The 2022 IPM Research and Extension Summit, which provides Oregon State University professionals working in integrated pest management opportunities for discussion and development, was held by the Oregon IPM Center at OSU’s Corvallis campus in March.
The Oregon IPM Center, which is part of the College of Agricultural Sciences, aims to achieve economically sustainable pest management while reducing risks to human health and the environment. IPM encourages an environmentally sensitive approach to pest management in both agricultural and non-agricultural settings.
The summit included a campus walking tour, where Trades Maintenance Coordinator Todd Cross was a featured speaker. Cross is a member of the Landscape Shop with OSU Facilities Services.
He spoke with summit participants about the various types of work done by the Landscape Shop to care for the turf, trees, and plants across the Corvallis campus in a way that aligns with IPM best practices.
“As a public institution and an open place for people to visit, we welcome questions about the work we do,” Cross said. “The intersection of agriculture and landscaping does happen on our campus.”
An example of the IPM work done by the OSU Landscape Shop is how they conduct routine pressure washing for moss removal on campus, which results in fewer chemical applications, and avoids the use of moss killers as much as possible.
“The summit provided a great opportunity to network with our colleagues working in IPM in Oregon,” Cross said.
