How I made a tough decision

I didn’t expect to encounter a very troubling dilemma in my first week of school, which was the choice of the capstone project. Capstone, the most important project I’ve ever been involved in at university, was something I had concerns and anxieties about in my mind early on, which made it even harder to make a decision that could affect my future career in a short period of time. I spent a long time staring at a bunch of projects, each of which I found very interesting, but I didn’t know how to make a choice, and I ended up stipulating a few factors to help me make my choice.

The first factor was the area I wanted to explore, for example, I wanted to explore more deeply in the direction of web development, so I chose more web development-related projects. At the same time, I also combined my business minor and chose some projects that could combine my business knowledge. Besides that, I am excited about the arrival of Industry 4.0 and Web 3.0, and see this as an emerging field that many of us software engineers will be involved in in the future, so I also chose some MR and blockchain-related projects.

The second factor is the difficulty of the project as well as the scope. After I browsed through all the projects, I thought there were some interesting projects inside the list, but they were so far from my current knowledge that it forced me to abandon some projects that I didn’t think I could master through hard work. However, capstone was a great opportunity for me to improve my knowledge and I didn’t want to waste this valuable learning opportunity, so I chose projects that were challenging for me but not too difficult. I believe that what is most suitable for me is always the most helpful for me.

The third factor is my gut feeling. This may sound unreliable, but it’s very helpful to me. For example, I was torn between my first choice and my second choice, and I was both interested in developing the rental marketplace, but at the same time was attracted to a new polling project, and finally, I decided to listen to my innermost voice because I believe passion is also an important factor in persistence.

After a week of wrestling and pondering, I have truly taken the first step to capstone. I hope that over the next three semesters, I can work with my teammates to successfully complete the capstone project and gain valuable experience for our future careers.
