FAQs
Many general questions are answered in this guide to transcribing herbarium specimens.
Below is information specific to these OSU Herbarium specimens:
- Please transcribe all text and abbreviations exactly as written. The only exception is obvious spelling errors – but if you are at all uncertain, leave it as is.
- Labels often have extra information that does not need to be entered into Notes from Nature. Examples include: common names, label headers (e.g. Flora of Oregon), and information about the plant that does not fit “habitat” or “plant description.”
- If you see a habitat like “ponderosa pine forest”, please enter the plant name in the habitat and check that there are associated species. See this explanation for more info.
- Why is the OSU Herbarium part of the Consortium of California Herbaria? The California Floristic Province is a global biodiversity hotspot that extends into southwestern Oregon. Plants don’t respect state boundaries, and it is valuable to have these specimens in a combined database to accurately map and analyze species distributions. These data will also contribute to a better understanding of the northern limits of the California Floristic Province.
