RT-130. Hybrid and OSU Campus. Spring 2024 (Read this page carefully, and be sure to register using link below.)
Prerequisite: You must hold a NWCG qualification of Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or higher to participate in this course. (If you completed FFT2 in this calendar year you do not need to take RT-130 until 2025.)
Pre-work. Prior to March 9 view the videos listed below and be prepared to discuss them during our Zoom and field sessions.
Dates and Topics
Complete at least two (2) of the classroom sessions below, one (1) of the field sessions, and one (1) work capacity fitness test opportunity. You can choose the ones the best fit your schedule and interests.
Classroom Sessions (Complete at least two)
- March 18, 2024. Zoom session. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Fire behavior review and an exploration of plant/fuel/fire interactions.
- March 19, 2024. Zoom session. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Case studies of the Mann Gulch and Dixie-Jumbo incidents.
- April 24, 2024. Zoom session. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Considerations for homeowner defensible space and working in WUI zones.
- April 25, 2024. Zoom session. 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Case study of the South Canyon Fire (Storm King Mountain). Second case study if time allows.
Field Session Opportunities (Complete one)
- March 22, 2024. 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. (OSU Campus – Peavy 125). Fire year in review. Operational safety, LCES/10/18. Shelter deployment.
- April 26, 2024. 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. (OSU Campus – Peavy 125). Fire year in review. Operational safety, LCES/10/18. Shelter deployment.
Work Capacity Test Opportunities. (See About the Work Capacity Test for preparation and equipment recommendations.)
- March 22, 2024. 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. OSU Campus. Meet at Hatfield Courtyard, on the west side of Richardson Hall.
- April 26, 2024. 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. OSU Campus. Meet at Hatfield Courtyard, on the west side of Richardson Hall.
- If you need an alternative date for WCT, contact me (John Punches). I may be able to fit you in with the May 19 WCT for the new firefighter course.

- If you are a faculty or staff member who wants to enroll multiple persons (from your lab group, etc.) you may contact John Punches to make arrangements for group enrollment.
- Once registered you will receive the Zoom link.
Required Forms and Documentation
- Health Screening Form
- Copy of your most recent qualification card (photo or photocopy of both sides)
- Email the form and card to John Punches prior to your first class
