month for more historic recipes.

Dance ContestTomorrow: Taste of the ‘Chives: A Historical Recipes Showcase

Our tastiest offering in observance of Oregon’s heritage this year will be a showcase of historical recipes from Extension publications, USDA Farmer’s Bulletins, and other gems from collections in the Archives and the Library. Sample all manner of sweet and savory treats that were featured in bulletins printed from 1916 to 1939 for use by various audiences, including Boys’ and Girls’ Industrial Clubs, World War One era homemakers looking for wheat and meat substitutes, and aficionados of cheese.

There are plenty of recipes still available and we would love to see more featured in this smorgasbord of bygone tastes! If you want to bring historical tastes back to life, please stop by the Archives Reference Desk on the third floor and ask for the recipe folder. If some dish deeply intrigues you, we can make a copy for you and sign you up- if nothing else they make for fun and interesting reading!
