OSU’s OPS pumped up by Conforto, Smith, and Davis

OSU’s current batting lineup of Tyler Smith, Michael Conforto, and Dylan Davis have done quite well at the plate as measured by OPS (On base plus slugging). OPS is a sabremetric statistic that is calculated as the sum of a batter’s on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Conforto currently leads the team with an OPS of 1.158, followed by Smith’s 1.101, and Davis at an OPS of 0.870.

Pat Casey on track to become all-time wins leader at OSU this season

OSU head baseball coach Pat Casey is on track to become the school’s all-time wins leader for Beaver baseball this season. As of today, Casey’s OSU record is 589-361-4 (0.620) in his 18th season as head coach for the Beavers. Casey needs 25 more wins this season to overtake Jack Riley, the current leader. Riley was 613-411-5 (0.598) in his 22 seasons as OSU’s head coach. After Riley and Casey, the venerable Ralph Coleman checks in with 561 wins in his career than spanned 35 seasons.

Pat Casey’s tenure as head coach accounts for 29% of OSU’s all-time wins since the inception of the baseball program in the 1907 season. With 40 more games on the regular season schedule, reaching the milestone of all-time wins leader before the season is concluded is not unreasonable.

Performance of OSU Freshman Pitchers

Each season a new crop of pitchers take the mound for OSU.  The table below shows some of the statistics for OSU’s baseball frosh over the past decade.

Some pitchers have been stellar from the very first while others needed some experience and instruction to bring out their talents.  Most recently, this cultivation of talent by the coaching staff has been observed with the development of current pre-season All-American  Tony Bryant.

Who will be the next pitcher to join the players on this list in 2012?
