Week 1

Welcome to my blog! I initially wanted to write about my capstone project but since the projects have not been assigned yet, I will use this first post to share a little bit about my CS journey so far.

My career started when I became an accountant at a CPA firm back in 2014. I was a tax accountant for a couple of years until I realized I did not want to do taxes for the rest of my life. The next phase was me trying to find something I would like and qualify for. So, I jumped around 2 different jobs (still accounting related) before I decided to attend OSU.

For my first 2 years at OSU, I was working full time while taking either one or two courses per semester. Things were going fine until it was time to find an internship, it was probably the most stressful time in my journey. I was working full time, taking classes, applying to many job postings, and practicing for coding interviews. During this time, even though I was more than half way done with the program, I often thought about just stopping and staying at my stable job. As much as I disliked my old job, I enjoyed being good at my job and being someone people often came to for help. Starting an internship meant that I was leaving my stable job, and worse, starting over as a newbie. I would not be doing school on the side any more but computer science would actually be my main career. However, staying with my old job meant that I would eventually move up and take my manager’s role and I was sure I did not want to do that.

I eventually found an internship and finally quit my job. During my internship, I got a closer look at what being a software engineer is like and I was glad that I left my old career. I’m currently a full time student taking my final 2 classes before graduating. Even though I have a full time job lined up for after graduation, I’m still searching for a technology that I would like to specialized in. So, I’ve selected my top choices based partially on my interest and partially on how unfamiliar I am with the technology that they use. Hopefully, I can build something cool with my team and spark a new interest!

I’m still not looking forward to being a newbie at my new job but the excitement of this new career far outweighs the fear/dread I have for being a clueless new hire! I would love to hear about your journey in the comments. Congrats on getting almost to the other side of this program!
