University of Oregon Football Program Performance Metrics

In the previous posting titled “OSU Football: At the Crossroads”, the performance of the OSU football program was examined across the 1999-2013 period.  Performance of the program and progress toward programmatic goals was evaluated by using three important metrics: national scoring defense ranking, national scoring offense ranking, winning percentage.  National scoring defense and offense metrics permits comparisons of two essential characteristics of on-field performance across years and offensive and defensive philosophies.  These rankings illustrate how a program’s offense and defense perform in relation to peers and are elemental in nature – good teams score more than opponents and hold their opponent’s offense to lower scores regardless of the style of offense or defense.  The other metric, winning percentage, should be self-explanatory and is a function of the other two metrics.

There are several disturbing long-term trends in football performance at OSU.  These trends are evident across the present winning period that followed the 28-year losing streak that ended in 1999.  In evaluating the direction of the program as fans and observers of OSU football, one question needs to be asked – are we making progress toward our goals? Conference Team Championship Update

With today’s win over USC in baseball, OSU’s earned its second consecutive outright Pac-12 championship.  A second milestone was passed with the baseball title.  No previous decade had produced more than 7 team championships at OSU, but baseball has added an 8th championship in the decade.  That record will likely be surpassed again before the decade is complete.

Baseball RPI

The RPI or Ratings Percentage Index is a metric used by the NCAA Selection Committee as an aid in choosing schools for the 33 at-large spots and in seeding the post-season baseball tournament.  The following is intended to illustrate how the RPI is calculated so that fans can better understand the changes in RPI values and as a result, the rankings in the RPI.

A Financial Profile for OSU Wrestling

This article profiles the financial health of OSU’s wrestling program in terms of revenue generation and expenses, and trends over time.

The graphic below shows the competition-related revenues and expenses for OSU wrestling from FY 2001 to FY 2013.  The revenues charted below include ticket sales, media revenue, etc., but not donations as they are a part of non-competition revenues.  Expenses shown below include meet costs, travel, staff salaries, etc., but not facility construction or construction debt costs.  As a reminder, OSU’s fiscal year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th, thus FY 2001 started on July 1st 2000 and ended on June 30th 2001.
