August 1, 2023. A Senior Career Award is given annually by the Journal of Materials and Research Technology in Brazil to an individual with outstanding accomplishments in materials science and engineering that are globally recognized. The award for 2023 was given to Prof. Terence G. Langdon of the University of Southampton in the U.K. and the citation reads “for seminal contributions to superplasticity and severe plastic deformation in materials”. The award was presented at the ABM (Brazilian Materials Association) annual meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on 1 August 2023.

July 9-12, 2023. 14th ICSAM (International Conference on Superpplasticity of Advanced Materials) was successfully held in person after a two-year postponement. The dedicated local organizing committee, led by Prof. Jose Maria Cabrera, organized the conference at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain.

During the meeting, the Alexander Zhilyaev Awards, which honor the memory of the late Dr. Alexander Zhilyaev, were presented and given to Prof. Terence G. Langdon and Prof. Zenji Horita. Moreover, Prof. Roberto B. Figueiredo received the Best Senior Oral Presentation Award.

Prof. Megumi Kawasaki has been elected as the Chair of ICSAM (2023-2029).

July 4, 2023. Prof. Laszlo S. Toth is awarded Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of Miskolc Hungary for his contribution to strengthening scientific collaboration between the Lorraine University and the University of Miskolc in the field of severe plastic deformation. Prof. Toth is in charge of the research in metal forming at Miskolc University and at the Regional Academy of Sciences.

July 2-7, 2023. THERMEC 2023 has made a return as an in-person conference at TU Vienna, Austria. As part of this event, we successfully organized the symposium on “Ultra-Fine Grain Materials,” which garnered significant interest and participation. Prof. Ruslan Valiev and Prof. Hyoung Seop Kim had been honored with the prestigious THERMEC’2023 Distinguished Awards.

February 26 – March 3, 2023. After two years of extension, NanoSPD 8 was held at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, India. Chairman: Prof. Satyam Suwas, Co-Chairman: Prof. Praveen Kumar, both from the Materials Engineering Department, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

July 2022 – Recent citation data
The research.com website has analyzed all citation data available up to December 2021 and then, for different academic subjects, ranked the scientists in each country. Ruslan Valiev is ranked #1 in Materials Science in Russia. Other NanoSPD Russian scientists with high ranking include Boris B. Straumal (#3), Rustam Kaibyshev (#7), Gennady A. Salishchev (#17), Ilya A. Ovid’ko (#23) and Andrey Belyakov (#26).

Terry Langdon is ranked #2 in Materials Science in the U.K.

June 26 – July 01, 2022. International Conference on Strength of Materials (ICSMA 19^th) was held in Metz, France and chaired by Professor Laszlo Toth with about 260 lectures and 88 posters presented on material strength of all engineering materials; from solid to bio-materials, from nanoscale to real size structures. The event included the symposium on SPD Materials (organizer: Hyong Seop Kim).

August 30 – September 3, 2022. The 22nd Annual YUCOMAT Conference of the MRS Serbia was held in Herceg Novi, from August 30 to September 3, where were presented plenary lectures and virtual offline presentations of the most eminent scientists from around the world in materials science and nanotechnology. Nov. 23, 2020. The Gleiter Symposium on Frontiers of Nanoscience (virtual) was organized by Lanzhou University on Nov. 23, 2020 recognizing Prof. Herbert Gleiter’s ground-breaking contributions to nanoscience and nanotechnology. The Gleiter Symposium consists of plenary lectures, keynote lectures, and invited lectures covering a broad spectrum from new materials, new characterization methods and devices to the applications of nanotechnologies. February 23-27, 2020. The 2020 TMS Annual Meeting was held on February 23-27, 2020, in San Diego, California, USA with the session on Ultrafine-grained and Heterostructured Materials (UFGHXI), that tradition continued during the 2022 TMS Annual Meeting held in-person on February 27-March 03, 2022, in Anaheim, California, USA presenting more than 90 symposia and covering a broad range of topics related to minerals, metals, and materials science and engineering. The event included the session on Ultrafine-grained and Heterostructured Materials (UFGH XII) with a focus on all aspects of the science and technology of heterostructured and UFG materials and covers a broad scope, ranging from fundamental science to their industrial applications.

June 23-28, 2019. The Gordon Research Conference on Heterogeneous Materials was held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and was chaired by Professors Qizhen Li and Yuntian T. Zhu. The conference subject areas included Heterogeneous Materials for Structural Applications, Multifunctional and Multiscale-architectured Materials, Dynamic Mechanical Behavior of Metals, Plastic Deformation and Strength of Metallic Materials, etc. The discussions were headed and conducted by leading world scientists in the relevant area.

May 7, 2019. Professor Terry Langdon of the University of Southampton and USC was appointed an Honorary Professor of Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in a special ceremony held on 7th May, 2019. March 2019. High recognition is received in nanostructured SPD materials research by two Acta Materialia awards.

November 2018. The Sustainable Industrial Processing Summit and Exhibition (SIPS 2018) was held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, from November 4 to 7, 2018.
Following the rich tradition of previous years, the summit will cover 3 sustainability pillars: (1) Science, Technology & Industry, (2) Governance & Management and (3) Education & Civil Society. This time, the summit honors the 2018 STARS of sustainable science, technology, and innovation. In alphabetical order, they are:

August 27, 2018. The 13^th International Conference on Superplasticity in Advanced Materials (ICSAM-2018) was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, from August 19 to 22, 2018, with Prof. Rustam Kaibyshev as Chair assisted by his colleagues from Belgorod National Research University. The conference was well attended and included several sessions devoted to UFG materials. The Keynote speakers were Megumi Kawasaki (U.S.A.), Kenji Higashi (Japan), Fernando Carreña (Spain), Ming Wang Fu (Hong Kong) and Eiichi Sato (Japan). A new award was introduced named the Kaibyshev Award in honor of the late Oscar Kaibyshev, the distinguished Russian scientist who founded and became Director in 1985 of the Institute of Metals Superplasticity Problems in Ufa. The inaugural recipient of this award was Kenji Higashi from Osaka Prefecture University. The conference proceedings are now available in volume 385 of the the Defect and Diffusion Forum (2018).

June 24-29, 2018. The 14th International Conference on Nanostructured Materials (NANO 2018) was held in China by the City University of Hong Kong. Chaired by Prof. Jian Lu and co-chaired by Prof. Ke Lu and Prof. Lei Lu, with about 600 international scholars and researchers famous in nanotechnology fields, coming from 35 countries/regions and 300 different research organizations. The conference hosted the session on SPD Processed Nanomaterials with Multifunctional Properties organized by Prof. Ruslan Valiev.

March 16, 2018. In 2018 TMS initiated the Oleg D. Sherby Award in honor of the late Professor Sherby of Stanford University who had a long and distinguished career in the fields of high temperature creep and superplasticity. Terry Langdon of the University of Southampton was selected as the inaugural recipient of the award which was presented at the TMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 14, 2018. The citation for the award reads “for leading research on the mechanical behavior of materials including three- and five-power law creep, superplasticity and creep fracture, as well as for ground-breaking research on ECAP”.

Dec. 3, 2017. The 6th International Conference on Ultrafine Grained and Nanostructured Materials (UFGNSM-2017) was held on November 12 and 13, 2017, on the beautiful Kish Island off the southern coast of Iran. The meeting consisted of oral presentations held in two parallel sessions and a very large number of poster presentations.

July 21, 2017. The NanoSPD Achievement Award was introduced in 2008 in order to recognize outstanding achievements within the field of SPD processing and nanomaterials. Awards were presented to Herbert Gleiter (Germany) in 2008, Terry Langdon (U.S.A.) in 2011 and Yuri Estrin (Australia) in 2014. For 2017 the NanoSPD International Steering Committee selected Zenji Horita (Japan) as the award recipient and the photo shows Zenji receiving the official plaque and a toy koala from Ruslan Valiev. Following the procedure introduced at NanoSPD6 in 2014, two NanoSPD Young Researcher Awards were presented for outstanding contributions to research by members of the NanoSPD community under the age of 40 years.

July 21, 2017. NanoSPD7, the 7th International Conference on Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation, was held at the University of Sydney in Australia on July 2-7, 2017, with Prof. Xiaozhou Liao as Chair and Prof. Yuri Estrin as Honorary Chair. The conference was attended by more than 200 delegates from 24 different countries. Each morning and afternoon session started with a Keynote presentation and this was followed by three parallel sessions. The keynote speakers were Simon Ringer (Australia), Sergiy Divinski (Germany), Lei Lu (China), Megumi Kawasaki (Korea), Jing Tao Wang (China), Sergey Dobatkin (Russia), Tamas Ungar (Hungary) and Kaveh Edalati (Japan). There were four dedicated Young Researcher sessions for postdocs and students with an award winner selected from each session for the best oral presentation. These winners were Takahiro Masuda (Japan), Marat Latypov (France), Seung Mi Baek (Korea) and Pedro Henrique Pereira (U.K.). There were also two awards for best poster presentations for Cai Chen (France) and Zheng Li (China). The published papers are now available in the IOP Conference Series (Materials Science and Engineering, volume 194, 2017).

Dec. 24, 2016. Every year the Brazilian Academy of Sciences elects a small number of young scientists and engineers as temporary members in the academy for a period of four years. It is a pleasure to announce that Roberto Figueiredo, a member of the International NanoSPD Steering Committee and Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte, has been elected a temporary member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences for the period 2017-2020. Roberto was one of the winners of the NanoSPD Young Researcher Award at NanoSPD6 in Metz in 2014 and he is currently listed on Google Scholar with an h-index of 33.

Nov. 8, 2016. Fellow of TMS (The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) is the highest level of membership within this professional society and it is a rare honor because it is limited to not more than 100 living members. It is therefore a very great pleasure to congratulate Yuntian Zhu of North Carolina State University for his selection as a 2017 TMS Fellow. The citation reads “For pioneering contributions to the understanding of deformation physics of nanomaterials and the development of nanotechnologies to produce superior nanomaterials” and the award will be formally presented at the TMS Annual Meeting in San Diego in February 2017. With this election, there are now three TMS Fellows on the NanoSPD International Steering Committee: the others are Terry Langdon and Ruslan Valiev.

July 7, 2016. Professor Reinhard Pippan of the Erich Schmidt Institute of Materials Science in Leoben, Austria, received a THERMEC Distinguished Award on 1 June, 2016, at THERMEC’2016, the International Conference on Processing and Manufacturing of Advanced Materials in Graz, Austria. The award was presented for Reinhard’s pioneering research in the field of fatigue/fracture and severe plastic deformation of advanced materials and for leadership in materials education in Austria.

July 3, 2016. The State Award of the Republic of Bashkortostan in Science and Engineering is awarded every two years for any aspect of science and engineering conducted by a research team based primarily within the republic. The 2015 State Award was given to a team consisting of Profs. Ruslan Z. Valiev, Rinat Islamgaliev and Igor V. Alexandrov of Ufa State Aviation Technical University and Professor Terence G. Langdon. The citation reads that the award was made for their collaborative research “on developments, study and applications of novel nanocrystalline materials.” Langdon received his award on 21 June, 2016, during the annual scientific congress in Ufa and the photo shows him with Rustem Mardanov, the Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

July 2, 2016. In a special ceremony held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 15 June, 2016, Professor Terence Langdon was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) by Peter the Great Saint Petersburg Polytechnic University. The degree was awarded in recognition of Langdon’s research on the processing and properties of nanostructured metals. Jan.16, 2016. Congratulations to Ruslan Z. Valiev and Terence G. Langdon who, jointly with Profs. Rinat Islamgaliev and Igor V. Alexandrov of Ufa State Aviation Technical University, were awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Bashkortostan in Science and Technology for their series of research investigations on “The Development, Research and Application of New Nanocrystalline Materials”. The award ceremony took place in Ufa on December 29, 2015, and was hosted by the Head of the Republic, Rustem Z. Khamitov. The State Prize of the Republic of Bashkortostan is awarded every two years for significant contributions to the development of natural and technical sciences and the humanities, including the development of advanced technologies that provide innovative developments within the economic and social spheres.

Nov. 5, 2015. The Somiya Award is presented biennially by the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) for the most significant research conducted by an interactive group or team whose members are drawn from at least two continents. The award is named for Prof. Shigeyuki Somiya, emeritus professor of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and later dean at Teikyo University of Science and Engineering. The criteria for the Somiya Award include the publication in major journals of high quality research that is well recognized by the international materials community and has a major impact on technology or society. The award recipients are selected by the IUMRS Commision on Awards from all nominations received. For 2015 the Somiya Award was presented to Prof. Ruslan Valiev (Russia) and Prof. Yuntian Zhu (U.S.A.) for resolving the paradox of superior strength and ductility of ultrafine-grained metals through microstructural design. Ruslan and Yuntian published their first joint paper in 1998 and have now collaborated on a total of 66 papers. The formal award was presented to Ruslan on behalf of both recipients at the IUMRS International Conference on Advanced Materials in Jeju Island, Korea, on 28 October, 2015. This is the second time this award has been given to members of the NanoSPD International Steering Committee because in 2005 the award was presented to Prof. Zenji Horita (Japan) and Prof. Terry Langdon (U.S.A.).

September 25, 2015. Warsaw Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1900 as a Russian language institute providing engineering education in Poland. In 1915, exactly 100 years ago, the name was changed to Warsaw University of Technology and the working language was changed to Polish. Celebrations are now underway to mark the 100th anniversary of the university and the introduction, 45 years ago, of classes in metallurgy and materials science. In a special award ceremony conducted in the university on September 25, 2015, seven senior professors were presented with Friend of the Faculty Awards to mark their long-term collaborations with the Faculty of Material Science and Engineering at Warsaw University of Technology. Two of the awardees were Prof. Michael Zehetbauer (University of Vienna) and Prof. Terry Langdon (University of Southampton) who were recognized specifically for their collaborations in the field of NanoSPD.

July 2, 2015. Every three years Thomson Reuters identifies outstanding Australian researchers and their teams that made a significant contribution to one of eleven fields across all domains of science, including engineering, social science and humanities. This year’s award in the Materials Science category went to Professor Yuri Estrin for his work on Severe Plastic Deformation of Materials.

August 14, 2014. Herbert Gleiter (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany) and Terry Langdon (University of Southampton, U.K.) have been elected members of the Academia Europaea: they were the winners of the NanoSPD Achievement Award at NanoSPD4 in Germany in 2008 and NanoSPD5 in China in 2011, respectively. The induction ceremony will be held in Darmstadt, Germany, in 2015.

August 12, 2014. The 69th ABM International Annual Congress, the annual meeting of the Brazilian Metallurgical Association, was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on July 21-24, 2014. Incorporated within the meeting was the Second Pam American Materials Conference co-sponsored by TMS and consisting of several English-language symposia on topics of current interest. One of these symposia was a one-day meeting on Ultrafine-Grained Materials organized by Roberto Figueiredo and Terence Langdon. This symposium was well-attended and contained several presentations of interest to members of the NanoSPD community.

August 11, 2014. The papers from the NanoSPD6 conference in Metz, France, have now been published on the web as Open Access papers within Volume 63 of the IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering. The web address is http://iopscience.iop.org/1757-899X/63/1. Paper #011002 is a special report by Ruslan Z. Valiev and Terence G. Langdon entitled “Report of International NanoSPD Steering Committee and Statistics on Recent NanoSPD Activities.” This paper provides a broad summary of developments in the NanoSPD field since the NanoSPD5 conference in Nanjing, China.

July 10, 2014. The NanoSPD7 venue has been selected. At a meeting of the International NanoSPD Steering Committee in Metz, France, on 1 July, 2014, the location for the 7th International Conference on Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation (NanoSPD7) was selected as Sydney, Australia. The conference will take place in July 2017 with Prof. Xiaozhou Liao of the University of Sydney as Conference Chairman and Prof. Yuri Estrin as International Co-Chair. Our warmest congratulations to Profs Liao and Estrin. We are looking forward to meeting everybody and participating in an outstanding meeting in Australia in 2017.

July 10, 2014. The 6th International Conference on Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation (NanoSPD6) was held successfully in Metz, France, on June 29-July 4, 2014, under the leadership of Prof. Laszlo Toth of the Université de Lorraine. The conference was an outstanding success with a record-breaking 428 participants from 42 different countries. Each morning and afternoon session started with stand-alone Plenary talks by Irene Beyerlein (USA), Roberto Figueiredo (Brazil), Hyoung Seop Kim (Korea), Rimma Lapovok (Australia), Terry Lowe (USA), Ke Lu (China), Wolfgang Pantleon (Denmark), Reinhard Pippan (Austria), Xavier Sauvage (France), Nobuhiro Tsuji (Japan), Alexei Vinogradov (Russia) and Gerhard Wilde (Germany). These Plenary sessions were followed by four parallel sessions of contributed papers. There was also a lively poster session. A total of 172 papers was accepted for publication in the conference proceedings which will appear very soon in the IOP Conference Series (an open access journal).

July 10, 2014. The NanoSPD Achievement Award was introduced in 2008 with the objective of recognizing outstanding achievements within the field of ultrafine-grained and nanomaterials. It is planned that this award will be presented every three years at the NanoSPD International Conferences. The first award was presented to Prof. Herbert Gleiter at NanoSPD4 in Goslar, Germany, in August 2008 and the second award was presented to Prof. Terry Langdon at NanoSPD5 in Nanjing, China, in March, 2011. This year the award was given to Prof. Yuri Estrin of Monash University, Australia.

July 10, 2014. In 2014, the NanoSPD International Steering Committee decided to introduce a new award specifically to encourage research in the field of NanoSPD by young scientists. This award, known as the NanoSPD Young Researcher Award, will be given every three years at the NanoSPD International Conferences to recipients under the age of 40 years who have made outstanding contributions to NanoSPD research. For 2014 the inaugural awards were given to Prof. Roberto Figueiredo of the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and Dr. Ilchat Sabirov of IMDEA in Spain.

July 10, 2014. The NanoSPD International Steering Committee was initially formed at NanoSPD2 in Vienna, Austria, in 2002 with Ruslan Valiev (Russia) as Committee Chairman and with Yuri Estrin (Australia), Zenji Horita (Japan), Terry Langdon (USA and UK), Michael Zehetbauer (Austria) and Yuntian Zhu (USA and China) as members. Due to the exceptional interest that has developed in the processing of metals using SPD techniques, and especially the many additional laboratories that are now conducting this type of research, it was decided at NanoSPD6 in Metz to expand the committee by adding five additional members. Accordingly, the following have now joined the committee effective July 2014: Roberto Figueiredo (Brazil), Hyoung Seop Kim (Korea), Terry Lowe (USA), Laszlo Toth (France) and Gerhard Wilde (Germany).

June 30, 2014. Thomson Reuters and the ISI Web of Science has now published the listing of Highly Cited Researchers for 2014. This list is based on identifying those researchers who published the largest numbers of high impact papers in the period from 2002 to 2012 with the overall objective of identifying the top 1% of scientists world-wide. The list for the subject category of Materials Science includes two members of the NanoSPD International Steering Committee (Terry Langdon and Yuntian Zhu) as well as several materials scientists who are well known within the NanoSPD community. June 27, 2014. The Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in Harbin, China, has now introduced a new program in which a department may invite a foreign professor to give a series of lectures to undergraduate students describing new developments in their research. Prof. Terry Langdon (University of Southern California and University of Southampton) was the first foreign professor selected by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and he spent about ten days in Harbin giving lectures on various aspects of SPD processing and ultrafine-grained materials. Terry received the designation of Guest Professor at a special ceremony on June 17, 2014, and the photo shows him receiving a special plaque from Prof. Bin Guo, Vice-President of HIT.

February 24, 2014. The Eighth International Symposium on Ultrafine Grained Materials (UFG-VIII) was held in San Diego, California, as part of the TMS Annual Meeting on February 16-20, 2014. This meeting was again an outstanding success attracting a total of 158 abstracts. The symposium was organized by Suveen Mathaudhu (U.S. Army Research Office, NC), Yuri Estrin (Monash University, Australia), Zenji Horita (Kyushu University, Japan), Enrique Lavernia (University of California, Davis, CA), Xiaozhou Liao (University of Sydney, Australia), Lei Lu (IMR, Shenyang, China), Qiuming Wei (University of North Carolina-Charlotte, NC), Gerhard Wilde (University of Muenster, Germany) and Yuntian Zhu (North Carolina State University, NC). Representative papers will be subject to rigorous review and then published in a special issue of Journal of Materials Science with Prof. Yuntian Zhu as Coordinating Editor. (This special issue has now been published as Volume 49, Issue 19, October 2014).

Nov. 18, 2013. The 4th Bi-Annual International Conference on Ultrafine Grained and Nanostructured Materials (UFGNSM-2013) was held on November 5 and 6, 2013, at the University of Tehran in Tehran, Iran. As with earlier meetings in this series, the conference was conducted under the auspices of the Center of Excellence for High Performance Materials in the School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Tehran. The conference attracted a large number of participants from Iran and several foreign countries. The meeting included a number of oral presentations that were held in three parallel sessions plus an extensive series of poster presentations. The next conference in the series, UFGNSM-2015, will be held in Tehran in November 2015.

April 10, 2013. A special Symposium, with the title “Recent Developments in the Processing and Properties of Ultrafine-Grained Materials,” was held in connection with the award of the 2012 Acta Materialia Gold Medal at the Fall Meeting of the European Materials Research Society in Warsaw, Poland, on 17-21 September, 2012. The papers presented at this symposium have now been published in a single issue of Journal of Materials Science edited by Professor Yuntian Zhu (Volume 48, issue 13, July 2013).

March 30, 2013. Congratualtion to Prof. Yuri Estrin, who has been elected to the Australian Academy of Science. His citation is “Yuri Estrin is one of the world leaders in Materials Science who has advanced physically based materials modelling in an outstanding way. The models associated with his name have become classic and are broadly used for calculating mechanical behaviour of materials. Yuri’s path breaking work in model-driven development of structural nanomaterials and geometry-inspired design of novel materials has also brought him international acclaim. For his contribution to science, Yuri has received numerous international awards, including an Alexander von Humboldt Award (Germany), an honorary doctorate from the Russian Academy of Sciences and a World-Class University professorship from Korea”.

Oct. 21, 2012. The European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) Fall Meeting was held in Warsaw, Poland, on September 17-21, 2012, and it included an Acta Materialia Gold Medal Symposium entitled “Recent Developments in the Processing and Properties of Ultrafine-Grained Materials.” This symposium was very well attended and included four days of presentations plus a large poster session. On Wednesday, September 19, 2012, the 2012 Acta Materialia Gold Medal was presented to Prof. Terry Langdon of the University of Southern California and the University of Southampton in a special ceremony. April 12, 2012. Professor Yuntian Zhu has received two recent honors for his work in the field of NanoSPD. He was awarded APS Fellow at the meeting of the American Physical Society in Boston, MA, on February 28-March 2, 2012. The citation reads “For pioneering work on the fundamental understanding of deformation physics in nanocrystalline materials.” He also received the 2012 TMS Structural Materials Division Distinguished Scientist/Engineer award which was presented at the TMS Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL, on March 11-15, 2012. The citation reads “For pioneering work on the fundamental understanding of deformation twinning in, and for innovative research on improving the strength and ductility of nanostructured materials.”

March 19, 2012.The Seventh International Symposium on Ultrafine Grained Materials (UFG-VII) was held in Orlando, Florida, as part of the TMS Annual Meeting on March 11-15, 2012. The symposium was organized by Suveen Mathaudhu (U.S. Army Research Office), Xiaoxu Huang (Risø DTU, Denmark), Hyoung Seop Kim (POSTECH, Korea), Terence Langdon (University of Southern California), Terry Lowe (Manhattan Scientifics, Inc.), Ruslan Valiev (Ufa State Aviation Technical University, Russia), Xiaolei Wu (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Michael Zehetbauer (University of Vienna, Austria). The meeting was an outstanding success and, as in earlier years, attracted more abstracts than any other TMS symposium. Awards were given for best posters and best oral presentations by young scientists. For the posters, the gold medal winner was Maki Ashida (Kyushu University, Japan) and the silver medal winner was Stephanie Hunger (Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany). For the oral presentations, the gold medal winner was Philipp Frint (Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany) and the silver medal winners were Jacob Kidmose (Risø DTU, Denmark), Mert Efe (Purdue University, U.S.A.) and Christian Schmidt (Erlangen University, Germany).

Feb. 17, 2012. A paper entitled “Useful Properties of Twist Extrusion” by Beygelzimer, Varyukhin, Synkov and Orlov has been listed as a top-cited paper in Materials Science and Engineering A.

Nov. 22, 2011. Professor Ruslan Valiev was awarded the Blaise Pascal Medal in Materials Science at the General Assembly of the European Academy of Sciences held at the University of Milan, Italy, on 11 November, 2011. The award was presented in recognition of Ruslan’s “outstanding contribution to our understanding of the properties of bulk nanostructured materials.” Recognition was given also to Ruslan’s review article on SPD, published in Progress in Materials Science in 2000, which has so far received more than 2000 citations and is now “one of the most cited scientific publications in modern materials science.”

Nov. 18 , 2011. The 3rd Bi-Annual International Conference on Ultrafine Grained and Nanostructured Materials (UFGNSM-11) was held on November 2 and 3, 2011, at the University of Tehran in Tehran, Iran. The meeting was conducted under the auspices of the Center of Excellence for High Performance Materials in the School of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering at the University of Tehran. The conference attracted a large number of enthusiastic participants both from Iran and from several foreign countries. The conference included a wide range of oral presentations in two parallel sessions and many poster presentations in separate poster sessions. The next conference in this series, UFGNSM-13, is scheduled for November 5-6, 2013.

Oct. 6, 2011. Prof. Terry Langdon of the University of Southern California and the University of Southampton has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Acta Materialia Gold Medal. The award will be presented as part of the Fall Meeting of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) in Warsaw, Poland, on September 17-21, 2012. The E-MRS Fall Meeting will also include an Acta Materialia Gold Medal Symposium entitled “Recent Developments in the Processing and Properties of Ultrafine-Grained Materials.” Further details will be announced in due course on the E-MRS website.

Sept. 16, 2011. A special symposium entitled “Mechanical Properties of Nanomaterials – Experiments and Modelling” was held as part of the E-MRS Fall Meeting in Warsaw, Poland, on September 19-23, 2011. This symposium was a great success with many scientific contributions from both within and outside of Europe. The symposium organizers were Michael Zehetbauer (University of Vienna), Malgorzata Lewandowska (Warsaw University of Technology) and Gerhard Wilde (University of Munster). At a dinner held during the meeting, Michael Zehetbauer was presented with a special commemorative medal by Ruslan Valiev, Chairman of the NanoSPD International Steering Committee. The medal was presented in recognition of Michael’s success in organizing the symposium, his important scientific contributions on bulk functional nanomaterials and in celebration of his recent 60th birthday.

Sept. 16, 2011. The Third International Symposium on “Bulk Nanostructured Materials: from Science to Innovation” was held in the Congress Hall in Ufa, Russia, on August 22-26, 2011. This meeting included the Second Russian-French-German Workshop on “Atomic Transport in BNM and Related Unique Properties.” The meeting was an outstanding success attracting about 300 participants from more than 25 countries. The event took place in the framework of the Second Congress on Nanotechnologies that traditionally consists of an Exhibition of High Technologies and a series of round-tables and seminars on nanotechnologies under the auspices of the regional government, the Bashkortostan Academy of Sciences, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Ufa State Aviation Technical University together with NanoMeT Ltd. As in previous BNM symposia, a major emphasis was given to participation by young scientists with awards presented for the best oral and poster presentations. The second BNM Achievement Award was presented to Prof. Horst Hahn of Karlsruhe, Germany, for his outstanding contributions in the development of bulk nanostructured materials.

July 4, 2011. Prof. Jay Narayan is the winner of 2011 Acta Materialia Gold Medal and Prize. A special symposium is to be held to celebrate this event at the MS&T 2011 Meeting in Columbus, Ohio, USA, Oct. 16-20, 2011. This international symposium is dedicated to seminal research contributions of Professor Jagdish (Jay) Narayan (winner of 2011 Acta Materialia Gold Medal) in the field of materials science and engineering and to his leadership in materials science worldwide through professional societies and the National Science Foundation. Professor Narayan is the John C. C. Fan Family Distinguished Chair Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering at North Carolina State University. March 28, 2011. The NanoSPD Achievement Award was introduced in 2008 in order to recognize outstanding achievements within the field of nanomaterials. This award will be presented every three years at the NanoSPD International Conferences. The first award was presented to Prof. Herbert Gleiter at NanoSPD4 in Goslar, Germany, in August 2008. The second award was presented to Prof. Terry Langdon at NanoSPD5 in Nanjing, China, on March 24, 2011. The citation reads “in recognition of his pioneering role in advancing research in nanomaterials and his life-long achievements in materials science and engineering.”.

March 28, 2011. The 5th International Conference on Nanomaterials by Severe Plastic Deformation (NanoSPD5) was held on the campus of Nanjing University of Science and Technology in Nanjing, China, on March 21-25, 2011. The conference was an outstanding success with about 300 participants from 29 different countries. The conference proceedings are already available in Materials Science Forum, vol. 667-669 (2011). December 3, 2010. An International Symposium on Giant Straining Process for Advanced Materials (GSAM2010) was held at Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, on November 19-22, 2010. The symposium was organized by Prof. Zenji Horita of Kyushu University and the primary focus was on the production of multifunctional materials using severe plastic deformation. The symposium included an introductory lecture by Prof. Nobuhiro Tsuji of Kyoto University on the new Japanese national project on “Bulk Nanostructured Metals.”

December 1, 2010. Prof. Ruslan Z. Valiev, Chairman of the International NanoSPD Steering Committee, has been selected to receive the first MSEA Prize. This award was introduced this year by Elsevier to recognize outstanding scientific achievements in authors publishing in their journal Materials Science and Engineering A. Ruslan was selected to receive the award because of his many important contributions in the field of NanoSPD. The award was announced this week during the MRS Fall Meeting in Boston, MA, and the formal presentation will be made at the TMS Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA, in February 2011.

March 4 , 2010. The Sixth International Symposium on Ultrafine Grained Materials (UFG-VI) was held in Seattle, WA, as part of the TMS Annual Meeting on February 15-17, 2010. The meeting was an outstanding success with a total of 175 abstracts received (an all-time record for a TMS symposium). March 4 , 2010. Prof. Yuntian Zhu, a member of the International NanoSPD Steering Committee, received a special honor at the TMS Annual Meeting in Seattle on February 16, 2010. Yuntian received the Materials Processing and Manufacturing Division Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award for 2010 where this award is given to an individual who has made a long lasting contribution to the design, synthesis, processing, and performance of engineering materials with significant industrial applications. The citation for the award recognized Yuntian “for his significant contributions to the deformation physics and ductility of nanocrystalline and ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials as well as nanotechnologies developed by his group for producing such materials. Jan. 5 , 2010. The review article “Principles of Equal-Channel Angular Pressing as a Processing Tool for Grain Refinement” by Ruslan Z. Valiev and Terence G. Langdon was published in Progress in Materials Science in 2006 (Vol. 51, pages 881-981). This paper is now receiving more than 150 citations each year and it is the most cited paper to appear in the journal in 2006. Based on this record, ISI/Thomson Reuters conducted an interview with Prof. Terry Langdon and the interview was added as a podcast to the Science Watch website in January 2010.
